MPHASIZING JDlJRX;ON IB rTION TO THE WAR PROGRAM OF EVENTS O AND FORTYlT 1943 THE CLOSE OF THIS ACADEMIC YEAR, 1 9 4 2 - 1943, FINDS HUNDREDS OF SOUTHWESTERN MEN AND WOMEN EMBATTLED IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM AT HOME AND BEYOND THE SEAS. AS A SMALL TESTIMONIAL OF ITS PRIDE IN THEM AND OF ITS LOYALTY AND GRATITUDE TO THEM, THE STAFF OF L ' ACADIEN OFFERS THIS VOLUME DEDICATED TO THEIR SAFETY AND HONOR. down the weapons of war and then take up the weapons of peace. This time we will have a victory with peace to prevent our sons and daughters from having to face the horrors of another world war. The last peace was a peace created to fill the selfish aims of a few men and the nations they represented. If any peace of the future is to be a lasting one it must be one in which God had his say. 1 .AND MORALE.. The bright j costumes worn by the done- ers add a touch of gaiety j to the festival. This year the theme of the pageant helped to promote good will with our South American neighbors. The songs and dances of our good neighbors were ex- pertly imitated by the per- formers, and stage decora- tions included the flags of our Latin American neigh- bors, with Old Glory in its traditional center position. Congratulations should be extended to the students and faculty members, espe- cially the members of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and the Depart- ment of Art, who were re- sponsible for this demon- stration of such beauty and of such value in cultivating Pan-American friendship. GEANT Abandoning the procedure ob- served in previous years of rushing and pledging girls during the first month of the fall semester, social sororities this year waited until the second semester had begun to give their rush parties and have pledge day. Pictured on this and the two following pages are scenes of the formal receptions held by all the sororities during the week before pledge day. SORORITY RECEPTIONS SWEAT IS ON Miss Edwards calls. The S Club annually gives its S Club Dance the night of the Homecoming game. Al Stiegman is president of the group. The club this year sent out membership keys to S Club members in the armed services. A special room is set aside in the boys ' gym for the use of the members. 126 CHEERLEADERS The Bulldog fans saw one of the finest groups of cheerleaders in the state this year. The chief yell leader Arthur Lee led his colleagues through many hard tumbling practices in order to give the fans their Friday night treat. Althea Roesch and Maxine Dunphy added a touch of beauty and loveliness to the squad while George Berry and Denbo Montgomery flipped and carried on as monkey men should. This group demonstrated what co- operation and practice would accomplish. They took their jobs seriously and got the results that any football team, coach, or fan would appreciate in cheerleaders. BROWNE Director of Athletics LOUEY WHITMAN Head Football Coach SEASON Southwestern ' s first war time football team began under rather adverse conditions; not only had Coaches John Cain and Gee Mitchell joined the armed forces, but many eligible lettermen had also answered Uncle Sam ' s summons. Called in to fill the breech when the future of Bulldog football looked bleak was genial Coach Louie Whitman who guided the Canines through the 1942 cam- paign. A former star for the University of Wyoming, Whit- man obtained the able services of Coaches Bill Steven- son and Clarence Strange. Stevenson was well known at Southwestern having been a key figure in the Bulldogs renown forward wall of 1938, The Seven Oaks . Strange had spent his undergraduate days at L.S.U. and played on their nationally famous teams. Aiding the new mentors was Athletic Director R. L. Browne and the Bulldog trainer, Dutch Reinhardt. J. C. REINHARDT Trainer BILL STEVENSON Line Coach C. M. STRANGE Freshman Coach 129 Homecoming queen and her court Charlie Robinson Al Stiegman A RESUME Bob Voitier Journeying to Montgomery, the Bulldogs inaug- urated the 1942 season with a tussel with the mighty Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama. The crushing and diversified attack of the Big Red ma- chine proved too much for the game Bulldogs, who were greatly hampered by lack of reserve power and Alabama triumphed 54-0. In a thrilling wide open gridiron battle. Coach Whitman ' s stalwarts opened the home season with a decisive win over the Southeastern Lions 35-13. By the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs had rolled up a 16-0 lead and many freshmen were getting a taste of varsity play. Bickham and Voitier were out- standing for the Red and White. Next visitor to McNaspy Stadium was the highly touted Ouachita College eleven of Arkadelphia, Ark- ansas. The Arkansas squad, although outplayed by the Bulldogs, were the winners, 6-0. A high 42 yard pass was the scoring play early in the first quarter. In the final period the Bulldog forward wall rose to new heights in holding their heavy opponents for three plays on the two yard line. Douglas, Ramsay, Salassi, Bickham, Broussard, Guidry and Baldwin were stalwarts in the line while the entire backfield of Robinson, Williams, Voitier and Steigman were help in the backfield. 