E.-ff-qu-e-J ..s, it I --ni., DEDICATION It is a proud position in which any man stands when he can look in retrospect upon a long succession of years given to the service of others. ln his youth, as he begins his chosen work, he thinks little of the ultimate breadth of his influence. Unrealized by him, however, that influence expands in ever-widening circles as he sets himself to every task comprehended within his sphere of duty. The sound purposes of those who have gone before him he sees, in his growing wisdom, as worthy of continuance. He does not tear down, he builds. In such a position can Joel Lafayette Fletcher stand. As a youthful teacher he associated himself with an equally youthful institution and advanced with it for two decades after which he became its chief administrator. And now, for twenty-one years as president of a full-grown academic foundation, he can look hack upon loyal and uninterrupted service to the State of Louisiana and more particularly to his adopted region of the State. But the fulfillment of his aims, the concrete and the intangible fruit of his work would be to him today less personally satisfying were it not for the encouraging com- panionship, the ideals congenial with his own which his gracious wife, Frances lVlcLees Fletcher, has constantly supplied not only to him, but to his whole academic family. L'ACADlEN is happy to offer this edition of 1963 to President and Mrs. Fletcher as an expression of the warm esteem in which they are held by the University of Southwestern Louisiana and as an assurance that as long as memory lives, they too shall live.
