The most modern types of farm implements were displayed in the Main Building, and the University of lllinois sent an exhibit illustrating the influence of forests in combatting and controlling erosion, the uses of terraces, the development and effects of soil acidity, and soil conservation in orchards. An experiment of particular value to the farmers of Southern lllinois has been initiated on the college farm. Under the direction of the Engineering Department of the College of Agriculture of the University of lllinois, Mr. Muclcelroy and his students have constructed an artificial lalce and a six-acre garden. Here an irrigation project is being developed to demonstrate to the small gardeners ofthe coal fields methods of utilizing hitherto unproductive land for the growing of vegetables for market. for over a year Child Guidance Clinics have been held at regular intervals on the campus under the direction of a clinic staff consisting of a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a social vvorlcer from the lllinois lnstitute for juvenile Research, a division of the State Department of Public Welfare. CRAMER History As a result of an extended investigation of the pre-college training in grammar, composition, and literature ol S. l. S. N. U. Freshmen which vvas conducted last year by members ol the English Department, the High School English Section ol the Southern Division requested at the recent meeting that the English Department Form a permanent organization for improvement of the teaching of English in Southern lllinois and better coordination between the high schools and the college. A committee ol high school and college teachers was immediately appointed, and vvorlc has already begun. Fred Lingle, critic teacher in the Carterville l-ligh School, will represent this newly formed organization at the state meetings for the improvement of English curricula. Teachers are not the only people to whom the college gives its aid. Cn February 'IO-'I3 a Short Course for Farmers was held under the auspices of the Departments of Agriculture and l-lame Economics, cooperating with the College of Agriculture ol the University of lllinois and the Farm Bureaus of the neighboring counties. Wham, Dr. Bruce Nlerwin, Dr. Marie Hinrichs, and Miss Florence Denny. These meetings are open to students who have had or are taking practice teaching, to students vvho have already held teaching positions, and to members of the college and training school laculty, Already the clinics have accomplished much in aiding children who have been unable to adjust themselves to school worlc and life. During the last year and a hall the extensive improvements and repairs on campus buildings made possible by the P. W.A. Federal Worlcs Project have greatly added to the efficiency of many college departments, notably the Wheeler Library and the public spealcing division ol the English Department. The whole second Floor of the library, formerly used lor storage, is novv a reserve boolc section with a separate delivery deslc, two reading rooms, and ci staclc unit used mainly For reserve boolcs. When the Qld Science Building vvas remodelled last fall, a large part ol the second Floor was made into an auditorium. l-lere lVliss Magnus holds her public spealcing and play production classes.
