A St 1 l'he necd for '1gricultur'1l products is greittr every dav 'is tht country becomes more thickly settled and the cities lIlC1'C'lSL in population. l'o mcet this need the farmer must farm more scientifically and produce more pro- ducts on the same amount of land. The time is here-practically speaking- when he can no longer acquire new land when the old wears out, as most of that adapted to farming is now under cultivation. lt is the purpose of this school to prepare the boys and girls to do this when they get out in life, to make life more pleasurable by teaching him, or her, how to manage, and how to make the farm home more beautiful and better equipped. NYhile it gives special training in vocational work, it by no means ne- glects the regular academic courses. All the essential ones are taught along with the vocational subjects. ln this way it not only prepares the student to better serve mankind and himself by teaching better farming methods, but to follow other occupations, if preferable, as any other high school does. In addition to the regular school courses open to the student, there are plenty of opportunities for student activities. There are: five literary so- cieties, all of which are doing good work: a good live Sunday School: Y. M. C. A. for boys: Y. XY. A. X ti. R. C. for girls, a good band: a good orches- tra, and special programs from time to time. rendered by the school under the supervision of the expression and music teachers. Realizing that the literary education and athletics go Uhand in handf' the necessary time is devoted to the different forms of athletics, a high moral standard being upheld throughout. Besides the physical training ob- tained in this kind of sport, there is the co-operative and self-control training that is equally important in future life if the student is success- fully coached. livery effort is put forth to help the student in all these XXXS ff fi A fl 1 1 1 Z A5 494 t1 ' 1 Z 7 f 9 fig 'Ze A Xt' '. WB In I AG OLI . St . CGLLEGE As a district agricultural school the Magnolia Agricultural School has had battles to fight. .Ns an Agricultural and Mechanical College all former battles and accomplishments pale into insignif- icance. XYe. as students, believe that our College is doing more for the education of boys and girls of Arkansas than any other State insti- tution. considering the money expended. XYe back up this belief by inviting comparisons by those who wish to investigate. lt is a dark picture that we see when we look forward to the opening of our next session when we will have to turn as many of our boys and girls away as we are able to take in, on account of inadequate dormitory and class-room facilities. Hut on the other hand, it will be a chal- lenge to the mothers and fathers of this district that will not go un- answered. 'l'herefore, in the birth of our AX. X M. College, we are earnestly asking the people of ,Xrkansas for a greater ,X. K M. College for the Southwest district, not to gratify anyones personal ambition, but to satisfy a very real and urgent need for our brothers and sis- ters in this district. We are firm believers that right will pre- yailfl and before our State legislators meet again, we as students of this school are going to see to it that our representatives are fully acquainted with his crying need. XVe are assured by the authorities of the School that although the making of the school into an JN. K M. College, with full rights and privileges which go with such an institution. will broaden its op- portunities as such. yet at the same time the high school course will not be neglected, but will be strengthened to the last possible de- gree. ,Ev Fourteen S N E N N S S N SS Cb E lx? There are many clark corners of our broad land in which the study of scientific agriculture as Z1 branch of education has not come into its ow11. ln such places, the struggle to give boys and girls a chance at this most important education- al pursuit. may be said to be a cause for which honest men and women, who have seen far enough into the future to have caught the vision, are willing' to battle. Yocational Education is indeed yet a comparatively new concept of education in this enlightened land of ours. ln some sections of the coun- try. it is true. it is beginning to be appreciated at its true worth, but in our Sum1y Southland it has resulted in the production of only a handful of men and women who cannot fill the huge demands made upon them to carry the gospel of Scientific Agricultural liducation to the more remote dis- tricts. Most of our men and women who are trained in the science of agri- culture and tl1e arts of home making are in demand as teachers and mis- sionaries of this new 'fcause . 