It is with hope that the book is presented to Southwestern, hope that the 1947 L ' Acadien will some day recall to memory the pleasant days we spent here. Scene from Cuckoos on the Hearth ' Scene from Skidding ' A number of Southwestern ' s students evidenced interest in acting, directing, and various phases of technical pro- duction: lighting, costuming, property management, and makeup. To afford practical opportunities to these stu- dents and at the same time to entertain campus theatre-goers, the Drama Guild presented two plays during the school year. The first of these was Aurania Rouverol ' s sentimental com- edy of American life, Skidding, the family story of the perennial Hardys. This show was pre- sented for three nights during the last week of October with a cast which included Clyde Shaw, Allen Cassidy, Scran- ton Mouton, Elaine Smith, Mantha Caraway, Pat Mc- Quaig, and Roy Rhodes in im- portant roles. The second semester play, Cuckoos on the Hearth, was scheduled for the first week in March. This satire on mystery plays featured Roy Rhodes, Scranton Mouton, Clyde Shaw, Jean Walker, Barbara Robbins, and others in the cast. Outstanding tech- nical contributions through- out the year were made by Lewis Trahan, Edwina Mil- sted, Betty Lejeune, Betty Prince, Scranton Mouton, and Jayne Elle Guillory. The Cougars took an early seven-point lead when their ace freshman tailback, and leading ground gainer of the Lone Star Conference, went off left tackle for thirty-two yards for six points. The Bulldogs didn ' t settle down until the final period, when Paul DeGiovanni recovered a Houston fumble on the Cougar 21, and Buddy Budd plunged over after several plays from the two-yard line. Again in the final period Paul Niel intercepted a Houston pass, and after two aerial attempts Raymond Didier pulled down NieTs toss and galloped down the sidelines for six points with sixteen seconds of playing time remaining. Niel ' s attempt around end for the extra point was short by a yard. Johnson and Wingmen eason 1946 . . . The Team SOUTHWESTERN— 13 STEPHEN F. Tackle Don Petit ' s conversion was good. In the third period a bad pass from center got past Theo Fakier for a safety and two points for the Lumberjacks. The Lions marched forty- eight yards for their first score, but the Bulldogs tied it up at 7-7 when Buddy Budd went over from the six just before the half ended. To open the third period the Bulldogs marched eighty yards to a score with Budd going over from the eleven. At this point the Bulldogs dis- carded their powerful running attack for a poor and ineffective pass- ing attempt. In the third period the score was tied when Davis caught a pass in the end zone. Again in the final period it was Davis, this time tossing to end Pat Kennelly in the end zone. Sparked by All-American Harry Gilmer the Tide got off to a slow start and were held to a lone touchdown in the first period. By half time the Tide stretched the margin to 20-0, as the reluctant Bulldog defense began to tire before the Bama power. Both teams failed to show their potential offensive punch because of wet ground and a heavy mist that hung over the field. Little Benny Ray Noble broke a scoreless deadlock in the third period when he went across from the three, after a long pass had brought the ball to that point from mid-field. In the opening period the Bulldogs halted a Wildcat scoring threat to march eighty-one yards for the first score of the game. In the second period end Spike Landry took Fakier ' s pass over the chalk marker to make the half time score read 13-0. The Bulldogs continued to march in the second half with Forris, Budd, Thurman and Pokier taking the hide over. Hattiberg tallied four points out of six attempts through the cross bars. 1 19 4 6 SOUTHWESTERN— 6 LA. TECH— 34 This was one of the games which we would rather not talk about. In this one nothing seem- ed to go right. The Techsters drew first blood early in the first quarter when they pushed over a quick touchdown. The Bulldogs come roaring back when they took the kick off and marched down the field. Soon after this Tech took the ball over again and were never headed after that. The Bulldogs could get almost down to the goal line but never seemed to be able to get the ball over. When the game ended the Bulldogs were down on the 5-yard line, and, from all appearances, would have made an- other touchdown on the next play. In this game the Bulldogs were beaten by passes. Tech scored three touchdowns on passes, one of which was deflected into the arms of one of the players in the end zone. When