Page 6 text:

The Official Seal The official seal of The University of Southwestern Louisiana was born of a desire by Southwestern ' s first president, Dr. Edwin L. Stephens, to commemorate, in a manner that would become part of Southwestern ' s treasured traditions, the accreditation of Southwestern as a four-year college. A heraldic seal seemed fitting for this purpose and was adopted May 11, 1926, following Southwestern ' s establishment as a four-year college and her admittance into the Southern Association of Colleges and Second- ary Schools and the American Association of Colleges. Conceived and designed chiefly by Dr. Stephens, the seal was perfected through the cooperation of Professor Ellsworth Woodward, then director of the Newcomb College Art School, and Professor John AA. AAcBryde of Tulane. The shield of the seal is indicative of faith and valor. To establish the image of the dominance of Louisiana there is in the upper part of the shield a pelican in her piety, red on a silver field. Portions of the arms of France and Spain are quartered on the shield to indicate the former con- trol by these two countries of the area in which Southwestern is located. Symbolic of France, the first and fourth quarters have three silver fleurs-de- lis on a blue field. In the second and third quarters appear the old arms of Castille, a gold tower on a red field, symbolizing Spain. Within a circle there is a wreath of live oaks, beloved by Dr. Stephens, draped about the shield. The circle is representative of the circular drive in front of Martin Hall. The motto of the three Latin adverbs is Bravely, Happily, Faithfully. An outer circle bears the official name of South- western and the date of the act creating it.
