... a tribute . . . We first meet Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher at the Freshman Reception, when carefully dressed and scared to death, we wind our way through the awesome receiving line on the patio at the President ' s Home. We might be surprised at how human they are— not a bit as we had expected. Occasionally a student in DeClouet Hall can look out her window at the President ' s garden, and get a glimpse of Mr. Fletcher pacing up and down the walk jogging a cry- ing grandchild in his arms. And during the holidays, the house is overflowing with Fletchers— three daughters, grandchildren, and Naval Ensign Joel III, home on leave. Except at graduation exercises, no one sees Mr. Fletcher in formal academic dress. Somehow, the austerity of his black robes, re- lieved only with a few touches of color, make him seem almost a different man from the one we have come to know on the campus. And then, as he passes down the aisle in the academic procession, marching grimly erect, the set of his mouth softens into a smile, and the glint in his eye becomes a twinkle, and we know it ' s the same Mr. Fletcher.
