President Board Approves Capital Expenditures The operating budget needs for the 1973-74 biennium were presented to the state Board of Higher Education for capital improvements. The first priority for capital expenditures was the renovation of Overstreet Auditorium with an addition to the stage area of classrooms. offices, workrooms and storage for the Speech and Drama Departments. The ROTC program began its first year's operation using the old National Guard Armory. after some modifications by the Physical Plant maintenance staff. At the first awards ceremony for the ROTC, Dr. Bruce said, This is a very fine addition to the academic program of Southern State College. The State Board of Higher Educa- tion at their meeting on October 2. 1972, officially approved a graduate program in the field of teacher education at SSC to begin in the year 1974-75. Preparation had been under way during the current year for an evaluation of the undergraduate pro- gram on campus by the North Central Association as a step toward the beginning of the master's degree program. Consultants recommended by officials of the North Central As- sociation and the National Association for the Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs have been work- ing with Southern State during the 1972-73 academic year in preparation for the graduate program. During the year Dr. Bruce attended the annual meetings of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education and the North Central As- sociation. He served as division chair- man of the United Fund Drive for the College and public school personnel. TOP: Between classes James Fort chats with Dr. Bruce. Board of Trustees Board Institutes Master Of Education Program To Serve Needs Of Teachers Having had several special meet- ings as well as their regular meet- ings dealing with the role and the scope of the institution, the Board of Trustees approved by a unani- mous decision the recommendation made by President Bruce that steps be taken toward instituting a Mas- ter of Education degree to serve the educational needs of the teachers living within commuting distance of the College campus. The trustees also approved the budgets to be submitted through the Department of Higher Educa- tion to the legislature for 1973 through 1975, including the financ- ing and renovation of, as well as the addition to, Overstreet Hall auditorium. and the construction of a new classroom building. ln addition to this, the Board of Trustees also approved a contract for the replacement of most of the roofs on the major buildings.
