S. A. F. R. O. T. C. The Air Force Reserve Of- ficers Training Corps unit was established at South- western in 1948. The staff at that time was composed of four officers and four airmen. The enrollment for the first year was approximately four hundred. Since activation the corps has grown to num- ber approximately one thou- sand, and the staff has dou- bled in size. Approval has been given for conversion to the Air Force blue uniform. JAMES A. COWAN Colonel, United States Air Force Professor of Air Science and Tactics Colonel Cowan was assigned to Southwestern in August, 1950, as a replacement for Major Richard T. W. Rivers, the first Professor of Air Science and Tactics assigned upon acti- vation of the unit in 1948. Colonel Cowan was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1930 upon completion of his ROTC training. He was transferred to the U. S. Air Force in 1942 and assigned to the European theater of operat ions. He was i wounded in Sicily and hospitalized for almost a year. Upon his release from the hospital, he was assigned to the Office of Air Inspector, U. S. Air Force Headquarters, where he re- mained until 1948. Because of his prior training and experi- ence, he was sent to the U. S. [ One Hundred Forty-six ] LA lOuSK H ij, te, LoM.v;, THE 195 ' 1 . t Raymond Didier, former SLI football coach and baseball star, started his first season as head foot- ball coach at Southwestern this year. He will con- tinue as baseball coach for his fourth straight year. Didier came to SLI from Catholic high of Baton Rouge and set a brilliant record as a football and baseball player before and after the war. He v as named to the All-Louisiana Intercollegiate confer- ence football team in 1946. After a year ' s service as Athletic Director and Head Coach at St. Peter ' s college in New Iberia, Didier returned to SLI in the spring of 1948. Since that time he has been end coach and head baseball mentor. Raymond Didier, Head Coach [ One Hundred Fifty ] FOOTBALL SEASON Southwestern 7 Northeastern 13 Coach Raymond Didier, who took over the reins of the Bulldog Squad only this year, saw his team lose a close and hotly contested game to the highly-rated Northeastern State by a 13 to 7 score. This non- conference contest officially ushered in the 1951 football season and gave the home fans high hopes for a berth in the G. S. C. crown race. F. G. (Boogie) Mixon Mike Simmons Lavelle Kirkpatrick Jimmy Dean [ One Hundred Fifty-two ] Southwestern 35 McNeese 14 The Canines took their first trip of the season to Lake Charles, La., where they encountered the McNeese State College Cow-Pokes. The Bulldogs chewed out a 35 to 14 victory over the scrappy newcomers. The tossing of Jack Herron, combined with the glue fingers of John Falgout and Chester Gaudin, netted two touchdowns and was one of the deciding factors of the ball game. Edward Clemmons Charles Gaudin Clay Hudson Louis Roth [ One Hundred Fifty three ] Toe Kite Jimmy Dent Gerald Foret David Moore Southwestern 0 Southeastern 14 In their first G. S. C. contest, the S. L. I. Bulldogs tangled with the Southeastern Lions in Hammond. With the support of over 400 loyal S. L. I. students, Red Jackets, and band members, the South- western squad played a heads-up ball game, only to get shut out by the Lions 14 to 0. Ken Sweeney and Boogie Mixon gained im- pressive yardage in the rushing department, which helped S. L. I. in gaining 25 first downs. Southwestern 44 Troy 7 On the road for the third straight week, the S. L. I. Bulldogs cleaned house when they met the Alabama State Teachers in Troy, Ala. The Didier-men had a field day and ran up a 44-7 score. Jack Baker and F. G. Mixon were top ground gainers, with Jack Herron and Allen Meyers taking aerial honors. In the line, Roy Henckle and Willard Smith, both freshman guards, were stellar performers who played a hard, consistent game. 2% Doyle Boudreaux Charles Garber Kenneth Sweeney Hubert Blanchard [ One Hundred Fifty-five ] Allen Meyers Al McGovern Jack Baker Billy Higginbotham Southwestern 0 Mississippi Southern 41 The Southwestern Bulldogs played host to the strong Southern squad. This was Southwestern ' s third loss of the season, the score being 41 