Football took a new turn for Southside this
year. After only winning one game in the
last two years, Southside, under a new mentor,
Ted Casey, won three and lost five games.
The starting eleven was composed of nine
Seniors and two Juniors.
Coach Casey will have to find replacements
for Bud McLaughlin lendl, Earl Stanton
lendl, Bill Cassada ftacklel, John Hale
ltacklel, Bob Hancock fguardl, Art Smith
lcenterl. ln the backfield they will be los-
ing Jerry May fhalfbackl, Jim Dubois fhalf-
backj, and Gary Sowers fquarterbackl.
Southside will be putting all its hopes
next year on ten returnees. Among these
are Ed Michaels, who was voted a member
of the All Southern Tier Conference and also
a member of the Third Team All State.
The Little Hornets under the able coaching
of Charlie Andrews and Bill Dalrymple made
a good showing with 2-2-1 record. The squad,
made up of mostly Freshmen and Sopho-
mores, worked hard.
The experience they learn will help when
these players are put on the varsity next year.

Southside had its best year in basketball since
the two Elmira High Schools split up to form two
teams in 1946. Under the Hornets' new Coach
Bill Dalrymple, Southside won 9 and lost 7, win-
ning the Western Division, Southern Tier Con-
ference. The Southside team is the only one in the
history of the school to hold two victories over the
intra-city rivals, Elmira Free Academy.
Southside met Binghamton Central March 5
for the Southern Tier Crown. The Hornets lost
this game 53-72
Coach Dalrymple will lose seven men from his
eleven man team by graduation.
The Southside J. V. also made history this
year by having the best J. V. record of any pre-
vious team. Coach Schwalb's team with a 14-2
record took the Western Division Crown along
with her big brothers.
The Hornets met Binghamton North March 5
for the Southern Tier Conference Championship.
The Little Hornets were more fortunate than
their big brothers by winning the J. V. Champion-
ship, beating Binghamton North 60-40.
