NINETEEN THIRTY-SEVEN Page 72 PAGLIACCI (On Hearing Jagel Sing) Silver streaks on the pasty mask of a clown! How can one say that life is good or life n bad β when life is all things? It is a thing of laughter and sweat and tears β a sad sweet song of love, a nnelancholy melody of tender pain. To live β to love β to suffer! Never is happiness so dear as when the soul is crying in its loneliness, striving for something it con never hove. Never is laughter so sweet as when it is washed with tears. Oh that pom, that is the most sublime gift that life con offer. Some- times it rises from its tranquil, even tempo to o mighty, crashing crescendo, and it seems that at last the Symphony is going to reach the Finis. Always, however. The Great Director signals with His baton and the song softens into a swelling largo. Often, the Melody is light and refreshing, OS a thousand reeds and woodwinds race through endless polkas. At other times, the Director mo- tions for a solo and the haunting, mysterious strain almost reaches perfection in tone and execution. Frequently, in moments of black des- pair, the melody descends to deeper octaves and the soul trembles to the vibration of the melancholy pitch. It never remains in these morose keys, for always the Director motions, and other instruments rescue the song. There is one moment, however, when even the Master cannot save the song, and cannot spare the player. This is the moment when the instrument, worn from playing countless cadenzas, shatters into a thousand pieces. In the great Unfinished Symphony the passing is but lightly noted β perhaps by other players very near. The Great Director always replaces, for there are many with Melodies who patiently await a choir. β Scribblers ' Script. She is a member of the Nu Sigma Kappa Sorority. CECIL THOMPSON Thompson is a senior in the College of Education. He has led the cheers of Southwestern only one year. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. MIRIAM NICHOLSON Miriam was Freshman Cheerleader and Varsity Clieerleader for one year. She is o member of and also president of the Delta Epsilon Nu Sorority. ALMA MATER Alma Mater, beloved old Southwestern, Pride of our Southland so fair! Oaks and pines and sweet magnolia ' s beauty, Show forth thy charm so rare. Alma Mater, for honor, truth and wisdom Thy halls for aye shall stand; Loyal sons and daughters sing proclaiming Here ' s my heart and hand. Page 1 75 THENES HAJECATE Mick the Greek is the title. Mick was captain of the 1936 edition of the Red and White football squad and filled In the right guard position. He is a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and never more will he be seen whooping up his war-cries and pep- ping up a Southwestern grid team. No coach could foil to shed a tear over the graduation of a player of such capability β he could smear the greatest boll carriers for losses and rip open the strongest of lin es. We shall never forget Mick β and least of all, his smile will perpetuate in our memories. The world ' s best wishes to you, Mick ! J. Y. DUNCAN Jerry , who is one of Southwestern ' s most versatile athletes, calls Alexandria his home town, hie has one more year of pigskinning and will again handle a terminal post. J. Y. has lettered in three different sports and chalks up a high scholastic record as well. VERNON TURNER When Jimmy White, S.L.I. ' s long distance kicker, was disabled, it was Turner who answered Coach Wilbank ' s prayers . Vernon displayed unusual punting ability as a Sophomore and, according to his past performances, this coupled with his bock- field playing, will help moke football history for Southwestern in coming years. Stick to it, Vernon, we ore wishing you luck! Page 1 7i LAWRENCE JACOBS Jake has crooned his swan song as far as the gridiron is concerned, and never more will this big tackle, stamped with number 44 , be seen crushing and rushing opponents of Southwestern. Big Jake was at his best this year despite an early-season- injury to his leg. Keep up the good work, Jake, and may success crown all of your future efforts! RALPH WEBER Cowboy Weber is another of several Southwest- ern stars turned out by a Texas High School. His has been the task of holding down the center posi- tion and right well has he fulfilled the job. Here ' s to o successful forthcoming season, Weber. BILLY GARTH From the pine-clad hills of Mississippi to the cane breaks of Southwestern Louisiana is a long dis- tonce, but that is no handicap to William Price Billy Garth. Billy is no galloping giant, but he is a field general of no mean ability. General Billy is only a junior and judging from his initial venture, he should be on outstanding figure in next yeor ' s Bulldog broln trust . Page 177 WEEDMAN DUHE A good, fast, little man is always appreciated on a football squad, but a good, fast, big nnon such as Zuzu is much more desirable. Duhe has one more year of gridironing before the curtain falls. May that lost yeor be a worthy climax to his long career at Southwestern. VERNON BELL ' Tis a sad story when the first page of Dixie ' s vorsity football record is read. Dixie received a serious shoulder injury early m the grid campaign and was forced out of