POWELL ' Vice-Principal Dear Seniors: PROGRESS is rooted in the thinking, vision, and courage of individuals. It is determined not so much by where we are as by the direction we are moving. It emanates from research and work in harmony with God's laws and with the purpose of His creation. Our technological age is characterized by scientific discoveries and applications. New products give birth to new industries that provide employment for thousands. Machines replace unskilled and repetitive workers, Skilled workers are needed to build and operate machines. Each advance- ment in machine production results in more jobs. Democracy progresses when its principles are convictions in the lives of its citizens. Jefferson said, That government is best which governs the least. To avoid the threatening inroads of com- munism, indifference, and confusion, power must be retained on the level of the governed and responsibility on the level of those who govern. Our country can win friends and influence nations by giving unasked and with ioy our surpluses to feed their hungry, clothe their naked, and heal their sick. But let not the giving be for recognition, nor for hidden desire, nor for open military obligation. Then, without being forced, the receivers of our good will will be our country's friends, and no cunning meddlers will change them. Your earth of tomorrow will be exciting, wonderful, and full of new opportunities. You are rich in unused days and years. Time is your greatest wealth. It passes quickly. Use it wisely. Sincerely yours, Harry R. McMillan Principal bmw. Wwmf , ., .. ,f !5!5 , f Qc ' . Q f ' Rasa' lf' Tr' .v'i4W'ysftM'w , 20 8, f Z '.,,,g.rH'f' K A f-Q-vw - 4 . Dear Seniors: One thing is certain: you will make no progress without education. The facts and ideals, the skills and methods which are the tools of thinking must be re-learned and refined by every oncoming generation. lf the progress of mankind is to continue, the rules of society and its moral codes must be re-taught in each age. As an educated American, each of you has the responsibility of helping to create a better life, not only for yourself and your neighbors, but also for the people of other races and nationalities. Now-may we depend on you to do your part, even though it seems to be a small one, starting right here in your own community Sincerely, George R. I have learned more by living with you in your Castle for one year than I have learned in all of my high school years combined in my country, Italy. I have had the chance to see America from an inside view and have learned to understand the American people. I have been an American teen-ager with all of the pleasures and responsi- bilities that you, my friends, have experienced. I can say now that although customs and ways of doing things differ, boys and girls are alike all over the world. The American Field Service, through its program, is trying to show that the peoples of the world must know each other for we are all brothers. We sometimes fail to realize this fact. I thank you, Knights and Ladies, for helping me to understand this basic truth. I thank you again because for one year you have been my world-my wonderful world. Although it was a constant struggle for the staff to concentrate on their work, progress in this year's Crusader was eventually accom- plished. The classes orrground floor might question the truth of the latter statement after a year of hearing laughter and the music of the radio drifting through the doors and observ- ing some of the unusual antics of the staff. Nevertheless, we did find time to work hard. Mr. Tira, the advisor, John Nelson, the editor, and an evil looking paddle, the Per- suader, were three excellent reasons why we worked and tried to produce a good book. This Crusader represents the results of our work. We hope the innovations we have made will help make this annual an enioyable book to read. l l xx ' l 1 vw, . Haunting strains of Autumn Leaves provided a sharp contrast to the excitement of homecoming and the energetic skeletons of Halloween. Glittering snowflakes and a white Christmas were The highpoints of winter. Songs about Apple Blossom Time and The usual stormy weather of spring heralded The arrival of This gay season of flowers and Easter. Summer, with its scorching heat and lazy days, was illustrated by the annual Fourth of July celebration and The state fair com- plete with a marching band. I V AGA ll Cheaper by the Dozen, this year's spring play, was a very successful and delightful production. The play, with its heartwarming and humorous incidents, revolved around the unusual life of the Gilbreth family. This clan differed from most families of the Tvventies in that the Gilbreths included Mother, Dad, whose life was dedicated to saving time, and a dozen children. Mrs. Fitzgerald, the grumbling but devoted house- keeper, Joe Scales, an over-enthusiastic cheerleader, Miss Brill, a stuffy school teacher, and Snoopy, the dumb dog were a few of the characters who were important in some way to the Gilbreth family. Miss Maria Theresa Fetters, the director, the cast, and the various com- mittees worked co-operatively to make Cheaper by the Dozen an enioyable play. That's The word that was going around The Castle because the hard-fight- ing Knights of Southeast had iust won The interscholastic League title. The season started out in a dismal manner, because of The outcome of The first Two games. The first game was won by The slight margin of one point, 19-18, against North Kansas City. The second game ended with The Knights on The short end of a 6-O score against Ray- town. This defeat seemed to make the boys fight harder, and the next week they won the first league game of the season. The first victory set the boys off on a streak which lasted The rest of The year, and eventually brought the interscholastic League championship back To South- east. This made The fourth time in eight years that South- east had won the interscholastic League title. The last game of the year was a non-league game against Paseo which the Knights won by a score of 30-6. This game was also homecoming at Southeast, and Miss Connie Huggins, the football queen, was crowned at The half- time ceremonies. This wrapped up a very successful sea- son for The Knights, a season in which they were champ- ions in sportsmanship as well as football. The new champs finished league play with seven wins and no losses, and They came out with an overall record of nine wins and one loss. ' 1-- tics:-,. Richter, The T960 Knights' B-Team, not to be overshadowed by the varsity, came out on top in the final standings of the interscholastic League Junior Varsity division. They started off the season with a win over North Kansas City, 25-19. The next game, played against Raytown, ended with the score deadlocked at T3-13. This left a non-league record of one victory and one tie. The first league game against Central started the boys out on a streak which lasted the rest of the season, and left them undefeated and unscored on in league play. For their fine season the champs received a gold trophy, which was presented to the school. Their overall record of the season was eight wins and one tie. Not to be outdone by either the varsity or the B-team, the freshmen also showed their football skill by compiling a fine record for the season. They ended up with five victories, three of them being shut-outs, one loss, and one tie. However, this'year the Knights, under the able direction of coach Nate Roitman, displayed a good deal of power by ending the season as co-champs of the Inter- scholastic League. Solid performances were turned in by all the members ofthe team, and Ken Wood, Larry Norris, and Jack Patterson came through with extremely good play game after game. Even though the Knights were co-champs of the interscholastic League, they did not have any real hopes of going to state when they entered the regionals at Raytown. However, the boys swamped Lee's Summit in their first game, and out-distanced Sedalia Smith-Cotton in their second game to gain a place in the finals against Raytown. Since Ray- town had already beaten us earlier in the season not much hope was held for a victory, but by combining a blazing fast- break, a tight defense, and great teamwork, the Knights forged their way into the state tournament. The first game of the state tournament was against Rockhurst, and the Knights put on a tremendous display of basketball by win- ning 68-56 in overtime. This victory entitled the boys to a trip to St. Louis, where the rest of the tournament was being held. Their first round foe was Crystal City, who proved to be a little too powerful for the Knights by defeating them and removing them from the tournament. All in all it was a very successful season, with the boys compiling a respectable record of sixteen wins and seven losses. Steve, an inherently good person, was very well-liked by adults and young people alike. lt was a pleas- ure to be around Steve because he was always friendly, happy and enthusiastic. At Southeast, Steve was a member of the Round Table, parti- cipated in track, and was a member of the B- Team in football. Besides taking an active part in school functions, Steve found time for his interesting hobby of photography. Steve loved Southeast. This was evidenced by the fact that, during his illness, his main desire was to return to school in order that he might graduate with his friends. l42 f TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The WorId's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made PANY nade f w fx ' W EV UN TQ , N - -,,, il w 4 9
