Since its organization in IQI5, the committee has given proof of its efficiency in supervising student entertainments, being ever on the alert to find some means of making campus life more wholesome and more enjoyable. The signal achievement- of the Social Committee during the school year, 1933-34, was the lifting of an outworn ban against student dances on the campus. The Homecoming Dance of last fall, the first campus dance, which was held in the new Gymnasium, was so successful that it has been followed by many others. hfiss hdary Entsminger is the very capable chairman of the group. The two deans, hffr. George D. Wiliam and Xfiss Lucy K. 'Woody, also are members, as are likewise Coach XYilliam hTcAndrew and Miss Frances Etheridge of the Physical Educa- tion departmentg Bliss hilary Crawford, the Head of Anthony Hallg Dr. Thelma Kelloggg hliss Esther Powerg and Dr. R. At the beginning of the season the Nlaroons were minus the services of W'imberely, who broke his leg playing baseball during the summer. However, after dropping the first game of the season to Nlurray Kentucky Teachers, the hffaroons came back strong and held Southeast Nfissouri Teachers of Cape Girardeau to a score- less tie. In this game Co-Captain Bertoni sustained a knee injury which disabled him for the remainder of the season. Then Wfestern State Teachers of hlacomb were beaten very decisively by the hflaroons in the first football engagement between the two schools. In the annual homecoming game, which was played in a sea of mud, the teachers defeated Shurtleif College 2-o. Signal recognition of Southern was made when hlorawski, captain-elect, was picked by a poll of sports writers and Little Nineteen coaches as tackle on the all-conference team. We re ret that three members of this vear's s uad have been 8 . Cl lost by graduation-Co-captain Davison, Wiggins, and Bricker. Wfimberely transferred'to another school. The hlaroons finishedmthe season with a record of four wins and four defeats and one tie. In conference competition Southern Teachers won four games and lost two, making a percentage of .667. This placed them in eighth place in the standing of the conference, which consists of twenty-one schools. This prophecy was borne out during the first half of the basketball season, and hopes of a championship team were running high. The Southerners had won eleven of the first twelve games played. hffany critics thought that it was one of the best basketball teams ever to represent the school. One conference defeat by Illinois Iliesleyan was all that marred a spotless record. Then came two successive defeats administered by Old Normal and Illinois College. These two defeats spoiled the chances of the Southern cagers of holding first place in the conference standing. At the end of the season the Southerners had played nineteen games, winning fifteen and dropping four. In conference competition the Southerners won eight games and lost three, which placed them in fourth place in the standings of the conference with a percentage of .729. The high lights of the basketball season were victories over St. Louis University and Evansville College. St. Louis Lf had one of the best teams that ever represented that school in intercollegiate competition, and this victory was well deserved by the Southern squad, who played a superb game. In a post-season game Carbondale defeated 28-21 Dekalb Teachers, who were champions of the Little Nineteen for two successive years. Holder, one of the most versatile athletes to grace a Southern squad, was placed on the all-conference team for the second successive year. In the DeKalb game Davison and Bricker, seniors, played their last time for S.I.T.C. Hall was a promising freshmannvho should be able to fill Captain Bricker's shoes next year. The 1933 season was one of the best ever experienced by the local track team from the points piled up against their opponents, and for the second time Carbondale brought a trophy home from the annual Little Nineteen meet at Gales- burg. Last season it was a fourth-place award, but this year the locals captured the second-place cup, first place going to Old Normal. Coach Liugle's track team had twice beaten Old Normal previous to the conference meet-in the btate Teachers College meet and in a dual meet. BOXING CHAMPIONS Each year at S.I.T.C. a boxing and wrestling tournament is held in the spring term, in which the outstanding boxers and wrestlers of the school compete to be champ of their respective classes. In the boxing events John Laney, Welterweight champ, Arlie Ilfolfinbarger, middleweight contender, James O'hflalley, light heavyweight champg and John Knash, heavyweight champ, were unchallenged in their classes and therefore retained their titles for another year. Lavern Tripp, heavyweight, who was a likely contender to Wrest the title from John Knash, received a broken rib in preliminary practice and had to withdraw his name. In order to make a full boxing card John Laney, Welterweight champ, fought Arlie Vlfolfinbarger, unchallenged middleweight, in a three-round no-decision affair. Also james O'NIalley, unchallenged light heavyweight, fought Gorilla Jones in a three-round no-decision battle and knocked him out for the count in the third round. In the wrestling division two former champs retained their title, Deason in the 160-pound class and Nlorawski in the 175-pound class. As with other schools, Southern Illinois Teachers College has some students who have distinguished themselves-whose achievements have done much to command respect and admiration. At the request of the Obelisk stall, the Social Committee, aided by the faculty sponsors of many organizations, selected from each class a man and a woman Who, it seems to them, are most valuable to the college. 