action when he was progress- ing rapidly. hHowever, his heart and soul was always with the team. Here ' s more power to you next season, Dixie ! STANLEY CRESAP City Slicker is what some would surname Stanley β but not us β we coll him Greased Lightning . Stanley is probobly the lightest gridster on the roster but for what he lacks in weight, he accounts for in speed and vividness. This agile youth has created many flashes of thrills by his lightning-like dashes. Page 178 ROBERT DeROUEN Zipp no this is not a nnisprint β it ' s only our minnical expressing of whot hoppens when Bob carries the pigskin and gallops away. Bob , o loyal son of New Iberia, is a will-o-the-wisp in the broken field and his elusive tactics gave many a Sli opponent the heebie-jeebies lost season. Bobby has and will ably perform his duties. RANDOLPH LOVE hiere ' s another mighty mite from that hot-bed of football stars, Alexandria ' s Bolton hiigh. Little Ranny displaces only five feet and six inches of otmosphere but that doesn ' t say what amount of territory he can cover. Ranny shows promises and should be a wizzord next season. ASHTON BOURGEOIS Playing his initial year of varsity footboll for South- western, Blackie had o most promising season. Should injuries dodge him, his future as o pigskin toter Is assured. Page 179 HORACE ADKINS Little Shorty is the brother of the inimitable Aylmer Shorty Adkins and colls Homer, Louisiana, his chief stamping grounds. He ' s as fast as Jesse Owens; he ' s as elusive as a flea and con spin like a whirlwind. Little Shorty filled a halfback berth until, well, old man Catastrophe swung his scythe and left him with an ailing back. He ' s bock on his feet again, and, watch him cut capers the coming grid season. HENRY WILLIAMS Henry Willioms is his name, but he only answers to Tubby . Another Homer High School star, and 180-pound h a m m e r- ' e m - d o wn tackier β that ' s Tubby . He ' s capable of generating steam-roller power with his bulky body and more than once we hove seen him crush rival linemen. Williams has developed a surprising coordination of power and speed that will make him a dangerous man in any game, on any field, at any time. JOE CRUTHIRDS A war tank on the attack β that ' s Joe Cruthirds. Joe has worn the red and white slip-over only a year now and regardless of that we predict two more successful seasons. Here ' s luck Joe! Page 180 DELBERT JACKSON Here ' s J. Y. ' s running nnate β Delbert Jackson. Del- bert has just tucked away his second and by far his most successful football season of his career at the flank position. He is a marvel on defense, and a sure tackier and crock pass snatcher. Adding the charity marker is also one of his specialties. SIDNEY LeBLANC LeBlanc is the name. Sidney LeBlanc and he ' s from Abbeville, Louisiana, too. A distance runner by birth, he never tires on the football field. Sid is a pugnacious type of guard, who chorges with sur- prising speed and is best when the going is toughest. He ' s calm and capable on defense, knows how to use his weight in blocking and tackling, and aptly fills the role of running guard on offense. What more can one ask of a guord. VERNE WHITE Verne did not get into every game but when he did ploy, he put every ounce of his 157 pounds into every move he mode. He is the roving type of center, a relentless spotter of forward passes and a power in the center section of the line. We ' ll be pulling for you again next fall β keep it up! Page 181 JAMES WHITE A junior In the Commerce Department, Jimmy White is what most proud parents expect of their college-going son. This Lake Charles boy takes his studies seriously and, to be exact, duplicates his scholastic efforts on the oval-bock turf of Sli . Jimmy if a deadly blocker; a marvel on defense; and is incomparable in the kicking division. He is an invaluable man ond, all we can soy Is, watch him go next yeor. HARVEY GARDINER Harvey Gordmer cleoting through his first year as varsity tackle, has chalked up a fine record. He hos size, power, ogility and now with a year of collegiate football tucked away, he should stand out in the line next season. Harvey likes boxing and mixed that with his football β that is, in accordance with the rules. He uses his right to smear the blockers and clasps the boll carrier in his left. That ' s co- ordination! JAMES SANFORD Once again ws come to a position which seldom received the cheers and hero-worship of the crowd. The tackles moke up that group and among them we find the gigantic but amiable Sanford. Docile Sandy transferred to S.L.I, from a junior college and took up the Bulldog cause almost mstantly. But, alas, every knight does not reach his goal, and, in this cose, Sandy suffered a broken arm just when things were running smoothly. He appeared very promising this year and indications pomt to on increosing unit of power next year. THURMAN GENTRY Snow is the proud possessor of a dual personality. On the campus he is a slow-going type who smiles lazily at the profs (and the fems), but on the gridiron he is o fast elusive bock. With one year of added grid experience he fhould hove a very successful season next fall. Page 182 BUL WALLACE Bill Wallace, even though only a