A number ol interesting and valuable additions to departmental services have been made this year. LENTZ History torium is also available for entertainments and weelcly meetings of organizations and clubs, as well as for larger services to the community. An example of the latter was the Federal Arts Exhibit held there from Febru- ary Q3 to March 7. Fifty paintings by some of the most famous of Americals modern painters were mounted on newly constructed screens under the direction of Burnett Shryoclc. The exhibit officially opened with an address by Gerard Lambert, Head of the Southern Illinois Eederal Arts Project, and a program presented by the college string quartet. Miss Gladys 'Williams and Burnett Shryoclc of the Art Department acted for thelcollege in arranging this exhibition, and Mrs. Clyde Smith headed a committee of townspeople who worlced wit them. After being closed for fifteen years, the College Museum was recently reopened under the custodianship of Mary Goddard and Fred Cagle. Vtfhen the museum was moved to a new location in the Parkinson Labor- atory, the staff made a complete index of all specimens and revised the case displays. QGDEN Commerce CHARLES PARDEE I'Iistory The I-lame Economics Department has assumed all responsibility lor the costuming ol plays presented by the Little Theatre and other campus organizations. Under the supervision ol Mit Petersen ol the Industrial Arts Department the students in the pattern making and laundry classes have constructed a gas Furnace For melting brass and bronze. Miss Florence VVells, English critic in the University High School, has organized a Poetry Club and a Dramatic Club lor her students. Mention should be made ol the two boolcs published by Faculty members this year. Mr. L. C. Peterson is the author of Action Toys, a text designated for use in the home worlcshop and in industrial art classes in the upper grades and junior high schools. Dr. R. D. Bowdens third boolc, Boies Penrose,theSymbaI of an Era,has received extremelyfavorable critical comment. It is a biography ol a political boss of the 'I875-1925 period. This vear the Art Department has extended its services to include the Rural Practice Schools. Miss Lulu Roach supervises the vvorlt ol the student teachers. The department also arranged an exhibition ot Archi- tectural Designs and Murals done by the students in the art classes at the University ol Illinois.