'We present in the following pages our important people . Page 237 Page 2 38 Nleet Ralph Thompson, a student of science. Few students have surpassed Ralph Thompson in scholastic and intellectual achievement, his work in the field of Chemistry having been really distinguished. He is a member of Chemeka, an honorary society for Chemistry students, and also of the Chemistry Seminar. Those who know him were not sur- prised to hear that he has complied with the riid require- ments of the Harvard graduate school and will continue his studies there next year. Meet Ruth Nlerz, Editor of the Egyptian. A nose for newsn combined with intelligence and energy account for Ruthls success in college journalism. She has done valuable service on the staff of the Egyptian since her sophomore year, and during the past year her Work as editor has brought the college Weekly up to new heights of excellence. During 1932-33 she was president of Mu Tau Pi, honorary jour- nalistic fraternity. Page 239 Page 240 hleet Lynn Holder, our distinguished athlete. A real athlete is a good advertisement for any school, especially one so widely known and popular with sport fans as Lynn. Many of the victories which S.I.T.C. has enjoyed during the past three years have been due to his prowess. This year he was invaluable in varsity football and basketball, and was chosen as forward on the all-star Little Nineteen team. Meet Frances Noel, reporter and young lady of letters. In fact Frances is the best known literary figure on the campus. Her interviews and news stories in the Egyptian are widely read, and her play, Whitz Rofie, won the Strut and Fret Melodrama Contest. Whitz Rosie is said to have attracted the most hilarious audience of the year. This year Frances has also been Associate Editor ofthe Egyptian. Probably Bill is one of the most versatile people on the campus. ln addition to having a high scholastic record and a real interest in science, he is a creditable athlete in football and wrestling, a member of Chi Delta Chi social fraternity, and an accomplished violinist. The ability and dependability of hflorawski make him really valuable to the college. Meet Barbara Jane Scott, artist. The impressive stage settings which contribute so much to the success of drama- tic presentations are the Work of a group of hardworking stagecraft artists. Barbara Jane Scott is one of these. Her skill and untiring efforts in this work have helped to give college dramatics at S. I. T. C. an almost professional setting. Her clever posters and her Work for the Obelisk are further contributions to the college, for izvhich We express our gratitude. Page 243 Page 244 hleet Robert Boyle, matinee idol. A freshman whose talents as an actor have attracted attention is Robert Boyle. He is especially good in character roles such as his portrayal of David Bliss in Hay Fever, an almost professional perform- ance. lVe shall also remember with pleasure, his work in Alf: Fair and Whz'tf Rorie. Bob also writes feature articles for the Egyptian. Meet Anna Lee Moore, debater. Being elected president ofthe Illinae, the Womer1's debating club, during her freshman year is the rare honor which came to Anna Lee Moore. From her unassuming manner, one would not suspect that she has a a flair for argument, but she hasg and the combination makes her one of the Illinae's most dependable speakers. Anna Lee represented the Illinae in both the debate with Cape Girardeau and the annual meet With the Forum. The annual Homecoming entertainment presented by Strut and Fret, reunions, teas, dinners given by various organizations, a stunt parade to the football field, and a spirited game with Shurtleff, made up the program. The multi- tudinous campus organizations are reported to take to these weekly programs like ducks to Water. Demoniacally gleeful at the oppor- tunity of using the student assembly as victims of their theatrical outbursts, they overwhelmed the president with requests for engagements. He, frustrated and despondent in his attempt to Hprotecti' the student assembly, passed the torch to the School Council. A certain physical training teacher, owing to her ribald conduct, was asked to leave the hall. She stoutly refused to do so. Her influence quickly spread over the audience and the ultra-dramatic stars were forced to play to,a chaotic house. Knowing the show must go on, they bravely weathered the storm of peanuts, carrots, and pennies and concluded the performance without police intervention. Feb.