junior m college, will no longer carry the Red and White colors of Southwestern into battle. Bill has had one year of footboll at a Junior College and, reluctantly, he must abdicate his role as star end for the Bulldogs, hie, true to the spirit of all Cottontops , has shown spunk and ability on the gridiron. We ' ll nniss hinn on the football field, but we ' ll welcome him into the ranks of the onlookers. DAN TEXADA Still another Alexandrian who, like the others, once roamed the turtle-backed field of Holton High β this one is a shining example of what a shifty ball- carrier should be like; and his name is Daniel Texodo. He has two more sessions in which to exhibit his grid wares as a spinner, end-sweeper, and pass-flinger. More power to you on the gridiron next year, Dan. JOE HERPIN Here is a tower of power, a 220-pound tackle who bears the nominal brand of Joseph Ovey Herpin. Joe hurled defiance at rival warriors and held his post true to form. Prognosticoters soy, A large, dark man will cross your path β beware of him . This omen is opplicable here, so beware, rivals of S.L.I. β Herpin may be that large, dark man . ELIX DECOUX In high school, Elix oppeored headed for big things, I. e., in the football way, and it looks like collection day is just around the corner. He should improve as he gains experience. We are predicting that, next fall, Elix will begin collecting . Here ' s hoping that he collects two-fold! Page 183 VARSITY FOOTBALL SQUAD The annals of the 1936 football team of Southwestern Louisiana Institute showed more losses than victories but one thing is certain and that is that the battered Bulldog eleven gave its best always and very often against tremendous odds. It Is a sod dismal story when the records are searched to find that what promised to be a highly successful season was marred by the stigma of defeats upon defeats and an abundance of injuries diminished the strength and power of the greatly weakened Bulldog squad. On two occasions did the Bulldogs rise to the zenith of their effective- ness and that was early in the fall when the red and white players defeated Lamar College and Sam Houston of Texas. For next year, however, the chances for a winning club appear extremely bright for with the acquisition of new players and the return of many veterans, the Bulldogs should be very formidable and powerful next season. They were set back the following week, however, when they were defeated by Jennings hligh School. It was in the game against the Borksdole Aviators that the Bullpups really found themselves. They won easily by a score of 38 to 0. Their final game was against the Louisiana State Normal Freshmen whom they tied with a score of 7 to 7. Among the most promising candidates for the 1937 varsity ore: Abel, Aber- crombie, Blanchard, Brumfield, Camp, Cotolino, Kelly, Minner and Tillman. Page 185 VARSITY BASKETBALL Our basketball season turned out to be quite a nightmare. Thrills, close scores, and nerve tingling gomes were plentiful throughout the season, but our team failed to have that necessary something that it takes to win consistently. There were some men who were expected to perform better this season, but somehow they didn ' t ond it meant the difference between winning and losing certain contests. In other games, our men put up a gallant fight throughout, but the opposition was much above them and It was a hopeless tosk. Some of the outstanding features were the consistent aggressive defensive tactics and offensive drives of the sophomores. Diamond Young, Leigh Stewart, and Andrus Martinez. With these men and Aubrey Bacon, who has shown up well In spring training gomes, to form the backbone of our up and coming undefeated freshman team, the outlook is considerably brighter for next season. He gave his best efforts towards making the basketball schedule o success. Mr. Duncan has in basketball, as in all other gomes of life, done his best β effort that was accepted ond appreciated by the team, the coach and the student body. The respect held for him by the team is shown in their having elected Duncan Captain β a position which he ably filled. Dixie Bell. Substitute Forward. Bell, o junior, was not fortunate enough to make the first string, play- ing under a football injury handicap which seemed to affect his game immensely. He was ready, when the time came, to go into the game and fight for Southwestern. What more can we ask of anyone? Woodrow Dixon. Sophomore. Dixon played forward on the team and should have been one of the best forwards on the team. Dixon, a sophomore, showed streaks of ability which makes Southwestern appre- ciate knowing that he has two more years of varsity basketball. Fred Cowart. Forward. Cowart is Mississippi ' s rep- resentative on the Bulldog Quintet. He held down the forward position for Coach Reinhordt ' s Red and White Cogers and proved to be the most consistent goal shooter of the club. Fred is a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and besides being a success on the basketball court, he rates high in his scholas- tic work. Page 187 William Guidry. Senior. He was a substitute center β a center who was willing to get in and fight with determination to do or