TH PRE IDE T Dr. Umphrey Lee, president oi the University and recipient of a Ph.D., Litt.D. and LL.D., has gained outstanding prominence as an educator, leader, and triend of the students. Succeeding Dr. Charles Selecman, Dr. Lee became president in 1939. President Lee was graduated from the University of Texas, where he received his Bachelor of Arts. In 19l6 he received his Master oi Arts from SMU, and later his doctorate at Columbia University in 1931. He has been a Methodist clergyman in various churches over the state, including Cisco, Ennis, and the Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas. ln addition, he was Professor of Homiletics in the School ot Theology at SMU, head of the School of Religion at Van- derbilt University and a Drucilla Moore Buttington professor of Church history. SMU has never enjoyed so wide a reputation, nor so glowing a one, as it has attained under the leadership of Dr. Lee. He knows the names of the students as well as it he were running tor presi- dent of the student body still: but he realizes the importance of the friendships which SMU has downtown: and many a prominent Dal- las businessman is proud to call Lee his friend.
