College of Liberal Arts In the early history of Southwestern, the College of Liberal Arts made up almost the entire institution. In the period between 1922 and 1953 various departments were removed and expanded to form the other five col- leges of the University. The College now includes the de- partments of Air Science, Art, Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Social Studies, and Speech. In recent years growth has been very rapid. The num- ber of students majoring in the college has shown an in- crease from 802 in the fall of 1957 to 1,769 in the fall of 1963. There has also been an impressive increase in the number who, after graduation, go into graduate and professional schools or other forms of advanced, special- ized study. Dean Vernon L.
