Such was the case in the recent passing of a very beloved friend- Cliiford F. McNaught. While he was with us, we took him for granted. He was there when we wanted him, he was there when we didn't want him. I shall never forget how shocked everyone was on hearing that our principal had died. It was about ten-thirty on the evening of June thirtieth. Several of the kids from school were a.t my house. We were all in a very pleasant mood, not even dreaming of such an unhappy experience as death. Then came the two phone calls: first, the parent, then, the teacher. It was hard to believe, it was hard to understand, it was hard to react. Most of the girls were silent, the fellows being the ones who spoke. However, the most any of them said was, Gee, he sure was a swell guy. It didn't seem possible, but it was true. Mr. McNaught was gone. He was gone, but his spirit was still there with us. We started recalling all the little experiences we had shared with him. Some remembered him as the man they had feared most in their high school years. Some remembered him as a big man, able to do anything possible. However, most of us remembered Mr. McNaught as the one person who believed in each and every one of us, the person who shared his parental love with us, the person who wanted all of us to succeed. We remembered how he used to sit in his oiiice, gazing upon a long line of criminals who had come for their sentences. We remembered how he used to greet us in the hall with a smile, or if he was troubled, with a slight frown. We remembered how his eyes always twinkled, especially during class day assemblies, those eyes that seemed to say with pride, They're mine. They're all mine. We remembered the last Senior Day as- sembly and how his eyes had filled with tears as the graduating class sang their last good-byes. We realized that all too soon, our own class would be saying good-bye, that it would be so sad, and that it would be so empty, for-after all-he wouldn't be there. P 4 Wallace J. Howell, M. A. Principal iq, Q ,ggffi 'F PBR IHANKYUQ1 Director The man behind the smooth running mecha- nism of Southside's curriculum is Wallace J. Howell. Formerly principal of George M. Diven School, Mr. Howell began his work at South- side this year upon the death of the well loved Clifford F. McNaught. Already with his help- ing hand and willing smile, Mr. Howell has en- deared himself to the faculty and students of Southside High School. Being principal of a high school the size of Southside is no easy job. Besides supervising the regular business of each school day, Mr. Howell's duties entail advising pupils and teachers, filling out various college recommendation blanks, and attending teacher's meetings and P. T. A. sessions. Despite the many duties which he must carry through, Mr. Howell still finds time to make acquaintance with the pupils both individually and in groups. We are indeed fortunate in having so conscien- tious and able a man as Mr. Howell for our principal. George Abbott S. Carolyn Austin,.B. S. The building seems so big compared to grade school, the seniors seem so grown up. and we who were respected and admired in grammar school are now reduced to mere freshmen. However. we rally quickly. welcome the advice and organization of Mrs. Bogart and Mr. Stottle. our advisers. and elect Paul 0'Leary. Dick Remington. Georgina Cunningham. Thomas Danaher, and Yvonne Neiley as our class officers. We give our first dance in October, pre- sent Sir Felix Korim. the magician, in November. a circus in February, and really make a place for ourselves in S. H. S. annals on March 17, Freshman Day, with our freshman assembly. By June we have passed our initiation in high school with flying colors and are eagerly anticipating Act II of our high school careers. September, 1950-The curtain rises on Act ll and we are now sophomores. My, it is nice to get back to the now-familiar halls. Mrs. Bogart has become Mrs. Lund since last year. and she and Mr. Stottle Toot. Toot, Tootsie are again ready to direct us through this act. We elect Paul 0,Leary as our president again. aided by Dick Bemington, Georgina Cunningham, Ronald Burke. and Carol Anne Brink. This is a rather quiet year for us although we do have several bang-up dances. The most excit- ing event of the year, however, is Sophomore Day when we blossom forth in yellow and white and give the school a look at some won- derful talent. ln June we present the annual Yearbook Dance and can hardly wait to be juniors. And so the curtain descends on Act ll only to open on .... September, 1951-Act lll-The scene is once again Southside High School, and we are now upperclassmen at last! Scplmriber. 1952- Act IV-We are Seniors. This is the time we've been awaiting: for three years. And now everything we do is tinged with a little sad- ness. because our principal. Mr. McNaught. died during the summer. because this is our last year. and hecause the carefree days are almost over. But it is exciting to he seniors and under Mr. Wallace I. Howell. our new director. we move forward and elect John Connelly as Student Council president. Al Mc- Cann as senior president. and Dave Letson. Fiilleen Kuster. Ronald Burke. and Carol Anne Brink as the other class officers. We start off the year with Father of the Bride. our wonderful Senior Play. present a Valentine Dance in Feb- ruary. the Senior Carnival in March. and in June. the hanquet. prom. and of course. the lritter-sweet sadness of Senior Day. Now it is almost time to leave the halls of Southside. Wye all have many cherished memories of our years here and we hope the new senior classes will have as much fun. as much work. as many dreams-come-true as we have had in these. our four years at Southside-and. so. with this wish. Each homeroom elects one representative and through this representative every Southsider has a chance to voice his opinion. This yearls council under the leadership of its president, John Connelly has effected many accomplishments. Among its projects have been: presentation of the Spring Hope Show, sponsor- ship of the Red Cross, distribution of monthly calendars, participation in noon activities. and installation of a phone booth. Advisors of the Board of Directors are S. Carolyn Austin and Wallace J. Howell, principal. Through the ef- forts of this group, our school has grown to be a better place in which to work. Organizations such as the Student Council help to promote better relations between the stu- dents and the faculty. 52 212 A Lattlmer-011 59 E 'HGH Q Q . N Y 0 D Q V Cl 4 'Vina uf- ' lighters, P. VOLLEY BALL Yolleyball is rapidly becoming one of the top sports on a girlls list since it has increased in popularity in the last few years. Fight teams battled for the title through a good season of eight weeks this year. For the first time. competition between different schools was offered. Volleyball was not confined to ninth period intramurals. but enjoyed during the lunch hour as well. TUMBLI G Between gymnasium classes and C. A. Outstanding this year was a tumbling clinic which invited other sehools for a demonstration of stunts, apparatus work, and exercises. 7 Clockwise from Center Top: B. Rusin, K. Fow- ler, M. Athey, D.
