Browne WITH an almost complete change in the coaching staff, Coach Browne has become the oldest remaining mentor of the Institute ' s coaching staff. This year he resumes his charge of the S. L. I. track men, with another fine season in prospect. Since he came to Southwestern from De- Ridder High School in 1923, he has turned out track teams and individual track men who have gone far in an athletic way. During his nine years here never have one of his teams been defeated by a school of their own class, and always rate right close to the top in S. I. A. A. conference circles. Coach T. F. Wii.banks Coach Wilbanks became head varsity football coach this part year with the resignation of T. R. Mobley. Wilbanks comes to us from the upstate Homer High School, where for many years his teams have been among the best in their class. Now at Southwestern, Coach Wilbanks is intent on main- taining the standard of winning teams he puts out, and under him the S. L. I. grid future is very bright. Reinhardt, varsity basketball coach, has proven a very efficient assistant football coach by the fine record and reputation the Freshmen made, under his coaching during the past season. Coach J. C. Reinhardt A graduate ot the University of Iowa in 1931, Reinhardt accepted as his first coaching assignment that of head varsity basketball coach at Southwestern, succeeding Pickell, coach tor the past three years, . n .All-.American forward at Iowa, Reinhardt has already developed several fine individual performers and will undoubtedly have annexed another S. I. A. A. championship before long. Coach Reinhardt also has charge of Physical P.ducation classes. Morgan Rodemacher, former S. L. I. man, was this year appointed assistant Freshman coach to Reinhardt, a very valuable addition to our coach- ing staff. The season was opened with a home game on October 3 against Southeastern College ot Hammond. Both the Bulldog backfield and line were outweighed several pounds to the man and though fighting against overwhelming odds, so grim and determined was their defensive that Southeastern was for- tunate to earn a 6-6 tie. After the Southeastern contest the lack of reserve strength began to take its toll for the scoring and defensive power of the Bulldogs ' offense and defense and the team went into a series of hard games weakened by injuries and lack of reserve power. The result was the same in each succeeding game. Bernard Bailey Fertitta Crowder Lew but inevitable. For a half or better the opposition faced a defense that was nothing less than impreg- nable, and were kept hustling on the defense by a fast, clever, hard-digging Bulldog backfield. Then somewhere along about the half or the third quarter when fresh men were needed to carry on, the necessary replacements were lacking, and the opposition then forged ahead. The next game was also played on the home field, against the powerful Marshall College Texans. The boys from Texas found it necessary to take to the air to do most of their gaining, and a baffling aerial attack managed to land them ahead with a four-touchdown margin, and the Bulldogs held scoreless. The score was 25-0. The next week found the Bulldogs in Ruston to engage the rival upstate Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech. The score of this game, 38-0, betrays the kind of game it was entirely. As far as actual play and ground 1 Pennington Perrin Renfrow Hagan Landrv football goes, it was all even, but a perfected passing system ot the Tech boys scored for them time and again, or placed them within easy scoring distance, and the upstate Bulldogs had added another victory to its list. Following the Tech contest came the game that was considered the toughest on the schedule, that with Springhill College ot Mobile. Springhill had met some of the best teams in the S. I. C, including Tulane, the Champions, and had made a creditable showing ineverygame. For almost a halt they were held scoreless by the Bulldogs, then forged ahead of a crippled team. The best they could do even at that was to maintain a tour-touchdown margin. The next game was played on Homecoming Day , and was ' ballyhooed ' to a tense point. Those who wanted the Bulldogs to make Homecoming real by beating Louisiana College had the satis- Moss Robertson Chaiviere Williams Fori faction of witnessing a very real homecoming. In a hard-tought game the Bulldogs triumphed -6. The next contest was in Clinton, Mississippi, against the powerful Mississippi College squad, and though both line and backfield fought hard, the final whistle found them o erwhelmed 54-0. Then tor the second time this season, the Bulldogs were hosts to a Texas team. This time it was Lon Morris College. Before the game was two minutes old the Bulldogs had scored and made good the extra point, . n amazed Lon Morris team fought back for three quarters, in vain. However, in the latter part ot the last quarter, the visitors passed their way to two touchdowns, making good two ot the three attempts at extra point. In the final game of the season with their old arch-rivals, Louisiana Normal, at Natchitoches, the Bulldogs were defeated 38-2. The first two games proved easy though