Pacadien Southwestern Louisiana Institute Lafayette, Louisiana Pacadien 1958 southwestern louisiana institute lafayette, louisiana ... a tribute . . . We first meet Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher at the Freshman Reception, when carefully dressed and scared to death, we wind our way through the awesome receiving line on the patio at the President ' s Home. We might be surprised at how human they are— not a bit as we had expected. Occasionally a student in DeClouet Hall can look out her window at the President ' s garden, and get a glimpse of Mr. Fletcher pacing up and down the walk jogging a cry- ing grandchild in his arms. And during the holidays, the house is overflowing with Fletchers— three daughters, grandchildren, and Naval Ensign Joel III, home on leave. Except at graduation exercises, no one sees Mr. Fletcher in formal academic dress. Somehow, the austerity of his black robes, re- lieved only with a few touches of color, make him seem almost a different man from the one we have come to know on the campus. And then, as he passes down the aisle in the academic procession, marching grimly erect, the set of his mouth softens into a smile, and the glint in his eye becomes a twinkle, and we know it ' s the same Mr. Fletcher. message from the president . JOK1.L.FI.ETCHER. The boundaries of the Quadrangle are no longer separated by a vast no-man ' s-land from the frontiers of Little Abbeville. For mushrooming in the field that once echoed the cadence count of the R.O.T.C. are two more up-to-the-minute buildings for the scientific and technological departments— the Engineering Building and the Biological Sciences Building. OLD SPOTS A sundial stands in the shade of the oak tree which commenn- orates the first South western war casualty . . . The quiet beauty of Cypress Lake now reflects modern buildings as well as mossy old trees and iris beds . . . Evenly spaced oak trees are testimony of the foresight of a great man . . . Changes mark our college ' s progress — but the old spots, fifty years unchanged, make its memories. ilk THE DEANS Patiently enduring the chaos of registration week, smiling at innumerable ban- quets, mediating the strug- gles of students and faculty and u nforeseen circum- stances, the deans are the cogs that keep the wheels of Southwestern turning. 16 V COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS The cacophony of music is- suing from Burke Hall, Bon Jour, monsieur, mingling with I run, you run, he runs, the muted bubbling of an ex- periment in the Chemistry Building. A pass interference called against Sam Houston in the opening period put the ball on their 15 yard line. On the first play Frank Foreman sliced over for the score and Ralph Davis converted to make the score 7-0. The Bearcats of Sam Houston tied the score in the second period on a 31 yard pass play. The two teams battled to a scoreless third period and then SLI came up with a touchdown early in the final quarter. It came after a sustained drive which ended with Steve Gossen crash- ing over from the one yard line. RALPH GILL KENNETH SPENCER GERALD KAPP Center Tackle End LINDEN BERCEJEAY FRANK FOREMAN RALPH DAVIS Guard Fullback Halfback THE SOUTHEASTERN GAME Bulldogs gained 7-7 tie with Southeastern in last quarter rally. The first half was highlighted by strong de- fensive play by both sides and by two SLI drives sparked by Mickey Benham both of which fell short of the goal. Beginning the second half the Lions moved down the field to post a 7-0 lead. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs stopped a Lion drive on the one yard line and after an exchange of downs Richard Coffey stole the ball on a faulty snap from center. With new found spirit SLI moved down the field on a pass play from Gossen to Arnea to the 10 yard line and scored with three and one half minutes remaining to play. THE LAMAR TECH GAME A determined Lamar Tech team scores close 36-20 victory over SLI. The Lamar Tech Cardinals shov ing a v ell balanced offense won a second half victory over the Bulldogs of Lafayette. The twenty points posted by the SLI team proved to be not quite enough as the Cardinals scored thirty six points on a strong running game and an accurate passing attack. PHIL ARENA PAUL GUIDRY RICHARD COFFEY End Halfback End THE NORTHEAST STATE GAME Some 500 students journey to Monroe on Annual Excursion to see Southwestern edge Northeastern 6-0. The defensive pattern was set early in the game when SLI stopped a Northeastern scoring drive by recovering a fumble in the end zone. With less than a minute left to play in the half, Joe Calloway faked a running play to the right side and sent Ralph Davis down the left sideline and after eluding two defenders caught Calloway ' s pass for a touchdown. This 6-0 lead proved to be all SLI needed, as an alert and strong defense aided by the fine kicking of Ralph Davis held this margin throughout the game. THE LOUISIANA TECH GAME Louisiana Tech hands SLI 28-13 setback. The Bulldogs of Ruston overpowered the SLI team and went on to post a decisive but well earned victory, for the Bulldogs of SLI were in the thick of the battle all the way. Ralph Davis, SLI halfback, was voted outstanding GSC player of the week for his performance in this game. FREDDIE MAIER MICKEY BENHAM WALTERS JANOE Tackle Halfback Tackle THE SOUTHERN STATE GAME SLI humbles Southern State of Arkansas 25-6. After a slow start the Bulldogs roared back to post its largest scoring outburst of the season. SLI held a slim halftime lead, but in the second half a superior line and hard run- ning backs, proved to be too much for the Bulldogs ' worthy opponents from Magnolia, Arkansas. THE TRINITY UNIVERSITY GAME Trinity ' s second half aerial attack buries Bulldogs 27-7. SLI scored first and enjoyed a 7-6 halftime lead. This prosperity was short lived however as the Trinity Tigers went ahead on a safety early in the second half. Trinity then filled the air with passes completing two of them for touchdowns and scoring a third on a relentless drive in the closing minutes. BENARD LYNN CONCIENNE RONNIE ROBERTS Tackle Halfback Fullback THE LOUISIANA COLLEGE GAME A strong defense highlights SLI victory over Louisiana College 6-0. The Bulldogs scored six points and held off a rugged Louisiana College eleven for a narrow and well earned victory. Strong and alert defensive play stopped numerous Wildcat drives into Bulldog territory. SLI would muster an offense drive only to be stopped short of paydirt by the stubborn Wildcats. THE NORTHWESTERN GAME Homecoming Game we were up, but Northwestern was stubborn, Northwestern 19, SLI 0. After a scoreless first quarter and midway into the second quarter a Dale Hoffpauir to Billy Booth pass garnered Northwestern six points. Shortly afterward another of Hoffpauir ' s long passes, this time to Charles Hennigan brought the ball to the SLI five yard line, and a few plays later the score was 13-0. Two pass plays coupled with an end sweep in the fourth quarter ended the Northwestern scoring for the day. South western ' s offense would begin to move only to bog down in Northwestern territory, throughout the day. 278 FLETCHER HUDSON Tackle DARYL PATIN Guard CHARLIE WOOD Fullback THE McNEESE STATE GAME AAcNeese edges SLl 13-0 in the MUD. The Bulldogs were prepared for a closing season victory, but the Cow- boys of AAcNeese had thoughts of a share in the conference championship and with a relentless ground attack overcame a strong SLl defense to capture a 13-0 victory. We especially wish to extend our thanks to the following for having helped us prepare this yearbook. Dean Agnes Roth, our faculty advisor, who was always ready to give advice and that extra push; Mr. John Stephan, our photographer, whose wonderful pictures appear in this book; Mr. Fred Elsing, Mr. Tom Murray, and Mr. Koger of Taylor Publishing Company, who have helped us plan and prepare the material, for without them there could be no yearbook. As editors of this book for the past year we have thoroughly enjoyed com- piling and editing the activities of S.L.I, in 1957-58. We hope that in the future years when you pick up this dusty old year- book and turn the pages of the past you will find memories and inspiration.