130 Ney Williams John Ramsay Gene Baldwin OF THE SEASON Third in a series of five consecutive home games was the Canines ' engage- ment with Camp Beaure- gard. Taking advantage of every opportunity, the Southwesterners smoth- ered the hapless soldiers 62-0. Theo Fakier, reserve tailback, snake hipped for three scores and fresh- men backs Lambousy, Boudreaux, Keller and Johnson rolled up tallies for the Bulldogs. The rul- ing allowing freshmen to compete in varsity sports was enabling the South- western coaches to give their hard hit varsity needed rest. Biggest thrill of the evening was a 75 yard run by Fitzgerald, Southwestern end, after scoop- ing up a Tech fumble. Try for extra point was no good. Later in the third stanza Charlie Robinson carried the pigskin over the goal after a long heave from Voitier to Fitzgerald had brought the ball to the four yard marker. A sustained 58 yard drive netted the upstate Bulldogs their only score. With- out once relinguishing the ball, the Demons drove to a score in ten plays with Bambrick hitting the Bulldog front for valuable yardage. Conversion was no good. A few minutes later Southwestern tied up the im- portant conference game by pushing frosh fullback, George Lambousy, over the goal line. In the second half, unable to make headway through the Bull- dog line, the Demons kicked a field goal and went into the lead 9-6. When Voitier was tackled behind his own goal line in the last guarter, the Demons added two more, points to their score. Bickham, Wilson Broussard, John Ramsay, Charlie Robinson, Carroll Salassi, Al Stiegman, Ney Williams and Bob Voitier. Coach Whitman ' s charges invaded the Lone Star State for their final game of the year with Sam Houston Lumberjacks. Handicapped by freezing weather and a sleet-like rain the Bulldogs were knocked off 7-0. The Lumberjacks scored the only touchdown after blocking a Southwestern punt and re- covering the ball on the Bulldogs twelve yard line. Thus ended the 1942 football campaign. Southwestern placed second in the L.I.C. race. Al Stiegman and Bob Voitier were named on the first all-L.I.C. team and T. E. Bickham and Charlie Robinson were placed on the second eleven. Robert Fitzgerald, John Ramsay and Wilson Broussar d received hon- orable mention, Bickham and Voitier received honorable mention on the Associated Press ' s Little All-American sguad. The Louisiana Normal Demons came through for second place with 62 ¥2 points. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs of Ruston were third with 15 1 3 points and the Southeastems Lions of Hammond trailed with 8 points. The Southwestern spikemen made their points by taking 10 firsts and a tie for first, 5 secohds, 1 third and 2 ties for third, and 4 fourth places. Aillet of Southwestern was high point man of the meet with 1 1 V4 points made in first in the 440 dash and 220 dash and anchor man on the winning relay teams. Tripp of Normal and R. Roy of Southwestern tied for second place individual honors with two firsts each, Tripp making his in the discus and the shot put and Roy getting his in both hurdle races. Although the track was fast and there was little wind to hinder the athletes, no records in the conference meet were bettered. R. Roy came the closest to bettering former marks when the South- western star ran both the high and low hurdles in one-tenth of a second below the old marks set in 1935 and 1933, respectively. TECH Coach Bob Browne ' s Southwestern Louisiana Institute track team easily defeated the spikemen from Louisiana Tech this afternoon netting a total of 96 points while the visitors could gather only 21. A sharp rain during the meet sent the fans scurrying to shelter and cleared the field of athletes not participating in the events at the time, and left the track and field muddy. All running events were slowed up considerably. The Bulldogs dominated all running events, placing first in all and second in seven of the eight races. Topping all athletes in individual scoring was Griffin Brumfield, Southwestern senior, who took first place in the century and in the 220 yard dashes and anchored the Bull- dog team in the mile relay . . . Brumfield accounted for 1 1 Vi markers and was closely followed by his mate Louis Keigley, broad jumper and hurdler, who amassed 1 1 points. The Techmen got off to a slow start by losing 4-2, but had better hunting the next game by defeating the Slimen 4-0. In the second series of S.L.I.