Petite Barbara Reeves displays her agility during a rous- ing yell. The fact that SE iust made the first touchdown in the Foot- ball Preview September B explains the excitement and pride registered on the faces of Pat Ford and her fellow Sparket members. Each time you hear the opening strains of Oh, South- east High School is the school for me-There is no other place I'd rather be, each time you stand at attention with your classmates as the flag is unfurled, each time you see our beloved principal and coach appear at assem- blies, you know that all this is your heritage. This is the true spirit of Spartanland. Never in the eleven-year history of SE has the student body been more closely unified in school spirit than this year. This unity has great meaning, for through unity there is strength, cooperative effort for achievements, peaceful relations, happiness and fellowship, and above all there is the ultimate of effort, success. SE's band helped to open the Oklahoma State Fair by marching downtown with 70 other bands Septem- ber 24. 'Q Donning their SE mums and adding the finishing touches to decorations on the car, Pam Kennedy and Sharon Sylvester prepare to ioin the homecoming parade. Brightly decorated cars followed the SE band through a section of Capitol Hill, October 13. L LK 1. Enthusiasm is never lacking on a bus with pep club girls along. AA What better place to make friends lhan in the cafeteria? Tommy Bell, Gary Bogie, John Rhodes, Mark Hoffman, Ronnie Merrill, and Ronald Folsom enioy a good ioke over a good meal. ln classrooms, in activities, we worked and learned together. We ate lunch, went to meetings and games, and studied together. Each day we learned a little more about get- ting along with people. Gary Barton, Sybil Graystone, Kathryn Ball, and Larry Clayton enioy the last few minutes of their lunch hour with a friendly chat. Mr. Snyder lends a helping hand to Ben Hunter as the auto Out of this, friendships developed, deep and permanent, resulting in the all-important feeling of belonging, an imperative need of every human being. SE's halls hum with the throb of everyday life as students pursue different dreams, am- bitions, and desires. They turn the hollow building into something alive, something almost human. Janelle Campbell didn't realize how many friends she actually had 'til mechanics swdem mes 10 coax his car ,O mn' it came her time to furnish transportation to a ball game. Its worthy traditions, its ideals of honor, the loyalty of its constituents, its outstanding achievements in a great variety of activities have won for SE the place of honor and prestige which it enioys among city and state high schools. ln addition to the Spartans who have brought recognition to our school academically and sportswise, every student who has crossed SE's threshold has made his mark in contributing to its heritage. WARREN F. WELCH Ward eq77eo,6!eP SCHOOLS ARE GROWING ENTERPRISES! Few of us are aware that Oklahoma City schools are bulging at the seams with 65,998 students attending classes every day. Two thousand two hundred sixty-two teachers and 98 schools, plus some 232 administrative positions are required to provide city students the best education possible. Several hundred counselors, nurses, librarians, office clerks, and secretaries are listed on the school payrolls. Around 600 cafe- teria employees and 297 custodians complete the roster of school personnel. Oklahoma City is fortunate to have a superintendent and school board who recognize the seriousness of operating this rapidly growing school system. Our students and citizens should be proud of and grateful to these civic minded people who give so much of their time and energy for the betterment of our schools. OTTO F. THOMPSON Ward ll W. F. LOTT LUKE SKAGGS JR. PHIL C. BENNETT Ward III Ward IV Member at Large I4 54404137 Spartans will be forever grateful for the leadership we have enioyed during our high school years. Our administrators' pride in Southeast and loyal support of every phase of school activities are over- whelming. Under Mr. Mayes' direction, SE has shown marked improvements. He has played an important part in directing this year's Sl50,000 construction program. Additional facdlty members, a wider choice of subiects, and greater opportuni- ties for students are a few of the proiects he has enthusiastically worked to imple- ment in his three years here. Mr. Mayes and Mr. King actively partici- pate in professional organizations, where they are recognized as leading educators in Oklahoma City's school system. Alert to the needs of the school, and to their profession, our principal and vice principal are the biggest assets claimed by Southeast High School. These jovial, congenial fellows personify school spirit at its best. Their tireless efforts for the betterment of our school are an inspiration, not only to teachers and students, but to the entire community. DEE KING Vice Principal Mr. King possesses a thorough understanding of school problems. Supervising teachers' records and reports and assisting students with their problems are only part of his wide responsibilities. STERLING MAYES Principal Noted for his warm, sparkling personality, Mr. Mayes Cbetter known as Mr Spartanj is a familiar figure in the halls, and at ball games and events in Spartanland as he greets his constituents. Ada Wwe? ' r a i Our counselors are always on the alert, ready to help SE students ad- iust their personal and school prob- lems. They also supervise enrollment and testing. Mr. Ransford expresses his views on the mob of hungry seventh graders around him, and