they were with two powerful high school teams, Morgan City and Abbeville. Both were defeated by a four-touchdown margin. Then the Bullpups conclusively proved their ability in a game with the Louisiana College Freshmen, from which they emerged victors 34-0. A powerful Fort Crockett team next bowed to the Bullpups, 46-6. Then in a game played on a wet field and with uncertain footing, the Bullpups dropped their final game 6-8 to the Louisiana Normal Freshmen. CAPTAIN and mainsta)- of the team, Boyd Faulk, Bulldog guard for the past three years, this year pla cd his last game of ball for S. L. I., being lost to graduation. Always level-headed, Faulk made a fine team leader and his departure will leave vacant a position hard to fill both in view of actual play and clean, fine, sportsmanship. Pennington Though only playing his second year of varsity basketball, this sharp-shooting Bulldog player hit his stride and came flying through another season as high-point man in most of the games played. The tall and rangy Bulldog center is eligible tor another year ot varsity play and with the anticipated return of several others a great team is in prospect. Perrin It is a well-understood tact that Luther Perrin, flashy treshman of 1930-31, and .All-state forward in 1930, would be one of the men chosen to fill the vacancies left in the Bulldog offensive by the grad- uation of Rodemacher and Bordelon. The way in which he has filled the position is phenomenal. Fast, clever, a master of deception and an accurate shooter. Bulldog followers are mighty glad that he still has two years of varsity competition before him. Lew Levy was one of the two men chosen to fill the big gap left by the loss of Claude Hamic. A very experienced and shifty guard, he worked in very well with Captain Faulk. Levy is eligible for one more year, before graduation. Fertitta Naquin SONNIER Crowder Fertitta THIS colorful, well-built boy up from the Freshman ranks was the other man chosen to mainly fill one ot the vacancies at forward. Fertitta, though relatively inexperienced, proved his full worth conclusively in several games throughout the season. With the added experience and con- tinued improvement, he and Perrin should form a mighty sweet pair ot forwards next season. Naquin Naquin is the other guard who helped cover the vacancy there. Really a fine steady player, he saw little action until near the middle of the season, when in the Louisiana State game his play earned for him a permanent position. He saw action in every succeeding game, and will be out next year to con- tinue and improve his play. Sonnier Experienced and a fair forward, Sonnier proved a very valuable man early in the season, and received the call to begin alm ost every game, and did creditably well each time. Throughout the season he proved to be a fine man, alternating at either guard or forward. Crowder A senior, Crowder has consistently played good ball, and carried about him a sense of reliability and dependence which aided much in fostering team work. A good, hard, consistent worker, Crowder played mostly in the capacity ot substitute center to Pennington. A. District Meet: Loyola University, first 49 Southwestern, second 37} Track 1931 THE 1931 track season was a highly successful one for S. L. I. spikemen. En- gaging in four dual meets, the Bulldogs split the bill, winning two and dropping two by close scores. In the S. I. A. A. district meet held in Alexandria the S. L. I. team amassed 37 points to easily clinch second place, first going to Loyola of New Orleans with 49 points. At the Southwestern Relay Carnival this year, some ot the finest track and field men in the South were present, and S. fc. I. placed third. Team honors were carried off by L. S. I ' ., with Tulane and Loyola second. Bulldog spikemen duplicated their overwhelming victory of last year by again defeating Louisiana College, the score this year being 85-27. Louisiana Normal went down to another defeat before the Bulldogs in a close and interesting meet to the tune of 66-46. Then came the meet that was the thrill of the season, that with Louisiana Tech. The two Bulldog teams met on the Southwestern track, and from the start the scoring split evenly, and remained so until the final tally found Tech the winner 60-57. This marked the first defeat that a Southwestern team has ever suffered in track to a college of its size. Loyola, winner of the District S. L A. A. triumphed over the Bulldogs in a dual meet, with one of the strongest dual meet teams in the country. Loyola ' s ace, and Olympic hope. Emmet Toppino, won the sprints for the New Orleans boys. Bulldog spikemen this year were captained by Otto Broussard, popular little broad jumper. Injuries throughout the season kept him from reaching his top performance, but he was valuable, nevertheless, in both individual point garner- ing and incentive to the team. .Aubrey Hawkins, Alternate Captain, was the outstanding individual performer throughout. Hawkins showed well in both low and high hurdles, and on the field in the high jump and pole vault. Other men lost to graduation were: Claude Hamic, Romain Picard, P. W. Bordelon, and Dan BuUiard.