-Tech games, the slugging nine of the North Louisiana ball club made a clear sweep by winning both games 6-0 and 10-3. This select group of sophomore, junior, and sen- ior girls have worked hard to achieve perfec- tion in their drills and eagerly assist in all ac- tivities which might benefit by the sparkle and attractiveness they provide. Not only have the Red Jackets performed at all the football games and other programs on the campus; they have also participated in such community activities as the Army Day and Navy Day parades. The curtailment of Southwestern ' s intercol- legiate athletic program will not result in a lull in the activities of the Red Jackets, because they have already lent their support to patriotic movements and because they plan to function as a victory corps, whose purpose will be to perform tasks on the campus that might otherwise be left undone because of the labor shortage. 149 More calisthenics And still more calisthenics YSICAL EDUCATION 151 VICTORY THROUGH PHYSICAL FITNESS The Health and Physical Education Department made its slogan Victory Through Physical Fitness in mapping out its program for the academic year 1942-43. An obstacle course modelled upon the Navy ' s pre-flight obstacle courses was set up on the edge of the training school grounds. Later, an egually tough obstacle course was set up for the women. The physical training of the girls has been emphasized because of the need of healthy, vigorous bodies to build for our country ' s future. Ex- tensive achievement tests are periodically given to check on the individual ' s improvement and to determine what exercises are needed to build a well-proportioned body. As an example of this, after tests revealed shoulder and arm weaknesses, cal- isthenics were then concentrated on those exercises that would toughen these muscles. Constantly, the boys and girls have been reminded of their duty to be prepared to take part in America ' s drive to victory. With an excellent and untiring staff, the department has helped many of the students who through their gym classes have de- veloped a respect for the need of being healthy, aggressive, and tough. Proof of the success of the group training of the students came with the spring field day when all the students took part in a public demonstration of Southwestern ' s war program that will insure Victory Through Physical Fitness. 152 WOMEN ' S PHYSICAL EDUCATION Presented here is a pictorial ac- count of the accelerated program of health and physical education in- augurated this year for the women at Southwestern. The physical education schedule has been stepped up for all students so that freshmen and sophomores now attend classes in physical edu- cation five days a week, rather than two as in previous years, while juniors and seniors take three hours a week instead of none. Not only have the hours been in- creased; new methods of training have been devised and new equip- EDUCATION ment has been obtained. An out- standing innovation in the girls ' classes is the obstacle course that was constructed this year between the gymnasium and the tennis courts. The course is composed of such ob- stacles as parallel bars, overhead bars, upright and inclined walls, hurdles, and rope swings. The women ' s instructors have placed special emphasis on outside activities, taking their classes on cross-country hikes, having them roller-skate and ride bicycles, and giving calisthenics outside on sunny days. The department has emphasized defense training by teaching the girls fire-fighting tactics. And time has been found in which to give the girls drills and exercises designed to develop grace, balance, and poise. 4 WOMEN ' S PHYSICAL EDUCATION I 156 0 ■1 I ,1 NEWMAN CLUB Hamic Hebert Songe Hebert OFFICERS President ROSALIE HAMIC Vice-Pres LEONARD HEBERT Secretary EVELYN SONGE Treasurer ARDLY HEBERT The Newman Club of Southwestern is organized to promote the intellectual, social, and religious life among Catholic stu- dents here at college, and to aid, through its organization, in maintaining the high morale of Southwestern.
