"Hard work, ability,
the desire to win"
was the way Coach Tom
Hathaway described the
"force" which drove the
speeding harriers to an
undefeated season. The
1971 cross-country team
repeated the goal which
the 1970 harriers
set last year, STATE.
Southport came out on
top with the low score of
56 compared to second
place Northwest with a
far distant 129.
Brant Bennett, with
a time of 9:39, placed
fifth in the meet and
was the first of the
harriers to cross the
finish line. Closely
following Bennett was
lack Opsahl with a
finishing time of 9:39.
For nine years, Mr.
Tom Hathaway has been
cross-country coach at
Southport, and has en-
tered a team in the
state meet each of these
nine years. In these
years, Southport has won
two state championships
and has had four teams
placing in the top ten,
Throughout his years of
coaching, Mr. Hathaway's
teams have compiled a
total of 52 wins, only
4 losses, and 1 tie in
dual meets. Out of 12
varsity runners, seven
coached by Mr. Hathaway
have broken the 10 min-
ute goal for the two mile
course set by coaches
throughout the state.
As the season came to a
close with another state
championship, Coach Hath-
away concluded that
"Our cross country team
was the toughest that
Indiana's ever had,'f
and it was.
