In response To an inquiry as To pIans To be pursued by The new adminisTraTion, I described aT some IengTh an audiTorium ThaT I wished To have buiIT. I had served here as direcTor oT pubIic speaking and as dramaTic coach so Iong ThaT I TeIT The imperaTive need oT a good audiTorium and a com- modious sTage, and I wanTed The buiIding To be imposing enough To Take hoId oT The imaginaTions oT The sTudenTs. When I described whaT I wanTed, seaTing capaciTy and archiTecTuraI appeaI, aT IeasT one member oT The Board suggesTed ThaT I was a visionary. Some oT The members did noT beIieve ThaT we shouId ever have need oT an audiTorium seaTing I7OO peopIe, and wiTh a sTage such as I had de- scribed. LasT year The sTudenTs asIced me To wriTe a page IisTing The high spoTs in my experience as a Teacher. For reasons ThaT I need noT go inTo. I did noT aTTempT iT, buT if I were To wriTe on ThaT Theme This year, I shouId IisT The opening days oT The TaII Term oT This presenT academic year. When we proiecTed our greaT audiTorium, I held a TaITering sorT oT hope ThaT some day iT mighT be TiIIed wiTh college men and women, buT I did noT expecT To Iive Iong enough To see The greaT day. This year has seen The vision TransTormed inTo a reaIiTy. When we proiecTed The audiTorium, we had a TacuITy numbering ThirTy-six, many oT The members wiTh inadeguaTe preparaTiong Today we have a TacuITy numbering one hun- dred TourTeen, sixTeen aT whom have aTTained The docTo- raTe, and TiTTy-Tour oThers have passed The goaI oT The masTer's. The audiTorium, in my mind, symboIizes our as- piraTions and achievemenTs. As one approaches The cam- pus Trom aImosT any direcTion, The body oT The audiTorium is masked by The oTher buiIdings or by Trees, buT Trom Thorp I-IiII To The wesT, or any oT The hills To The souTh, The TraveIIer aIong our highways may see, any aTTernoon, The dome oT The building, TIoaTing IiIce a greaT red bubbIe above The Tree Tops, symbolizing an aspiraTion, a dream, and aT The same Time a reaIiTy.
