RN LOUISIANA INSTITUTE LACAD E V- 956 SOUTHWESTERN LOU SI ANA INSTITUTE, LAFAYETTE, LOU S ANA HARRY DE LA RUE Professor and Head of the Department of Social Studies dedication — The term patron, in spite of the connotations of dubious respect which )ave clustered about it in modern times, had a noble beginning. It originated in the Latin word pater and first signified in English one who takes a fatherly interest in a person, practice or institution ' Since 1926 L ' Acadien has had a steadfast patron in this noble, original sense of the word in the person of Professor Harry De La Rue; nd it is to him that this 1956 edition of L ' Acadien is most respectfully dedicated. Growth and expansion on the Southwestern campus have left only moss-laden cypress trees as a reminder of picturesque Cypress Lake. We hope this photograph of the lake serves as an additional reminder of its beauty and serenity, just as we hope this year ' s L ' Acadien serves to remind you of campus personalities, events and activities that have had special meaning for you in the year 1956. 8 CYPRESS LAKE JOEL LAFAYETTE FLETCHER President 16 1. In signing off, I find it interest- ing to note that among all the things an editor has to remember and there are many— good and bad— only the good things keep coming back to me right now. Most of the good things I remember involve people such as Pro- fessor Harry DeLaRue, a true advisor in every sense of the word; my willing and capable staff, willing even after 1 in the morning; Mr. John Stephan, the photographer who never failed to come up with a solution to all my picture problems; Mr. Fred Elsing and Mr. Tom Murray of Taylor Publishing Company, the two men with all the answers to my yearbook worries, and all the other people who helped in the countless little ways that make a dif- ference. Their cooperation and assistance have made the job that is done a pleasant one and for this I am most grateful.