the game was over there was a sad return to their homes for the old grads who had come to see the team run over another arch enemy. SOUTHWESTERN— 14 NORTH WESTERNED When the Bulldogs went their merry way to play the Demons of Northwestern there were some in the student body who would not have given anything for their chances of coming off the field the victors. Things went along pretty evenly until late in the game when the Bulldogs got their teeth into the leather and pushed over a touchdown. Al Hcrttieburg converted to make the score 7-0. Later in the fourth quarter the Bulldogs got going again when Theo Fakier broke loose and scored. Hattieburg again converted to make the score 14-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. When the game ended the score stood as was. This was the second of a string of scoreless games which at the end of the season was still intact. In their last three games the Bulldogs ran up a total of 104 points to nothing for their opponents. Dave Fisher Sam Scelfo SOUTHWESTERN- 26 UNION 0 Opening football relations with a new team, the Bulldogs didn ' t play the perfect host. The first half of the game went back and forth in a see-saw manner. Neither team got any- where. The Bulldogs got down to the ten-yard line several times but could never get the ball across into pay dirt. Early in the second half the Bulldogs pushed their way down to the six-yard line. From that point the Bulldogs Marura bucked his way over into pay dirt. Later in the same quarter Chappuis broke through the Union line and carried the ball 44 yards into pay dirt. Early in the last quarter Theo Fakier, playing his last game for the Bulldogs, broke around right end to score another six points. Soon after this Chappuis re- turned to the game. The first time he carried the ball he broke through the middle of the line to score his third touchdown of the game. This ended the scoring. Al Hattieburg kicked two extra points to make the score 26-0 when the final gun went off. mm Bill Bradley Roy Veazey E. Broussard John swings from the deck When it was announced that the school would not be able to support a boxing team last fall the Vets ' Club got to work and saw to it that there v as a boxing team to represent the school. It took some little time to straighten out the many details of sponsoring the team. There was little doubt that plenty of bouts could be ob- tained for the team. Louie Campbell and Dean Harrell were named as coaches. Early in the winter an exhibi- tion bout was held to shew the public what the school had to offer in the line of boxers. The problem of lining up opponents who could give the team any competition at all proved to be no easy one. Most of the larger schools had their schedule made out earlier in the year and could not arrange dates. Bouts were arranged with McNeese lunior College of Lake Charles. The first time the Bulldogs met them in Lake Charles they came home with the scalps of the Purple and Gold to the tune of 5-3. In the 120 pound class Milt Pastor won handily in a TKO over Allan. In the 127- pound class Ray Fontenot lost a close decision to A. Manuel. At 135 the Bulldogs received another TKO credit when G. R. Neef scored easily over P. Elliot. At 145 Jaco LeBlanc scored a decision for the Bulldogs over J. Landry. At 155 Albert Daly lost another close de- cision to L. Jones of McNeese. At 165 pounds George Johns lost a close decision to B. Jobe of McNeese. Things started happening when Murle Mac McClelland climbed into the ring in the lightheavy division. He scored handily over Meagher. The heavyweight bout was not held due to McNeese ' s forfeit in that division. Winner on this basis was Russel Provost. Two weeks later McNeese journeyed to Southwestern to engage the Bulldogs on their home canvas. In these engagements the Bulldogs pulled the fat out of the fire in the last three fights on the cards. To start things off Pastor repeated his earlier victory in the 120 pound class. Fontenot again lost to Manuel. Neef repeated his victory in the 135 pound class. Daly fought in the 145 pound class and LeBlanc in the 155 pound class. They both dropped close decisions. That put the Bull- dogs one man down in the scoring. When George Johns went into the ring many hopes and prayers were riding on his shoulders. He handily reversed the decision from the previous bout to pull the Bulldogs up even. When Mac McClelland climbed through the ropes things were looking much better for the Bulldogs. He won an easy victory over his opponent to send the locals out in front 4-3. In the heavy- weight division