Mr. Lyon wistfully agrees. These two faculty members braved the elements in the cafeteria while the teachers' lunch room was being renovated. Due to the Sl50,000 building program which got underway at SE last summer, the building was in various stages of construction as the year wore on. Cafeteria ladies labored under the most trying circumstances, as they prepared lunches without benefit of kitchen utilities. The teachers' new lunch room was not completed before Christmas. The clutter of work materials and unfinished rooms created more headaches for the custodians. Thanks to the tireless efforts of these ladies, hungry students received nourishing lunches on schedule even under trying conditions of remodeling the cafeteria. December 9 the Spartans swept to the state play-offs, and school display cases bulged as coveted trophies were added. The excitement of the athletic events will long be a very real part of us. Understanding, comradeship, and high standards of sportsmanship are fostered on the field of play. SPARTANS RACE TO STATE FINALS IN BEST SEASON, COACH CHOATE TAPPED FOR STATE COACHING HONOR The Spartan footballers, enioying their best season ever, won eight straight games, tied for the conference championship, and journeyed all the way to the Class A state finals. Five Spartans placed on the All-Con- ference team, and two earned All-State ratings. Coach Dean Choate was selected to command the South team in the All-State game. HARDING-After falling behind 16-O, the Spartans roared back to defeat the favored Eagles, 42-22, and to become the top ranked team in the state Class A polls. Bateman passed for 249 yds. and completed TD tosses to Taylor and Miller. Crews scored twice on runs of four and 51 yds., Bell crossed from the four, Bate- man, from the one. Miller caught three aerials for conversions. CHICKASHA-Once again SE fell behind, 20-8, before downing the Chicks, 34-26. Spartans' devastating air attack netted 272 yds. and two touchdowns. Bell led the scoring parade with three tallies. Crews followed with two, Miller added two conversions. CLASSEN-Spartans smashed the hapless Comets, 44-O, for their third victory. Again Bell was the leading scorer with three touchdowns. Miller, Lusk, and Cul- bertson managed the other six-pointers for SE. Bell, Wall, and Lusk added the extra points. JOHN MARSHALL-Using their passing attack spar- ingly, SE handled the Bears, 32-14. Yeargain scored the Spartans' first TD by recovering a fumble in the end zone. Bell ran the next one over from the three. Bateman then loosened up and hit Wall twice and Miller once for SE's last three tallies. Miller ran over the only two-pointer. CENTRAL-SE squeaked by the Cardinals, 20-12, for their fifth straight win of the season. Bell netted 12 points on two TD's for the Spartans, Miller snatched a Bateman pass for the other six-pointer. Crews added the only conversion. ST. MARY'S-Striking for 32 points in ten minutes, SE trounced the Rockets, 44-14. In perhaps the oddest play of the season, Bell grabbed a screen pass from Bateman and galloped 89 yds., but failed to score. ln their eagerness to down the last defender, the wave of blockers surrounding Bell caused a tangle of humanity that sent Bell tumbling. Taylor, Crews, Miller, Wall, Stansberry, and Lickliter notched touchdowns for SE, Crews, Bateman, and Wall accounted for the extra points. DEL CITY-Moving equally well on the ground and in the air, SE sailed by the Eagles, 28-14. Bateman ran TD's of 33 and two yds., passed 50 yds. to Taylor for another. Bell scampered 59 yds. for the other tally. Crews and Bell added two-pointers. VARSlTY-ROW 1: Bateman, Taylor, DeVilliers, Yeargain, Burton, Hoffman, McWaters, Wall. Taylor and Wall scored TD's on passes from Bateman, Miller and Taylor earned the extra points. ANADARKO-The Spartans proved they hadn't lost their winning ways as they trounced the Warriors, 44-6, the following week. Bell led the scorers with three touchdowns, Miller followed with one six-pointer and three conversions. Crews and Burton, on a pass interception, claimed the other tallies. Bateman, Culbertson, and Bell earned the TD's, and a Bateman-Taylor pass accounted for the sion. COHVGP SEMINOLE-The powerful Chieftains struck for three touchdowns and a safety in the first I3 minutes and drove on to a 30-I6 victory over SE for the C State Championship. Hampered by the rain 'ass A that fell throughout the game, the Spartans were never able to put forth a serious challenge. Bell scored SE's first TD on a I3 yd. pass from Bateman. SE's first win of the season came at the expense of conference foe John Marshall, 53-51. The Comets of Classen were next to find that the Spartans had come to life. After a setback at the hands of Central, the Spartans downed McGuin- ness, 49-47, Grant, 38-35, and then avenged the earlier loss to Central, 36-31. These two victories, against arch rivals Grant and Central, Capital Conference champions, were the high points of the basketball season. SE was knocked out of the Edmond Tournament in the first round by Pauls Valley, but followed with victories over John Marshall and McGuin- ness in double overtimes. Harding, in another overtime, kept the Spartans from extending their streak. SE closed its regular season with victories over Classen and Edmond. In the regional Tournament the Spartans downed John Marshall, 58-50, in the opening frame, but were beaten in the semi-final round by the avengeful Cardinals from Central. From the time Southeast students gather for a gabfest before the 8:30 bell to the end of sixth hour at 3:30, a rich, full day has transpired.
