The Humane Club of Southside High was founded in 1943 by
Mrs. Ralph Austin. Its purpose is to interest the students in the ac-
tivities of the city, state, and national humane societies. Students
from any year of high school are eligible for membership.
Regular meetings of the Humane Club have been held every other
Thursday. On alternate Thursdays in the auditorium the club showed
noon movies open to all students. The annual party was held on the
evening of January 24-. At another time there was a round-table dis-
cussion of the laws of New York State pertaining to the humane
treatment of animals. In April the members assisted the local Humane
Society by filling the envelopes for that groupis annual membership
campaign. This spring the club had a picnic and meeting at the
Humane Societyis animal shelter on the Lowman Road.
On May 11, the Humane Club's annual assembly featured a
movie and the presentation of awards to the elementary and high
school students who had submitted the best posters in the Animal
Poster Contest conducted by the club during National Humane
Week, May 6 through 13.
