LAWRENCE HOBART FLECK, A.M.. C.P.A. Dean of the School of Business Administration Upon the suggestion of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce that a school of business for Dallas be set up by Southern Methodist University, the University founded its School of Commerce in 1920. The school was set up on a two-year basis, with the requirement of two preliminary years of general college worlt. In 1941 the school was set up as a separate unit, the name changed to the School of Business Administra- tion, and the new degree of Bachelor of Business Administration offered. In 1950 the Graduate Division was set up and the Degree of Master of Business Administration authorized. The School is an associate member of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business. It is founded on the principle that in the complenity of today ' s economic system, the apprenticeship system alone does not offer adequate training for business. Business is recognized as a profession, and prospective business- men are given thorough training for their future wort. Education in fundamental principles rather than drill work in technical details is the obiect of ■ nstructlon. The first two years, known as the pre- business administration course, are devoted largely to the basic subjects of the regular arts and sciences course. The last two years ere taken up by the study of technical business courses, for the school believes that a student of business should have a broad general foundation. the school of engineering The School of Engineering was organized in 1925 as the result of cooper- ative effort on the part of the University, the Technical Club of Dallas, and the North Texas chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The original engineering building was a frame structure housing classrooms, offices and laboratories. From that time it continued to grow until in 1948 the Caruth Engineering Building was completed. The new three- story brick building, completely air-conditioned, houses faculty offices, classrooms, drafting room, and several laboratories. Other laboratories and the machine shop are contained in another brick building which was completed in 1947. The School offers complete programs in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The professional degrees Civil Engineer, Electrical Engineer, and Mechanical Engineer are also conferred.
