We finished the year with more victories than defeats, and gained quite a bit of respect from other teams of the Inter-Lakes Conference. After opening the season with two quick wins, the team slumped badly, winning only one of the next four. Bouncing back the next week, they trounced Bellville, 54 to 13, be- fore dropping the final game to Plymouth. Throughout the campaign, they played rough, hard football, with only 1 out of 15 touchdowns scored by passes. The difficult job of filling holes left by the seniors de- parture will be eased for coach Monte Charles by a fine gang of juniors and sophomores plus an undefeated fresh- man team. We have a brand new gym, seating over 2,000 spectators, and more team spirit than ever before. Above all, we had a deep, seasoned, well balanced bas- ketball squad. It was one teannwhere everyone did his job well. For this reason alone, we are assured a second place finish, while scrapping down to the wire for the Interlakes title itself. Resume Our first varsity baseball seasonhas drawn to aclosewith the jubilant juniors of Southfield bringing home the prize. The new school on Lahser Road is setting tradition quickly as the Jays of Southfield have placed the Interlakes C onfe r e nc e championship baseball trophy in their once barren trophy case. Two victories over Dearborn High School were the only non- conference games in a season which saw Southfield post an all over record of ll'wins against 1 defeat. The highlights of the season saw the Jay's brilliant hurler, Tom McCormick, pitch 9 con- secutive innings of hitless ball in an ll inning duel against Waterford High School. Southfield finally won l-0. The invulnerable McCormick was called on to heave 10 more innings on the following Friday against Berk1ey,winning 3-1. The opponents scoring was kept considerably low by fine fielding and unique hurling. Timely hitting provided the runs when we needed them the most. Southfield placed more than its share on the All Conference team. We were sponsored by Don Bradley, catcher, Jim Simmons, first baseg and Tom McCormick, pitcher. Coach Ed Litogot and the boys will be looking forward to a chance to de- fend their title next year when the complete team will be back. The little sparkplug, Har- vey Bradley, Second Base. Golf The Southfield linksmen dethroned Waterford as Interlakes Conference golf champions as result of the Jay's first year in the league. Southfield went undefeated through their first four meets, bettering the best that Berkley, Waterford, and Fitzgerald High Schools had to offer. Then, they proceeded to turn back the foursomes from the lnterlakes Con- ference schools during the league meet at Franklin Hills Country Club. Southfield came in with a score of 353 and the closest was Berkley with 357.
