QGDEN Commerce CHARLES PARDEE I'Iistory The I-lame Economics Department has assumed all responsibility lor the costuming ol plays presented by the Little Theatre and other campus organizations. Under the supervision ol Mit Petersen ol the Industrial Arts Department the students in the pattern making and laundry classes have constructed a gas Furnace For melting brass and bronze. Miss Florence VVells, English critic in the University High School, has organized a Poetry Club and a Dramatic Club lor her students. Mention should be made ol the two boolcs published by Faculty members this year. Mr. L. C. Peterson is the author of Action Toys, a text designated for use in the home worlcshop and in industrial art classes in the upper grades and junior high schools. Dr. R. D. Bowdens third boolc, Boies Penrose,theSymbaI of an Era,has received extremelyfavorable critical comment. It is a biography ol a political boss of the 'I875-1925 period. This vear the Art Department has extended its services to include the Rural Practice Schools. Miss Lulu Roach supervises the vvorlt ol the student teachers. The department also arranged an exhibition ot Archi- tectural Designs and Murals done by the students in the art classes at the University ol Illinois. The museum has also instituted an exchange service with other museums by means ol which the stall hopes to build up a collection of plants and animals representative ol various types throughout the United States. President Pulliam has placed Bruce Mervvin, Mary Steagall, Kenneth Van Lente, Thomas Barton, Qtis Young, Vtfillard Ciersbacher, lfussell Nolen, William Bailey, and john ivlfright on o Museum Governing Board, which is carrying on an investigation ol the possible source ol' historial objects relating to the history ol Southern lllinois. A number ol interesting and valuable additions to departmental services have been made this year. The Physiology and l-lealth Education Department has inaugurated a complete system ol hospitalization, Among the services rendered to the students have been vaccination -and inoculation lor communicable diseases, complete physical examinations, and checl4s For abnormalities. lhrough a lee system, all students are insured medical care when they are ill. D. Bowden as head. The lull program ol courses otlered has been extremely popular with students. At the end ol April Dr. Bowden took the Rural Sociology class on a lour day trip through the sharecropper section ol Arkansas and the Delta cooperative larming district ol Mississippi, across the old plantation region ol Mississippi and the strip Farm section ol northern Georgia and Alabama, and back through the tobacco region ol Tennessee and Kentucky. The Entertainment Committee headed by Dr. Vlfillis Swartz continued the Fine work which it began in 'l935 in bringing to the campus this year a series ol lamous singers, musicians, and speakers, thus adding materially to the cultural opportunities of the college. Perhaps the most popular ol the programs were those by Cornelia Otis Skinner, John l-layes l-lolmes, ,lulien Bryan, vlohn Mason Brown, and the Barrere Little Symphony. Two organizations which are very active are the American Association ol University Rrolessors and the American Association ol University VVomen. The First, which includes part but not all ol the Faculty, has established an annual scholarshiogivento the mostoutstanding member ol thejuniorclass. This scholarshipwas named the Charles Neely, slr., Memorial Scholarship in honor ol the late Charles Neely, Jr. R. A.