die. During the last year he fought valiantly for our school. It is such men as this one, that the school regrets losing, though we realize that their sojourn with us is finished. Earl Evans, hie is a sophomore whose caging ability come to light during his freshman year. Evans will be at our college two more sessions, and we appre- ciate knowing that such a player can be depended upon again to take an active part in the caging contests of the two oncoming years. In the first few games he was outstanding, but, due to illness, he lacked the strength the remainder of the season to play college ball. Leslie Gaudet. Senior. The dependability of this forward makes us regret that he is finishing South- western this year. Gaudet was a Bulldog whose bite was frequently felt by the many opponents. A small man making up for his height with determination and speed exemplifies Gaudet. Raoul Landry. Forward. A product of Lafayette who fits the title, local boy makes good , is Raoul Landry. Cow , which is his popular misnomer, is over six feet toll and is probably the most agile man seen on the Bulldog floor for many years. Raoul, as usual, stood out during the basketball season, and, what he lacked in goal shooting, he ably made up by his defense work. Page 188 Andrus Martinez. Sophomore. His outstanding ability as a Guard on our caging team was quickly noticed by Coach Reinhordt. His ability as a player is exceptional, and it will be put to good use during the oncoming seasons. His achievement in basketball ore overshadowed only by his work as a track man. Harry Saucier. Senior Center. Besides being one of the outstanding representative students on our campus, Harry held down the center position on the basketball squad most of the season. He put everything he hod into each game he played. Leigh Stewart. Sophomore Center. Many things can be said about Leigh. He is a true sportsman and a real basketball player. Leigh Is only a sopho- more but managed to earn a first-team berth near the termination of the season. He is a great oll- around eager and is especially adept in the ability to hit the basket. Stewart will be bock for two more years, and he will probably play the center position for the 1937-38 Bulldog aggregation, if he continues to improve and have the aggressiveness that he showed us in the lost three games. Diamond Shine Young. Sophomore Guard. Shine ' s playing received favorable comment dur- ing the season. Young played his part successfully in making the basketball team as much of a success as it was. Southwestern looks forward to his co- operation in making the squad a future success. Aggressiveness and fight mode him the flashy player that he was. Page 189 HAROLD BROCK Brock proved to be one of the pluckiest fighters on the team during the strenuous campaign of the past season. A very effective puncher and a polished boxer, Brock usually entered the ring with deter- mination and usually came out with the decision. He is only a sophomore in college and with added experience, he should be invaluable to the team next year. WILFRED CARSON Moonshine Carson, a senior in Agriculture, hails from Pine Prairie. He was an understudy to the indomitable Carlo Listi, and proved his worth when in the squared ring. EARL CLEMENT Clement wos the safety mon on Coach Mitchell ' s boxing team. He was never co lied upon to fight this season, but he was always reody to do so. He showed good promise this season and is expected to do well next year. Page 190 COOPER DOUCET Wildcaf is the name of this pugilist. He lived up to his record as a champion, having twice won the C.M.T.C. championship of Texas. Doucet, after a slow start, developed into one of the most brilliant and scrappy boxers ever to wear the red and white. He is a junior and has another yeor of collegiate leather-punching. HARVEY GARDINER An Opelousos product β one of the toughest heavy- weights ever to wear the red and white. He likes to mix punches and he can take it and dish it out as well. His task was hard becouse his weight includes some real large scroppers. He is only a Sophomore and in the next two years he will no doubt prove himself invaluable to Coach Mitchell ' s boxing squad. CARLO LISTI The most agile, the cleverest ond the most consistent boxer in Southern intercollegiate boxmg circles is this Patterson boy. Carlo Listl. Twice holder of the S.A.A.U. Championship of the 135-pound class. Listi has participoted in over twenty-three fights and has not as yet been defeated. He was the gentleman that the opponent just couldn ' t hit β but this gentleman always pushed his leather into what turned out to be a jaw-breaker . Page 191 C. C. MATT Here we see a real comer, C. C. Matt. Matt is o well-timed jabber and thoroughly versed in boxing tactics and is one of the most dangerous pugs of the squod. Coach Mitchell was more than pleased with the sensational work of Matt, espec- ially his remorkable development of punching power. DAN MESTAYER Captoin Dan Mestayer is a terrific puncher and hails from the city of boxing champions β New Iberia. An exterminator, a killer β are but a few of the epithets. Captain Mestayer stood out as a boxer and his paralyzing blows still echo and re-echo in the ears