1 The country, in its rapid strides. in which new things so quickly be- come old. will always need teachers and leaders to point out the way for so many who must follow and profit by the right kind of leadership. The Yocational Department of the A. X M. Each cow is charged with the feed she consumes and the profit goes to the boy or girl who milks her. Most of IE these boys and girls have been making their board the N past year by so doing. Considerable fortitude and energy are required to enable a young man or a young lady to go to the dairy barn three times a day and milk a cowg however, that kind of a boy or ffirl will succeed in edu- cating himself or herself and will develop into the men and women who prosper in this world. I if 71 , l IZ ll I ITERARY DEPARTMENT The citadel of all education is built on a literary foundation. lt matters not what calling one would follow, whether general or technical. a prere- quisite is a general high school training. -X merchant without it would feel embarrassed: a lawyer without it would probably have to close up his of- ficeg a doctor without it might be dangerous: a farmer without it probably could raise cotton, corn, and pigs, but he would fall far short of the full measure of the joy of living. Agriculture is the Mistress of all callings, but he who would court and win her favor, must come bearing the impress of intelligence, and pos- sessing those qualities of mind and character that are the product of a close and earnest association with literary subjects. He must lay at hcr feet the rich treasurers of History, Literature, Science, and Mathematics. The legislators of the past acted wisely in providing these .Xgricultural schools where high school training and technical training could go hand in hand and be available to the farmers' children everywhere. The heads of these schools have planned wisely, in that the curriculum measures up to the standard of the best high schools in the State, and at the same time meets the requirements of real agricultural schools. Knowledge of Agriculture, Horticulture, .Xnimal Husbandry. Dairy- ing. Poultry, Shop. Motor Mechanics, and Domestic Science and Art is a necessary requirement in the successful operation of the farm: and these balanced with the knowledge of History, Science, English, and Blathe- matics, fill farm life with a joy and pleasure that can not be found else- where. Music and expression go hand i11 hand, for expression is the linking of Perfect music into noble words' a11d coupling' them both inseparably with noble thoughts, and music expresses the exquisite emotions of the soul. We realize that we must now set for ourselves another goal and work valiantly toward it if we are to keep up to the standard that has been ever kept before us. We are grieved when we look around us and see the reduetion from our roll of sixty freshmen. Some have en- tirely dropped out, while others have gone on to other scheols. Part of the vacancies thus made have been filled by boys and girls who have Hstuckll. Some have been with us only a year, but now we feel that we are all one big family which will soon have to part and go our way separ- ately. The benefits which we have received during the time spent here have not all been mental, but moral and spirit- ual as well. The members of our class have always been willing and faithful workers in the Sunday School, the Y. M. C. A., and the Girls' Reserve Club. The social part of our lives has not been neglected. Entertainments and soeials have been enjoyed by all. and the help derived from the literary societies has been very great. wh 6 Now, as we near the close of the year, we know that gh lss we are better equipped to face life's battles, no matter X where they may be fought. We will leave thankful that El N we have had the privilege of associating with our teaelr Q ers and our fellow students. if .N N N Q S S S S v B In Ki If ' . A' f gflllblllggg I E S ,jf 21 1 1 Alf? X W COLLEGE SUNDAY SCHOOL At the beginning of the present school year, when the enrollment had passed the four hundred mark, the ques- tion of the transportation of those students who wished to attend Sunday School in Magnolia became a serious one. After a thorough discussion of the situation by the fac- ulty, and with the approval of the Board of Trustees, it was decided best to organize a College Sunday School. Attendance was not made compulsory nor were those who desired to attend the Sunday School of the various city churches denied this privilege, but were rather en- couraged to do so. The organization was completed early in November, with fourteen officers and teachers and one hundred eight pupils present. l. XV. Holmes was chosen Superintendent, XY. F. Burns, Assistant Superintendent, and Mrs. Ii. Ii. Graham, Secretary-Treasurer. 5 ft C CD 2 FD P ' CD 1 5 Z 9 I 7 3 4 Z Qkxxm mxxmwfftg 4Q' ' 5 R is fig Q3 2452 ', L 5 15 - CD CI' pi-4 D.. 3 N 24 4 P F2 ? ' The societies existing' were unable to add to their membership many who were applicants. The faculty members, for this reason, believed that a broad field for social activities could be gained by the organization of an additional society. The Columbian Literary Society thus became a new factor in the social activities of the A. X M. College. Second Term T OFFICERS Third Term Claucl Overton ..... .......... I ,resident ........ ...Y...
