Math relates to reason and life As the subject which most closely in- volves the art of reason, math holds a special place in the educational sys- tem. High school math is important even for those who do not intend to go to college: for math doesn't only teach numbers, equations and formulas, it tea- ches the individual to think and to rea- son for himself. F A The difficult symmetries of geometry pose no problems forthis student. B Mr. Roger Ratliff, math teacher, points out an important fact to his students. C Mrs. Betty Stevens, algebra and geometry tea- cher, contemplates another rewarding session with her math class. l Math nourishes enlightenment -.. ln our changing world of ma- chines and computers, math plays an increasingly more important role in the future. To help prepare the student for his future, whether in a highly trained occupation or for budgeting the basics of his life, Southport offers various math courses. The basics of learning and understanding are as important in the preliminary math courses as in the advanced, A. Mr. Hugh Dowell, math teacher, en- thusiastically relates a problem to his class. B Mr. Mike Lemon, algebra teacher, searches for the right words to explain 2 solution. C Bill Flora, junior, contemplates his nexl move on the test. D Sending students up to the board has been a great help in conquering innumer- ablequestions confronting math. E Mr. Robert Kennedy, business matl' teacher. puts the answer to a homework assignment on the board.
