Every third Friday is a very special day at Southwest. Just at the end of fifth period a member of the Arrow staff brings the coveted Arrows into all of the classes to the delight of everyone. However, a big sigh can be heard in room 414. for another Arrow has been successfully turned out to the relief of the staff. Room 414 is a very interesting place, for besides having the materials and people necessary to plan a newspaper, it has many items rarely found in newspaper planning rooms. For instance, the first thing you notice when walking into the room is the assemblage of calendars on the walls. These are to remind the staff of the many deadlines they have to meet. Another item of interest is the tapestry—very lovely, but actually there to cover up the dirt on the wall! An unusually small staff hasn't stopped this year's editors Paula Kwald. Sue Wilson. Kay Umhocfer, George Fisher, and the rest, from publishing a first-rate paper fourteen times this year. Congratulations to Advisor Mrs. Zittlcman and to the Arrow Staff of ‘54 for their fine job! I lie stair members have managed to reach their “office” without incident throughout the year. There, in the little dressing room just off the stage, was done all tin-work on the annual: lay-out planning, picture mounting, and copy writing. In addition to the work of producing the Ixtok, the staff sponsored a dance and sold Homecoming buttons and l ookcovers to expand its limited budget. The staff would like to take this opportunity to express their appreciation to their advisor. Mis Nelson; and to thank Mr. Segal and Mrs. Robertson of the Bureau of Engraving, Mr. Carlson of the bund Press, and the Lundgrcn Studio for their services. ANNUAL EDITORS 1 Color Valll. We can again Ik very proud of our Southwest Hi-Y as they once more completed an active, exciting and successful year. They have truly practiced and carried out the motto of Ili-Y, which is to create and maintain a high standard of Christian living throughout the school and the community. By doing so they have learned to uphold clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living. Ili-Y advisors and presidents are not to Ik forgotten either, for they have certainly helped the hoys to maintain a lot of initiative and a big interest in the services provided by Hi-Y. The advisors for this year were Mr. Warner and Mr. Pearson, and the presidents were Wayne VanderVort and George Fisher. Some of the highlights of their very eventful season were: selling Christmas trees at the Y's men's lot, sponsoring the annual Hi-Y dance, and helping with the March of Dimes drive. This year the most iiii|x rtant single activity of the Student Council was the starting of a long range student government program. Under the very able leadership of advisor Mr. llaaheim, President Bob Christianson, and Vice President Ann Sullivan, we have already successfully climbed the first rung of the student government ladder. A governing body has been established in the lunchroom, and the council hopes to add to the movement very soon by having students run the study halls. Besides student government, the council actively participated in several other activities such as sponsoring dances, supporting the Community Youth Center, participating in the West-Southwest Youth Conference, organizing a United Nations Day Program, and participating in the City and State Student Councils. Under the guidance of Mr. Ilaaheim and with the help and interest of the student laxly, we predict a very promising future for the Southwest Student Council. The members have had a very enjoyable season taking part in such activities as hay rides, picnics, overnights, and having fun in general. In order to raise money, some of the clubs spon- sored bake sales. These were all quite successful. The girls were divided into eight chapters as they were last year, partly because of the large enrollment. and partly because they thought that they could accomplish more, and have a more satisfactory club if they worked in small groups. By thus working together these girls have learned how to cooperate with each other. Jl MOK CLUB 11 HOW l: Jackie Alrher. Sally Goodman. Mania Willlnimton. Barbara Kllrnc, Addle Dowldnt. Being a letter-winner at Southwest isn’t just an honor—it includes the res|x nsibility of helping the student body realize the importance of athletics. This is done through the “S’ Club, an organization composed of all letter-winners. Each fall and spring a banquet brings them together as a unit. At the fall banquet Babe I a Voir was the highlight speaker. Thanks to these boys, athletics play an im| or-tant part in school life. “Who will receive the coveted S ?” is a question |KTpctdaily facing the Athletic Board. The Purple and White beat its age-old rival 12-6. After Bader powered over for a touchdown in the second quarter, the team, fired up by a spectacular punt blocked by Larry Brown, got their winning touchdown on a pass from John Newkirk to Mel Andrews. Special mention should be made of Co-Captains John Newkirk and Boh Christenson for their excellent leadership, and to Ed Bader for his brilliant running. Next year’s team will include such men of experience as Captain Al Sehmucher, Dave Myers, and Merv Meredith. This season the Indians had a new coach in Bo!) And with ware and whirlwind wrestle! We know what Master laid thy keel. What Workmen wrought thy ribs of steel. Who made each mast, and sail, and rope. What anvils rang, what hammers beat. In what a forge and what a heat Were shaped the anchors of thy hope! In spite of rock and tempest's roar. In spite of false lights on the shore. Sail on. nor fear to breast the sea! Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee. Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears. Our faith triumphant o'er our fears. Are all with thee,—are all with thee!
