SOUTHWESTMI Southwestern was established in 1898, and its first session began on September 18, 1901. The establishment was brought about by State Senator Robert Martin, and the first land was donated by Mr. Crow Girard and his mother. The first buildings erected were Foster Hall, Martin Hall and a few shop buildings. The primary purpose in founding the Insti- tute was to provide the stimulus for state assistance to the development of education in the south and southwestern sections of Louisiana. In 1915 the College of Education was desic noted by the State Department of Educatiq . This was followed by the College of Liberal Arts. The main campus of the Institute consists 132 acres, most of which are in the limits of Lafayette. South of the campus is the Whit- •tington Farm of 525 acres, and the Dairy Farm of 125 acres. Since the erection of the original buildings, appropriations have been made by the legis- lature for the erection of the president ' s home
