The gym was transformed into a place of beauty. The walls and the ceilings were artistically decorated with a network of blue and gold crepe paper, while baskets of Howers, here and there, added to the effect. An excellent orches- tra furnished music for the dancing. The delicate spring shades of dresses Worn by the girls seemed to complete the picture. Although it was the Senior Prom of the Class of 1926, it seemed a veritable Fairyland. In passing, we wish to recommend that the faculty abolish odious quizzes, tiresome classes, tardy bells, and the miscellaneous other small nuisances that are a source of such annoyance to the student body. . -B. BLUE AND WHITE ANNUAL STUDENT COUNCIL President ..... .. Lawrence Hobler Vice-President .. ...... Ralph Enyedy Secretary ..... .. Katherine O'Connox Treasurer .. ......... Arthur Parsons Advisers ............................,....... Mr. Edson, Mrs. Austin The Student Council of the Southside High School this past year carried on the precedents estab- lished by the previous Councils, under the direction of Lawrence Hobler, president, and his able officers and committees. Much credit is due also to Mr. Edson and Mrs. S. C. Austin, who have acted as advisers. The Student Council is the governmental expression of the democracy which permeates all the activities of Southside. Under the direction of the Council, all assemblies have proven successful, educa- tive, and interesting not only to students but to many parents and other visitors. The Council supervised all social activities in the school and should feel proud of the record they have established. The Property Committee under direction of Ralph Enyedy have maintained the fine condition and appearance of our school. THE 'EL-S0-HI Continuing the flne record which was established last year, the EITSO-Hi is nearing the end of its second year as our school newspaper. Since it was discovered towards the beginning of the semester that the majority of the staff mem- bers had not been instructed in newspaper methods, Mary Granger, editor-in-chief, organized a Journalism class which she, herself, taught for two months. This class met every Thursday night and among their achievements was the writing of headlines for the big Christmas number of the El-So-Hi, the first eight- page issue of our paper yet on file. By sending delegates to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's convention held at Columbia University, March 12 and 13, also to the Ithaca convention, held March 26 and 27, the El-So-Hi has surely placed Southside High on the map. As is the custom, eighteen numbers are to be issued each school year. These feature all the news of Southside. VVith Mary Granger, editor-in-chief: VVilliam Crofutt, associate editor: and Mr. Lavigne, business manager, the paper has won a remarkable name among newspapers throughout the various states. This organization which is now composed of about. thirty members, was formed for the purpose of fur- thering good music in our school. From time to time the club has presented free musical programs to the students in an endeavor to familiarize them with the works of the different composers. The ukelele club is an organization sponsored by this society. Under the capable officers, Melopea will go on to bigger things in the future. DRAMATIC CLUB-THE PLAYERS One of the most active clubs of the Southside High School is The Players. Under the direction of Miss Florence Callahan, the officers have carried on the work with much success. Mary Lennon is president of this organization: Winifred French, secretary, Lester McConnell, treas- urer, and Edward Armstrong, sergeant-at-arms. The meetings are held once a month, on Tuesday, at 4 o'clock in Room 210. During this year four plays have been successfully given, The Maid of France in the Christmas assembly, and three short plays after school. The latter were under the direction of the following girls: Olivia Shannon, Florence Kane, and Catherine Conklin. Page 31 -4- BLUE AND WHITE ANNUAL SENATE DEBATING SOCIETY Miss Josephine L. On March 12 the varsity debating team composed of Robert Campbell, Lawrence Hobler, Seymour Partridge and Julian Van Dyke, met Ecclesia in Assembly. The decision was awarded to the Senate. ' Soon after being reorganized last September, we felt the need of new members to replace those who graduated in June. To reach this end we conducted a big membership drive and certainly obtained results. This adair culminated in a lively spread, given by the losers to the winners. ln addition to learning Parliamentary Law we held spirited debates on current questions. This proved helpful in preparation for the varsity try-outs held just before Christmas vacations. Every other VVednesday afternoon, we held ten cent dances ln the gymnasium, which besides increas- ing our iinances, helped create greater interest in our club. One of the most successful of these was the Christmas dance, December 16, a feature of which was the presentation of Santa Clause to the crowd. The next affair to absorb our attention was the Senate-Ecclesia debate which is a precedent for our future years. Nearly every member owns and is proud of the tiny golden lamp of learning, our pin. Our meetings are held every Thursday afternoon in Room 201. GIRLS' CHAMBER OF COMMERCE President .........,............. .............. ....... M a rylois Fenton First Vice-President ..... Mr. Pierson Salmon, of the Second National Bank, in his interesting and instructive talk about banking emphasized the many opportunities opened to young women in a bank. Several Wednesday night dances have been held in the gymnasium under the auspices of the club. The club ls to be congratulated on its excellent care of the ferns in the corridors. The charge of the typewrltlng room has been under the direction of the G. C. C. May membership in this worthy club be of benefit to the many girls! S. S. S. has been a lively organization. During the year several after-school dances were given and in order to drive away the afterthoughts of exams, the girls held an After-Regents Dance in the gym on January 23.