to 0. Scrappy Hart ' s punting and Bucky McElroy ' s running was too much for the ' dogs to cope with. Our own Ken Sweeney did a good job with his fancy booting, netting 621 yards in 16 tries, for an average of 38.8 yards per try. In the line, Bob Dodson, left tackle, and Larry Wiedeman, center, played a bang-up game, giving the Southerners plenty of trouble. Southwestern 7 Memphis State College 41 The Red and White of S. L. I. met the big and rugged Memphis squad in McNaspy Stadium and fell in defeat for the second straight week. The single-wing formation of the visitors, plus the performance of fullback Messer, routed the Bulldogs 41 to 7. This non-conference game was the fourth loss of the season. Nevertheless, the performance of Bill Lowry, who is the ace line backer and all around man, and Fred Liebert, tackle, and stalwart of the left side of the line, proved to be two big assets of the Bulldogs ' cause. John Falgout Fred Liebert Jack Herron Al Tauzier [ One Hundred Fifty-seven ] Southwestern 32 Stephen F. Austin 14 The up-again, down-again Canines came through with an im- pressive 32 to 14 win over their old Texas rivals, who have yet to come out on top in their eleven previous meets. Their top passer, Torok, was kept well bottled throughout the fray, and it was a Red and White game all the way. F. G. Boogie Mixon scampered all over the host, gaining nearly 200 yards, and Little AU-American Candidate Jack Herron kept the air filled with his hard, accurate aerials. Mike Milano Jimmy Kennison Vic Vegas Benny Heidenreich [ One Hundred Fifty-eight ] Southwestern 34 Louisiana Tech 7 The Southwestern gridders hit the road again this week and waded into their arch rivals, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Still pepped up over the previous game, the Big Red rolled all over the defenders to the tune of 34 to 7. The line play of Lavelle Kirkpafrick, Al Tauzier, and Rafort LeBlanc was too much for the Tech machine. With two game.s yet to play, and with such consistent passing and running of men like Herron, Boudreau, Mixon and McGovern, the ' dogs had already compiled over 2700 yards. Roy Domengeaux W. Earles Roy Henckel Joe Price [ One Hundred Fifty-nine ] Southwestern 27 Louisiana College 21 In a close, thrilling game, the S. L. I. Bulldogs nosed out the Louisiana College Wildcats by a score of 27 to 21. The defensive line, held up by Dave Moore, Louie Touchet, and Ben Raymond, kept the pressure off the Bulldogs, and bogged down the Wildcat offense. It was a battle of the T formation, with a lot of aerial work and hard running by both clubs. A last chance pass put the game on ice for S. L. I., who had refused to quit. Other standout linemen were Joe Price and Mike Simmons. Ben Raymond Willard Smith Sam Siragusa Herbert Daly Bob Dodson [ One Hundred Sixty ] Bill Lowry Rayford LeBlanc Larry Weidemann Calvin Trahan Lovis Touchet SOUTHWESTERN 41 NORTHWESTERN 26 The homecoming tilt between the Bulldogs and the Demons was a touch-and-go affair at the start, but the depth of the S. L. I. squad soon showed, and when the final gun sounded, Didier ' s men had a decisive 41 to 26 win nailed down. This brought the season to a close with 6 wins against 4 losses. It was the last game for fifteen men of the Red and White squad, and their performance was one that will long be remem- bered by Coaches Didier, Peavey, and McClelland, who garnered a third place in the G. S. C. conference with this win. BASKETBALL The oldest member of the Southwestern coaching staff from the point of service is J. C. Reinhardt. He will start his twenty-first year as head basketball coach and trainer this year. Reinhardt came to SLl in 1931 after a brilliant basketball career at the University of Iowa. As a player he earned Ail-American honors. Reinhardt has produced powerful basket- ball teams at SLI and has frequently directed his teams to wins over major college quintets. His abilities as an athletic trainer have been recognized by all SLI head coaches dur- ing the past 21 years. The excellent physical condition of SLI athletes is largely the result of Dutch ' s years of training and experience and his keen personal interest in the welfare of his boys. J. C.
