K heerleadet s Victory, Victory is our cry! V-l-C-T-O-R-Y ' At the head of the vibrant Red and White spirit were this year ' s yell leaders. Leading yells at the games and pep sessions, organizing the Pep Club, and directing school spirit are duties of our cheerleaders. Members running on the 1961 Cross-country team were first row (I to r); Pat McMurray, Bill Dorris, Lar- ry Dorris, Bob Cameron, Dick Fountain; second row: Coach McDaniel, Bill Troxell, Rick Anderson, John Payne, Larry Norris, Terry Volpp. i Vicyciirxi yVL cV en Coach McDaniel again guided his cross-country team to a fine season. Cross-country is a very exhausting sport in wnich the participants run over a two mile course against time and other contestants. The scoring of cross-country differs from most other sports in that the team with the low score is the victor. Led by junior Par McMurray, who placed first in the South Central Conference Meet, and senior Dick Fountain, who placed fourth in the state, the team captured four dual meets, second in the Washington Invita- tional, second in the Howe Invitational, second in the County Meet, first in the South Central Conference, second in the Sectional, and fifth in the State Meet at South Grove. Southport — w — Blooming ton Southport — w — Tech Southport — w — Broad Ripple Southport — w — Warren Central Washington Invitational — 2nd Howe Invitational — 2nd Shortridge Invitational — 2nd Marion County Meet — 2nd South Central Conference — 1st Sectional — 2nd State — 5th Junior Pat McMurray, who won the South Central Conference in a record time, and Dick Fountain, a four year varsity runner who plac- ed fourth in the state, are shown flashing the form which earned them the place of leading runners on the team.
