With the presentation and Crowning of Miss Mary Margaret Ohvier as Queen, the An- nual Camellia Pageant came to colorful and brilliant climax. Preceding the majestic en- trance of the gueen was a clever series of short dramas, depicting the peculiar wit and customs of the country around Southwestern. These were typical of Old Louisiana and included such well known things as the Fait-Do-Do, The Indian Dance, The Spinning and Cradle Making and The Serenading of the Village Coguettes by their Lovers. i ' 4 ' ' i ' , -lUfCtS Blue Key Darling Engineer ' s Sweetheart V-12 Sweetheart Victory Queen llll LJ ±ML J. Coach Louey Whitman, head football mentor, opened his seasonal practice with a glittering cast of grid- sters, most of whom had seen only high school competition. With a Marine and Navy Unit to depend on for driving power, the Bulldog tutor found himself with a complete squad of hard-working and potential football- ers. But by mid season, an entirely new team had to replace the transferred V-12ers. On September twenty-second, the Bulldogs appeared on the gridiron for the first time since their sensa- tional triumph over the Arkansas Aggies in Oil Bowl at Houston, Texas on January first, against the well- seasoned La Garde General Hospital eleven on the local field. Whitman ' s pig-skinners passed, ran, and intercepted from the kickoff until the final whistle. Staging a roaring victory over the khaki-clad squad by a score of 53-0, the Bulldogs attracted the attention of football fans throughout the state. Next in line on the schedule was the All-American geared Keesler Field aggregation of Biloxi, Missis- sippi. Again the Bulldogs played on their home field, but this time with less fortune. Sparked by national figure in football, the servicemen routed the Bulldog team and scored a 13-0 victory. Oil Bowl rivals met to give the football fans of South Louisiana one of the most thrilling games of the season. Arkansas A. and M. visited the local field and presented one of the classiest grid contests of the season. Although the Bulldogs fought hard, and constantly growled throughout the sixty minutes of play, the visitors were too much for the local squad and the game rested at 18-6. Southwestern ' s Bulldogs traveled for the first time of the season on October fourteenth to meet their age-old rivals and canine cousins the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The Southwestern team scored a black-out defeat over their hosts and left the gridiron with blue ribbon honors with a 15-0 score on the records. Northwestern State College of Natchitoches was the next visitor to the local gridiron. Still in the win- spirit, the Southwestern gridsters staged another coveted victory and defeated the Northwestern Demons by a lop-sided score of 19-7. 121 Another out-of-state team invaded the Bulldog territory on November fourteenth. This time it was Mill- saps College of Mississippi. The Millsaps Majors whipped the Bulldogs by a 19-0 score. The Southwestern red and whites could not stand up against the experienced and heavy-weighing visiting squad and was forced to admit defeat. In another traveling game, the Bulldogs landed at the Lake Charles Army Air Base. The Bulldogs open- ed a barrage of passes against the Airmen, and defeated them by a 24-0 score. Although the Lake Charles Flyers were experienced and classified as veterans in football, the Bulldog team was perked up to win. Louisiana Tech made their return appearance at McNaspy Stadium and defeated the Southwestern eleven by a nose-out score of 7-0. The Tech Bulldogs had increased their momentum since the last clash, while the Bulldogs had suffered a loss of a complete team, as the Marines terminated their stay at South- western before the game. Homecoming found the Bulldogs matched against the Northwestern State College Demons again. A water-soaked field was the scene of the Bulldogs ' most dashing performance. Amid merky mire, the Bull- dogs out-played, out-maneuvered, and out-scored the Northwestern Demons by a score of 7-6. Southwestern ' s 1944 coaching staff included, beside head coach Louey Whitman, Dutch Reinhardt, line coach, Navy Sp. A. G. Carman, Freshmen coach, and J. C. Dutch Reinhardt, trainer. The Bulldogs lettered forty gridsters. BASEBALL TRACK in true fiction fashion, bouthwestern Louisiana Institute ' s track squad carried on one of the most success- ful seasons recorded on the Bulldog books. Coach Robert L. Browne, track tutor, produced a winning nine man squad that carried honors from New Orleans on to Austin, Texas, five claiming top notch honors at all the Bulldog attended meets. Southwest- em ' s track squad attracted the attention of sports fans throughout the South. Southwestern ' s cinder-ace, Spencer Johnson, who was a Navy Trainee, claimed fir st place in the S.A.A.U. Cross-country Championship run in New Orleans in the inaugural contest of the season on December 16, with a new record being registered for the run. Johnson ' s clocking registered 20 minutes and 19 seconds. The Bulldogs also claimed the team trophy. January 6 found the Bulldogs in another winning streak. The 39th annual Jackson Day Run in New Or- leans was the score of the Bulldogs ' second first place of the season. Johnson ' s brilliant running tallied an- other Bulldog victory, this time in a longer distance run with a clocking of 35 minutes and 45 seconds. The gala event of the year, Southwestern ' s own Relay Carnival was held at McNaspy Stadium on March 31. In spite of track that was slowed down by constant rainfall, Southwestern ' s tracksters shattered another record in the mile. Again Johnson was the winner. The timing was 4:38. The Texas Relays at Austin, Texas was the next contest for the Bulldogs. Southwestern claimed second place honors in the 3000 meter run. In competition with the finest cindermen in the South, Southwestern ' s thin clads raced to more honors. In a dual meet with Louisiana Tech, Southwestern ' s tracksters defeated Tech by a score of 74-57. South- western ' s Bulldog runners defeated the Tech Bulldogs in easy fashion, in spite of the fact that Tech sported a line of veteran runners. In the final run of the season, Southwestern claimed two first places at the S.A.A.U. meet in the Crescent City. Again Johnson set the pace for Bulldog victories, this time surpassing his own record-breaking timing at the mile, with a 4:33 timing. The two mile went to the Bulldogs also. Again Johnson claimed blue ribbon honors. The speedy thin clad took the two mile honors in 10 minutes flat. 124 BASKETBALL Southwestern Louisiana Institute ' s 1944-45 basketball squad, com- prised mainly of Navy V-12 trainees, met with a comparatively dis- astrous season, although the Bulldog cagers exhibited smooth, cool- headed playing throughout the season. Not evenly matched, the Bulldogs met ten servicemen teams, while the schedule provided for only seven intercollegiate contests. The hitch in the rope that seemed to trip the Bulldog squad was the mass consolidation of teams in service centers. Not following the former method of selecting a team, the army teams pooled their entire camp resources against a comparative handfuU of ex-high school Bulldog basketeers. Southwestern ' s Dutch Reinhardt, mentor for the Bulldog cagers for a number of years, supervised rigid practice for his loopers, and man- aged to meet and handle well the over-powering opponent. Southwestern ' s cagers claimed four victories during the season, while they suffered thirteen defeats. Many of the Bulldog ' s defeats came during the last seconds of play, and in many cases resulting in the score standing with only a one or two point difference with the Bulldogs getting the short end of the deal. Assisting Coach Reinhardt with getting the Bulldogs ' five in motion was Dutch Rauschenbach whose main post was line coach for the Bulldog forward wall. The Bulldogs lettered sixteen cagers.
