Cross Country This tine group ot athletes, coached by Al Halley, are a terrific team, and the school certainly can be very proud of them. This year the harriers won all ot the five dual meets which they entered; swept to first place in the triangular meets; copped top honors in the city meet for the fifth straight year; and finished a close second to Duluth Central in the state contest. Football Under the able guidance of coach |erry Sullivan, an undermanned Southwest tootball team completed a comparatively successful season. In the .season ' s opener, the Indians felt the weight of superior numbers and were downed by a strong West eleven 25-7. The second contest found title-sharing Edison eking out a slim 21-14 victory. After absorbing their seco nd loss, the Indians appeared to go downhill, and were shellacked by Roosevelt ' s fighting Co-Champs 26-7. Traveling to Henrv in the tourth game, the redmen showed more spirit, hut again were put down 14-7. Inspired by the homecoming festivities, Southwest scored its first victory of the season against Washburn 13-12. In a non-conference game, the Indians continued their winning streak by downing Blue Earth 32-0. Returning to conference play, the fighting eleven upset a favored Marshall team 20-12. The string was severed by a strong Central Team 33-14 in the last game of the season. Congratulations were sent to stalwart center, Irv Cornwell, for his placement on the . ll-citv team; to Bob . rne for his four touchdowns at 151ue Earth; to Harrv Santrizos tor his all-around play and brilliant leadership on the field; to Fred Hanson for a remarkable place kicking record; and to the sophomore sensation, Paul Eddy. Bovvers lost the first meet in which he swam by only .2 of a second. Leatherman was a winner in every dual meet all season. Without any veterans in the breast stroke the mermen still managed to put up quite a fight in every meet. They lost to city champions Roosevelt by only seven points in a dis- puted decision. Coach Rudy Pedersen says that the prospects for next year do not look any better with the material which is returning from this year ' s team. They were expected to make a respect- able showing which they did by finishing in the first division. Alter losing the opener to Roosevelt by the heart- breaking score of 3-2, the Indians came back to defeat ' ocational and Washburn by the scores of 9-0 and 6-1 respec- tively. The Redmen then lost to Central -1-1, defeated Marshall 4-0, tied West i-i, and were defeated by South 7-3. Coach Evan Haaheim ' s boys closed out the season by defeating Henry 3-0 and Edison 4-0. Traveling to Albert Lea in the opener, the Indians were downed in a well played game 49-41. Other pre-season games found the purple and white five at Blake and Owatonna, winning both. Opening its conference play, the Indians dropped the first four games to North 40-38, to Washburn 33-27, to City Champions Vocational 34-27, and to Central 62-58 in an overtime game. West found the Indians a little tougher and were scalped 54-35. In a double overtime game Edison topped the Adam boys 46-44 in a real heartbreaker. The next week the team let dov ii and lost to Marshall 49-36, but bounced back and trounced Roosevelt in one of the best games 53-40. South and Henry both fell to the Indians in the last two contests by 39-36 and 38-37. After downing West 49-36 in the sub- district play-off, the six stalwarts were defeated in district 17 play-ofi by Vocational. Notable projects to their credit are: successful money raising campaigns for their Aid to Finland drive, their fine job in the second Annual Youth Leadership Conference, and their outstanding support of the Annuals for Europe project sponsored by the All-City Student Council, of which Southwest is an active member. The Student Council is known throughout the State for the active part it takes in its school government. Besides the many worth-while functions sponsored by the Council, there are also many social activities in which the Student Council takes an active part. During this past year, Southwest students have seen their Student Council put on such dances as the Annual Valentine Dance, the Sock Hop, which is something new, and many other successful dances and open houses. Our Student Council has aimed to promote better relations between the students and their teachers and also to bring to the attention of the surrounding community the fact that student democracy and student participation in school government can be and is successful. The Ethics committee acts as a counselling body for students who violate school rules. It is set up by the Student Council and is composed of two seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. Those who appear before the committee for various reasons are asked to cooperate in obeying school rules. Their offenses are recorded in the office. No Place to Pork In a three-act comedy by William Davidson. Holly McC ormick, a pert teenager, tries to rent an apartment from young, good-looking . ndrcvv McPherson. Complications in all forms and sizes arrive to rush pel-mel through this hilarious play. Holly ' s tag-end family include her brother Orvie, a star at basketball; her be-bop doing sister, Scotty; and Beanie, the cute litde guinea pig enthusiast. All this invades the antique premises of Andy ' s aunt. Miss McPherson. Meanwhile Alveretta, Miss McPherson ' s secretary, and Mr. Underwood.
