l . 455 'J ST: 'L SPURT5 M j SHUHT5 Miss Cleveland, Miss Ritter ' The athletic ambitions of Southside girls are centered around the Cheerleaders, the Cheerleaders Club, and the Girls Athletic Association. These girls are those who, like the boys in competitive sports, enjoy using their athletic skills for the honor of the school as well as for their own enjoyment. Under the leadership of Miss Judy Ritter, the Cheerleaders Club, as well as the Cheerleaders, came through a highly successful season. The sale of pillows, pennants, and hats by these girls fostered school spirit by adding a touch of comfort and a spot of green to the various sport events. Their "Vic" dances after the home basket- ball games were thoroughly enjoyed by the enthusiastic rooters. At basketball and football games the girls in green and white--SHS Varsity and JV Cheerleaders-spurred the boys to victory and sparked the enthusiasm of the crowds by their cheers and formations. To close the football season the varsity squad gave a dinner and dance in honor of the victorious Hornets. On the other hand the Girls Athletic Association consists of the girls of Southside High School who are interested in becoming better players in sports activities. Through this association we try to develop co-operative qualities in each girl. We want her to be a good loser as well as a good winner, to work as a team, and to react properly to a referee's decision. Basketball, volleyball, softball, badminton, and tennis are our major sports, plus a number of minor sports such as ping-pong, bowling, and tumbling. The girls who participate in the five major sports compete for a trophy. This year's Senior team, in its Junior year, won this trophy for all major sports. An All-Star Volleyball Team was selected by Miss Cleveland to go to Ithaca High School December 2, 1950. The girls who represented Southside were P. Reese, M. Coughlin, I. Backes, A. M. Robertson, S. Blossom, I. Marvin, M. Stickler, M. L. Job, and M. Mosher. Thirteen cities were represented and by a process of elimination SHS made the finals, only to come out the loser to Ithaca. We are proud that Southside High girls made the finals and that they had a good time and were a credit to their school. To raise funds to carry on its activities, the Association sold pencils and pillows and also had noon dances. Part of the money was spent to purchase for its record player an amplifier to be used in the physical education classes at Southside. This year has been a successful one for the entire girls' athletic department and we hope there are many more like it. '13 C , J! 6' Q isa 4 cacgii L 1 ff- -1 J' 84-
