EPICTETUS r P W 1 i 1 1 V i HARRY R MCMILLAN, Pmzcipal DEAR SENIORS: Brief have been the days since first we met in The Great Hall. Deep is your gratitude for memories of life in the Castle, a record of your yesterdays. It is not just thoughts of the past that you cherish. You are eager, ready, and prepared to travel the highway that leads from your yesterdays to to- morrow's dwelling place of your ambitions and desires. So let Today embrace Yesterday with pleasant memories and Tomorrow with keen anticipation. Life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterdayf, Your daily life will be your new Castle. When you enter therein, take with you the Southeast motto, A brave South- east Knight loveth chivalry, truth, honor, freedom, and fair courtesy , the Southeast spirit, and your feeling of pride, faith, and confidence in your new Castle. Then, as now, you will be glad for the memories of this day, your Day of Com- mencement. Sincerely yours, HARRY R. MCMILLAN, Principal xv' K 'E life here in the Southeast Castle is designed to provide sound physical growth and mental development that will furnish you, our students, the best tools of thought available for constructive thinking. It is designed to teach morality that will insure habits of praiseworthy living among all races and creeds of men and provide experiences that will increase your Trust in God and encourage obedience to His law as it is taught in the church of your choice. Time passes so rapidly that We hope each of you will grasp every opportunity to participate in the many activities of our free society. After graduation you should be found at Work in civic organizations which are seeking to safeguard our free democratic Way of life. May We find you actively interested in political parties, commercial associations, and labor unions, as well as doing volunteer work in scientiic, philanthropic, church, and welfare groups. Your unselfish, even sacrificial service, should exceed the record of our hon- ored ancestors Who nutured the institutions of our free so- ciety. We are fortunate to have such a heritage, and we are obligated to preserve and improve it for our children's chil- dren. In, such endeavors, our best Wishes attend each of you. Sincerely, GEORGE R. This trophy was paid for out of the life savings of Hank Wilhemson Who Was killed in World War II. It was given in memory of Hfteen Knights who gave their lives for their country. The inscription on the trophy reads, Knights' Memorial Award given in consideration of scholarship, athletics, and citizenship. The recipient represented his school with distinction on athletic teams, made satisfactory progress in scholarship, practiced loyalty to our standards and traditions as a citizen in school and throughout the community, and demonstrated that a Southeast Knight loveth chivalry, truth, honor, freedom, and fair courtesyf I' 68 S PRIZE C , '. From our higher vantage point, we can see and understand much more clearly than we could when We started the climb. In the past year we have taken an active part in departmental clubs and have begun to develop special skills and talents. With a sense of accomplishment, we glance for a moment down the path which we have just traveled and then look forward to the added privileges and responsibilities of our junior year. The music de- partment, the largest department at Southeast, consists of the band, orchestra, a cappella choir, girls' choir, girls' glee club, boys' chorus, girls' octet, boys' octet, and the eighth grade mixed chorus. