College of Education In 1911, the Institution established a regular school of nine grades with observation, practice, and directed teacher training. Within a few years, the curriculunn be- came a standard two-year program. After 1939, all teacher education programs were de- gree programs. In 1939, a laboratory school, later named F. AA. Hamilton Laboratory School in honor of the man who served as dean of the College of Education at the time the school was established, was built on campus. The purpose of the College of Education is to educate teachers for the elementary and secondary public schools of Louisiana and to render professional and auxiliary services to the schools of Louisiana.
