INTRODUCTION The victory has been celebrated, and the peace following the greatest global war the world has ever known is becoming more and more complete. New ideas and modes of living con- tinue in their never-ending search to make man more restful, secure, and happy. Schools and universities all over the nation have received the largest enrollments in their history. Religion, science, and the arts are again becoming the interests of a tired, fanatic world. May God extend to us the patience to stop and realize in the years to come w hat slavery and intolerance have cost us, and may He lead the way to a world brotherhood, which can be, and must be, the only answ er.

This is an Age of Speed. The atom has been harnessed; dis- tance has been reduced to a matter of hours and minutes; designs and influences accentuate speed ... speed. Yet, pause and thought, pause and consideration, pause and recollection still hold the solution to most problems. The Rotunda is a permanent, lasting book. It is something that continues throughout the years as an integral part of this university. For this reason the editors of the 1947 issue have tried to realize the responsibility of creating the finest yearbook possible. Yet the Rotunda is not an organ in which the creators abilities are demonstrated. It is a personal thing. Your book. Without you, the students and faculty, there is no Rotunda. The pages become alive with your pictures and the things you have done, so vivid that years from now you can look at the Rotunda and it will represent Southern Methodist University to you. The purpose of the 1947 Rotunda is to recall to you your part in helping Southern Methodist University extend the feel- ing of brotherhood. May this book offer you an opportunity to pause and recall the University ' s teachings. UFe Editors PAT KENNEDY JERRY CHAMBERLAIN