of every S.L.I, fistic fan. hlis graduotion will leave a big hole in the setup of the boxing team. DONALD OHLMEYER This glove-swinger proved his worth as o sub to C. A. Doucet and, even though he participated in one bout, he showed up exceptionally well. Being a freshman with one year of experience he should be of value to future S.L.I, boxing teams. Pjoe 192 RALPH WEBER Weber β a Houston, Texas cowboy β lacked speed but possessed a hammer-like jab which left its ill effects on his ring rivals. Weber has another yeor of intercollegiate boxing and will probably be the stand-out man on the Bulldog club. BRUNSON WRIGHT Brunson didn ' t participate in any intercollegiate match, but right along he gained valuoble experi- ence and should rote high next year. ALBERT ZOCK General Zock is what the students call him. He was the showman of the team. He could make a professional show the green tinge of an amoteur. Zock, who beside being a boxer, is an all-around athlete. He graduates this year and will be lost to the Bulldogs next season. HARLAN WILLEY Harlan was a late-comer to Southwestern, but the lack of conditionmg did not interfere with his ring prowess. He is gifted with a great pair of arms and shoulders and sturdy pair of legs which brought him many ring victories and a reputation of being the amateur fighter with the professional technique . He punches with shoulder action behind each mitt, and after he strikes, his opponents know it. Page 193 VARSITY TRACK For the third successive year, Coach Browne ' s track team was crowned the champions of the Third District S.I. A. A. track and field meet. A new record was established at this meet by Cow Landry in the 440-yard dash, the time being 49.2 seconds. This made the eighth S.I. A. A. record now held by a Southwestern athlete. To begin the dual meet competition, the Bulldogs were defeated by a strong L.S.U. team by the score of 89 to 28. The Bulldogs rallied, however, and a few days later defeated the Louisiana Tech track team by a 69 to 43 score. The next competition encountered by the Bulldogs was a triangle meet at Natchitoches with Louisiana State Normal and Stephen F. Austin. The Bulldogs reached their peak in this meet by running up a total of 70 points against Normal ' s score of 42 and Stephen F. Austin ' s score of 28. Page 19 ' t FRESHMAN TRACK The Southwestern Freshman Track Teann made a fair showing at the S.I. A. A. Meet In winning second place. The freshmen defeated Louisiana State Normal Frosh in their only dual meet by the score of 68 to 36. The outstanding yearlings were Adkins, Dixon, Domingue, Martinez, Ridge, Roger and Stirling. These men are expected to fill vacancies in the varsity due to graduation. Page 195 ADKINS Better known as Big Shorty , a consistent 6 feel I inch jumper. The boy who holds the S.I.A.A. record. The little stor who jumps and walks back under the bar. This was Shorty ' s lost year. CRESAP Another of Southwestern ' s smaller stars, who runs both the high and low hurdles far better than the overage. DUCREST Ducrest, a potential star. Duke runs the quarter, half, and mile, and is capable of a fine performance in any one of the three. GRAHAM Although he is not a star track man, Doc has through hard work, shown steady improvement. Page 196 DUNCAN Duncan may be classed a utility man , but In reality is a star performer In several events. He is capable of 24 feet in the broad jump, 47 feet in the hop-step-and-jump, and 10 seconds flat in the hun- dred yard dash. J. Y. holds several intercollegiate records. JACKSON This was Jack ' s first year of varsity track, but he will be depended on in the future to fill the shoes of the departed stars. A very capable performonce is expected of him. JOHNSTON Joe, as alternate captain, has established a record of a competitive spirit. One of Joe ' s most imposing wins was the 4.28.2 mile, a new record made in the S.I. A. A. meet. Joe also has ambitions to break the S.I. A. A. 880 mark. He is a star performer in the mile and half-mile events. Page 197 LANDRY Captain-elect Landry is another of Lafayette High School ' s stars. A member of several record relay teams, Landry is also holder of the S.I. A. A. record in the quarter mile at 49.2 seconds. Can run anything he is called on to do. LeBLANC Sid of Abbeville fame is o crack miier and half- miler. A fellow who runs several roces and winds up the day by running the two-mile. Sid will be here one more year. LORIO Bud , winner of the javelin In the S.I. A. A. last year. A man who consistently threw 185 feet after recov- ering from a setback of flu. Page 198 ORILLION Captain Toby , the boy who mode most of the total points, a hard worker, who started fronn the bottom up and lived the sport he loved. Holder ot several relay records. A fifty flat quarter-miler and has been credited with twenty-four flat in th ' 3 low hurdles. TOUCHTON Touchton, a hard worker with an unbreakable spirit. J. W. spends his time throwing the discus and shot . Next year we expect great things of him. ZOCK Albert Zock, the man who has endurance personi- fied. Zock runs on what he has below the belt, and has always come through when called upon. Zock is still undefeated in S.I. A. A. competition.
