Manson Van B jennlngs Presldent Southern Connectlcut State College To be a member of the Class of 76 IS to graduate durlng our B1centenn1al Year a year that marks the two hundredth ann1versary of the Declaratlon of Independence In the course of two centur1es we have welded the or1g1nal colomes 1nto a natlon that now spans a contlnent and beyond Eas1ly accesslble natural resources coupled w1th 1ncreas1ngly productlve agr1culture and lndustry have g1ven us the hlghest mater1al standard of l1v1ng 1n the world Schools colleges and cultural 1nst1tut1ons have kept pace w1th the growth of commerce and lndustry NOtW1thSt3HdlHg part1c1pat1on 1n two world wars and several lesser wars and our 1nvent1on of nuclear weapons we have had falth that cultural and mater1al progress 1S a normal expectat1on w1th each passlng decade The celebratlon of our B1centenn1al Year has turned our thoughts back to the h1stor1c developments that have made our soc1ety what lt IS today All of us however need to look forward as well Wlll the trends of the past contlnue 1nto the future? Can we contlnue to expect progress as we move from generatlon to generat1onp Or IS It posslble that we ln the Unlted States together w1th the other 1nhab1tants of our globe are at a turnlng pomt? Energy and other natural resources are no longer plentlful Democratlc soc1et1es seem to be f1nd1ng It 1ncreas1ngly d1ff1cult to cope w1th the monumental problems we face The future IS an uncertaln one Our mater1al standard of l1v1ng may or may not lmprove 1n the years of the world s 1nhab1tants Nothlng short of opt1m1z1ng the appllcatlon of educated lntelllgence wrll enable us to enhance the quallty of l1fe The real challenge faclng 1nst1tut1ons of hlgher learnmg IS to provlde educatlonal opportunlty IH support of thls goal The challenge to today s youth IS to capltallze educatlonal opportunlty so that they may contrlbute to an lmproved quallty of llfe As we celebrate the B1centenn1al Year It IS appropr1ate that we revlew the herltage of the past two centur1es It 1S equally appropr1ate that we look to the future The year 1976 1S llkely to be a turnlng polnt ln our h1story yust as was true of the year 1776 Whether we move forward to an lmproved future or fall effectlvely to cope w1th the economlc pOl1t1C3l and soclal problems of our day 1S dependent upon the quallty of educated lntelllgence IH the body pol1t1c Thrs year s college graduates are a cruclal part of that body pol1t1c and 1n a democratlc SOC1Cty must accept the1r share of respons1b1l1ty Those of us who have tr1ed to provlde educatlonal opportunlty at Southern Connectlcut State College hope we have done reasonably well ln fulf1ll1ng our m1ss1on we trust that our students have done equally well 1n cap1tal1z1ng educatlonal opportunlty for the1r own beneflt and more lmportant for the beneflt of the larger SOC1Cty ln whlch we all l1ve 7 7 ' 1 ' a ' 7 7 ahead. But the major issue is whether we can sustain or improve the quality of life for ourselves and the rest 7 , . 7
