Recreational and educational lacilities lor the homeless people were not overlooked in the need lor providing food and shelter. A committee composed ol David l'XAclntosh, R. lvl. Nolen, Lula Roach, Gladys Wlilliams, Vtlendell Nlargrave, Rl. L. Bryant, and C. C. Logan provided nightly programs ol moving pictures, lectures, and music by the choral clubs, orchestra, and band. Bruce Mervvin and Russell lxlolen were in charge ol a system devised to lurnish instruction to children from kindergarten through high school age. Classes vvere held lor the negroes in the Qld Science Building under the supervision ol Madge lroutt, who was assisted by several relugee teachers and college practice teachers. Dilla l-lall, head ol the school lor whites at the Christian Church, was aided by Sina Mott, Lulu Clark, Gro Rogers, Elorence Wells, lina Goodwin, and Mae Eox. Aileen Carpenter and Lulu Roach did special vvork in physical training and art. Although the town and campus schools donated supplies and equipment, shortage ol necessary materials compelled the instructors to stress visual education and project Work. STEIN Zoology lhe Carbondale Branch of the American Association of University Woriien draws its membership largely from faculty women and faculty wives. This organization maintains a loan fund from which S150 is lent each year to a senior woman who meets certain standards of scholarship and personality. When over a thousand refugees from flood striclcen Ohio River towns poured into Carbondale on January 25, an emergency arose which enlisted the aid of faculty and students alike. Cooperating with the Red Cross Committee in the town, President Pulliam, who headed the relief worl4 on the campus, soon had faculty and student committees efficientlycaring for the seven hundred people who were housed in college buildings. Williain McAndrew, l. W. Abbott, and Frances Etheridge had charge of the white refugees in the New Gymnasium, and l lenry Schroeder, Charles Neely, jr., and Aileen Carpenter supervised the negro refugees in the Old Gymnasium, A temporary laitchen was erected on the south end of the Main Building, and meals were served on long tables placed in the south corridors.