Frank Fera- chi went into the ring as strictly a dark horse. He had only started working out the day before the bout. He won a decision that was hard earned since he had to pur- sue his opponent over the ring throughout the entire three rounds. This brought the end of the abbreviated season during which the Bulldogs proved that they were able to move about in fistic circles as easily as they had in pre- war days. Next year the en- tire squad will be eligible to return to the ring and with the new men we will get this next year should prove to be the nucleus of another great team. In a clinch WE WON SOME. ..LOST SOME Jimmy Neef Russell Provost MuRLE McClelland When Coach Reinhardt looked over his prospects for the season last fall he couldn ' t decide what his possibilities were. His- club was largely made up of unknown quantities. Most of his players had shown up well in the Services or in high school but the big question was — could they play ball under college conditions? They promptly proved that they could when they downed their first seven op- ponents by top heavy scores — averaging more than 65 points a game to their opponents 33. The eighth game brought Centenary to town and a very close 46-45 defeat for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs bounced back a couple of nights later and downed Crowley Rice Mills 88-16, the highest score of the season. Northwestern came to town — touted as the team to beat. When they left they were deflated to the tune of 76-61. This game saw the Bulldogs come from Allen Boudreaux Harris Levert Richard Vines Audley Gordon Counter Clockwise — Howard LeBlanc, Harris Levert, Hoyt Clark, Allen Boudreaux, Richard Vines . . . SEASON well behind to take the commanding lead. The team then took to the road and met their first conference defeat at the hands of Tech 58-68. Journeying to Hammond the boys rolled over the Lions to the tune of 71-35. At home they entertained Tulane in what was perhaps the best game of the season, losing in the closing moments 46-45. At Shreveport the Centenary Gents fell 46- 39 to put the ' Dogs back on the winning path again. Louisiana Colege fell 73-18 at home. Playing in New Orleans the Bull- dogs found that Tulane had a little too much for them as they lost 55-41 to the team that was second only to Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference. Tech came to town for the season ' s last home game and fell before the determined Bulldogs 39-36. To close out the season the ' Dogs journeyed to Northwestern and had to be satisfied Another Score with a three-way tie for the Conference title. They dropped this one 60-54. The Bulldogs of Southwestern, the Demons of Northwestern, and the Bulldogs of La. Tech all shared in the title. If was a great season for Coach Reinhardt and the Cagers. It was rough for every team in the nation. The Bulldogs definitely proved them- selves to be one of the best of them all. Men such as Fontenot, Elkind, Catha, Gordon, Verrett, LeVert, Vines, Clark, Arms, Boudreaux, and LeBlanc proved their ability to play throughout the season. Fontenot and Elkind gathered All-Conference honors. Fontenot was named the Honorary Team Captain for the season. He is also CAGERS . . . SOUTHWESTERN Ho YT Clark Lloyd Verrett Caroll Fontenot Marty Elkind the only senior on the team. With this exception the squad returns intact next year. With Iheso men and the new men coming up the Bulldogs should be the scourge of the hardwood courts next season. Fbntonot led the team with 210 points in the scon ' ng column. Catha followed him with 196. Elkind had 166, Gordon 131, Verrett 103, LeVert 77, Boudreaux 69, Clark 44, Vines 30, LeBlanc 27, and Arms 2. Any attempt to name the team ' s outstanding player would be futile. It was team work all the way that won the games all the way through the season. From the court it was the sharpshooting of the team which forced the defense to come out and to make it easier for the fast breaking plays the Bulldogs used to such great advan- tage. Had it not been for the work of their team mates Fontenot and Elkind could never have gained the honors they did. In the eighteen games they played the Bulldogs rolled up a total score of 1,095 points for a 60.9 average to their opponents 716 and 39.6 average. Never during the entire season were the Bulldogs decisively beaten. The second Tulane game came the nearest to that of anything, this being played in a cold gymnasium. Coach Rienhardt is certain to have a glorious season next year with the material he will have and the ability he has with ball players.
