THE 194 6 YEARBOOK OF SOUTH nE ST EH i L O UISIA NA INSTITUTE LAEAYETTE. LOUISIANA CADIEN Dedication he task of guiding Southwest- ern through the war years was a re- sponsible and arduous one. It is fitting that this L ' Acadien, the first since the return of our men from the battlefields of World War II, should be dedicated to President Fletcher, who never lost touch with these men while they were away in the service of their country. As a tribute to his earnest efforts and his unfaltering faith in the future of Southwestern, we gratefully, and respectfully dedicate this volume of L ' Acadien to President Joel Lafayette Fletcher. Reinhardt FOOTBALL 138 The Bulldog ' s first post war appearance as a football team was a disappointing one. Coach Louey Whitman was faced with the problem of adjusting his starting lineup with a majority of inexperienced college freshmen, as the last group of Navy V-12 ' s were only on hand for the 1st half of the season. Although the season was not an outstanding one in triumphs, it was a successful one in team spirit and fight, for the Bulldogs played their heart out in every game. They gained only one triumph in the fruitless 1945 season, a 13-7 conquest of our arch-rivals, La. Tech. Leo Coe, a returnee to the Bulldog Gridiron after three years in the service, sparked the team from his fullback position in the latter part of the season. Well seasoned and hard to stop, with a good kicking foot to boot, Coe gave Southwestern ' s rivals a taste of what to expect from other returning veterans in the coming 1946 season. Other outstanding players included London Colquitt, Mike Popevec, A. P. Comeaux, Al Hatteberg, Howard Wilcox, Audley Gordon, George Gore, Bob Tabarlet, Fred Chaplain. I John L. In the opener with Lake Charles, the Bulldogs met some of the best footballing airmen in the First Air Force. In a last minute change in their lineup, Lake Charles received a flight of heavy-weights that charged the Bulldog team with more power than the locals could stand. Then a week later, the Bulldogs met one of the strongest teams in the Southeastern Conference when they played the Mississippi State Maroons. Mississippi State met a shifty and speedy team in S. L. I., but their definite edge in experience and drive power defeated the bulldogs. La. Tech was the next team for Coach Whitman ' s charges. Southwestern led Tech throughout the 1st half by 12 points, not giving them one opportunity to score, but the visiting team romped through the S. L. I. line in the last half to win 14-12. Several threats that the Bulldogs launched were repulsed as neither team could penetrate the end zone. And then came another overpowering team. South- western traveled to Florida U. to get dished another terrific whipping. The Bulldogs fought valiantly through- out the game, but Florida ' s working T was too much for the frosh studded Bulldogs. Barely recovering from the Florida game, the S. L. I. lads got another shellacking from another Southeastern Conference eleven. This time it was the mighty Auburn eleven. The Bulldogs were shoved all over the field in the first half, but the last half found them pushing the Auburn assault back but not enough to score. Final score. Auburn 52, Southwestern 0. C. Reinhardt U4 Tlie 1945-46 basketball season proved to be a hot and cold one for the Bulldogs. Coach Dutch Reinhardt brought in an assortment of cool-headed, dead eye freshmen who did surprisingly well. They started off the season red hot when they rolled over four straight opponents. Their first defeat was in a close game with the Texas Aggies, always a top racking team in the nation. The Bulldogs had tough luck when they started oull to play Rice Institute in Houston, ending up in a wreck halfway there. But the real bad news came when the Chollet brothers were found ineligible. The team really missed the fine ball playing of the Chollet brothers, but they went on as well as could be expected and were a great threat for the L. I. C. title. Leroy Chollet, who received Ail-American honors at Loyola, sparked the Bulldogs while he was eligible. Other stalwarts on the team were Lloyd Verret, Roy Young, Al Chollet, Kenneth Chapman, Hoyt Clark, Slim LeBlanc, Glenn Powell, Audley Gordon, L. J. Raymond, and Buddy Johnson. The boys all played a good brand of ball, their worst defeat coming at the hands of Baylor University which was one of the top teams in the nation. To show their actual offensive power, the Bulldogs garnered 110 runs to their opponents 74. They knocked out 113 hits and sported a team batting average, excluding pitchers, of .303. Clyde Didier led the team at the plate with a lusty .348 followed by Allen Boudreaux and Bob Voitier. The most vicious attack was turned on Louisiana College as they were swamped 24 to 5 by the Bulldogs. Louisiana Tech maintained their jinx by defeating Coach Johnson ' s boys twice for the L. I. C. championship. The pitchers, though lacking experience, turned in several nicely pitched games. Lefty Harrison pitched a 4-hitter in downing Tulane 7-1; Arceneaux defeated Camp Polk 6-1 on 6 hits; Bill Chiquelin set down Camp Polk again 8-1, allowing only 5 hits; and Arnoult fashioned a 6 hit ball game against Lake Charles AAF.
