IOEL LAFAYETTE FLETCHER, B.S., M.S.. D.SC.. LL.Di. President, Southwestern Louisiana Institute Ioel Lafayette Fletcher, lr., entered the employ of Southwest- ern Louisiana Institute as an Assistant Professor of Agriculture on August 16, 1920. He is a native of Grant Parish, but lived most of his early years in Ruston where he attended public school and was graduated from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. In 1918 he finished Louisiana State Univer- sity with a B.S. Degree and he re- ceived the Master of Science De- gree from Iowa State College, Ames, in 1926. Mr. Fletcher had been on the faculty of Southwestern for near- ly twenty-one years when on lanuary l, 1941, he became presi- dent of that institution. He has been active in civic af- fairs, having served as President of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, President of the La- fayette Rotary Club: is now a member of the Lafayette Library Board, the- State Library Board, the Gtovernor's Advisory Commit- tee on Employment Security, the Governor's Highway Safety Com- mission, and a member of the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. I-le has served as District Governor of Rotary International for his Rotary District. President Joel Fletcher Mr. Fletcher received the Lafayette Civic Cup in 1938 and in 1944 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by Southwestern Presbyterian University of Memphis and the Doctor of Laws De- gree by Marquette University of Mil- waukee, Wisconsin. The Ministry of Education of France has awarded him the Medal Reconnaissance Francaise for his interest in French stu- dents and in 1947 he was made a Cheva- lier of the Legion of Honor of France.
