With such losses as Dave Fisher, Dick Pate, and Jerry Hodges in the backfield and Paul DiGiovanni and A. D. Smith in the line, there was a big building job to be done in a short time around such letter- men as Crowson, Boudreaux, Gaudet and Wink. Coach Swanson depended upon junior college transfers and up and coming freshmen. By the beginning of the season he, with his able assistants, had rounded out a team far above par according to all previous predictions. COACH A. I. RED SWANSON Head Football Coach 1950 FOOTBALL SQUAD. rr ON THE RIGHT FOOT Too many homecomings. That is the best way to describe the 1950 football sea- son, as SLI won its five home games and lost four games on the road — all of them homecomings for the opponents. The sweetest victory of all was the homecom- ing game against Louisiana Tech, in which SLI won its first game over the Techmen since 1946. The pressure on SLI in every road game, coupled with mid-season injuries to the defensive line, found the Bulldogs hanging on in the end. RAY BOUDREAUX Tackle 1945, ' 48, ' 49. BAPTIST— SOUTHWESTERN— 25 Coach Red Swanson pulled the wraps off an explosive SLI Bulldog squad as they romped to a 25-0 victory over East Texas Baptist College in the opener. Playing straight, methodical ball, the Bulldogs ground out their victory in easy fashion. The Bulldogs began the scoring in the first quarter when Jack Herron intercepted a pass on his own 21 -yard line and ran all the way for a TD. The second SLI tally came as a result of superb punting by Kenneth Sweeney and fine punt-returning by Mike Simmons. Lewis threw a 20-yard pass to Crowson for the tally. A blocked punt by Lovic Touchet and Hutch Henry set up the third touchdovm in the third stanza. Crowson ripped off right tackle from two yards out for the touch- down. SLI picked up its last touchdovm in the final frame on a 53-yard run by F. G. Mixon and a fake pass and run by Lewis. The only score of the night came on a 30-yard aerial from Lewis to Gaudet. Gaudet made a bril- liant catch on the three-yard line and stepped over for the score. SOUTHEASTERN— Due mainly to the work of two defensive backs, Jack Herron and Bill Lowry, that the Lions were held to only 87 yards on the ground. Other outstanding players in the defensive battle were SLI linemen John Falgout, Hutch Henry, Ray Boudreaux and C. L. Wink. READY AND WAITING. KEN SWEENEY OFF RIGHT TACKLE. Lewis Night at the annual gridiron meeting between SLI and Troy, Alabama, State Teachers college in McNaspy stadium. The slim senior quarterback tossed four touch- down passes and engineered SLI to a 40-14 win over the visitors. SLI ' s recovery of a fumble on the Troy 16 set up the first touchdown, which was scored on a pass from Lewis to Goudet. Troy sandwiched two touchdowns and two extra TROY STATE— 14 points between a 27-yard scoring pass from Lewis to Crowson to take a 14-13 lead and put the Bulldogs behind in a ball game for the first time during the season. A Lewis-to-Falgout pass set the stage for Mixon ' s scoring line plunge two minutes before the half ended to give SLI a 20-14 lead. Junior halfback Jack Baker sparked a 64-yard SLI scoring drive, and Lewis flipped to Falgout and Gcfudet for two more tallies in the Bulldog romp. BAKER GOES FOR 30. PLOWING THROUGH. SOUTH— 6 Homecoming headaches for Swanson and the Bulldogs began at Hattiesburg, where the Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought decision to a homecoming-inspired Southern squad, 6-0. The Southerners scored the only touch- down of the game in the second quarter on brilliant quarterback sneaks by Dave Walker. Southwestern ' s big defensive line stalled the highly-touted Southern attack throughout the fray, and twice stopped Southern threats inside the SLl 10 in the fourth quarter. Sweeney played an outstanding offensive and defensive game for the Bulldogs, and his punting kept the Southerners at bay dur- ing most of the night. The score of the game did not reflect upon the strength of the respective teams, as it was undoubtedly one of the best-played and most thrill-packed games in the 1950 GSC race. SOUTHWESTERN— MEMPHIS ST.— 20 Old Man Mud and the weariness of a journey of over 400 miles cost the Bulldogs their second defeat of the season. Memphis State ' s powerful single wing at- tack, aided by the mud, ground out a 20-0 victory over the Bulldogs. The sea of mud that served as a playing field and continu- ous rain throughout the contest ruined the effectiveness of SLI ' s T formation. SLI ' s great defensive line gave a credit- able performance in holding down the Mem- phis State aggregation, a 30-point favorite, to three touchdowns. The only SLI scoring threat came in the third quarter when substitute fullback Gerry Foret ran 68-yards on a touchdown play that was nullified by an offsides penalty. Two consistent performers, Mike Simmons and Joe Kite, turned in top performances in the SLI defensive backfield. F. G. MIXON L.H.B. 1949. SOUTHWESTERN— 41 LOUISIANA TECH— 13 Probably the sweetest revenge any SLI athletic team ever gained was obtained by the 1950 football team in their first win over arch-rival Louisiana Tech since 1946. While 11,500 hysterical homecoming fans cheered wildly, the Bulldog eleven pulled the conference ' s upset of the year by crush- ing the heavily-favored Techmen, 41-13. The running of George Crowson, ace SLI halfback, and the stellar linebacking of Andy Billich, freshm.an center, featured the SLI win. Billich started the Bulldogs off to their first touchdown by re- covering a Tech fumble deep in the visitors ' territory. Crowson plunged over from four yards out for the first tally. The Crowson touchdown started SLI off on a scoring parade that saw Baker, Mixon, Gaudet and Foret cross the Tech goal line. Mixon scored twice, and Gaudet caught a pass from Lewis for his touchdown. Tech, led by Joe Rabb and Jimmy Harrison, scored one touch- down in the second quarter and one touchdown in the final frame. GOT A BIG BIRTHDAY PRESENT E. I. LEWIS Q.B. 1949. Lewis climaxed a brilliant comeback by SLI when he plunged over for a touchdown Vvrith one second to go to give the Bulldogs a 20-13 win. SLI trailed 13-0 at half time, but waged a hard- fought uphill battle to down the powerful Texas 1 1 . Crowson set up the first two touchdowns on runs of more than 40 yards, and Lewis scored both tallies on quarterback sneaks. The Basketball Team had excep- tionally rough going on the road but made up for it on home appearances. Coach Reinhardt had to depend upon six seasoned veterans during the entire season. Though S. L. F The third year of operation of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps at Southwestern saw an all time high enroll- ment in the Air Science courses of four hun- dred and fourteen cadets the first semester and four hundred and sixty-three for the sec- ond semester. This easily established the Southwestern unit as the second largest Air Force ROTC in the State of Louisiana. Seventy-six cadets have received their com- missions since the unit began operations. Many are already serving at bases in the United States and two are overseas. With these men and the many more that will enter the Air Force as soon as they receive their commissions SLI is doing a large part in the training of men for the defense of this country. The Basic ROTC includes courses in navigation, meteorology, air operations, map reading, first aid, history of the Air Force, etc. The Advanced ROTC gives the cadet a chance to major in one of the two special courses of instruc- tion: Administration and Logistics or Armament. Upon entry into active duty with the Air Force the officer will usually work in the field in which he studied at SLI, however, he does have every oppor- tunity, if physically qualified, to go to pilot or navi- gator school as a Second Lieutenant.
