Summer came to an end and the doors of learning again stood open to the old and new students of Southwest. Fall, winter, spring -time passed all too quickly from '61 into '62. The world observed American astro- nauts launch three separate flights into space, one of which was the first orbital flight. In November, Kansas Citians and world-wide visitors participated in the rededication of the Liberty Memorial To the cause of under- standing and friendship among all the world's people. Bouffant hair styles for girls, crewcuts for boys, and the twist for young and old alike comprised social fads. Meanwhile, Southwest students strove to better themselves in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Twelve seniors be- came National Merit Scholarship finalists. The highest grade point average ever achieved at Southwest of 4.875 was the re- sult of advanced placement courses begun four years ago. As state president, South- west hosted the Missouri Association of Stu- dent Councils Convention in March. A city- wide honor, Southwest was privileged to have the Mayor of the student City Hall day.
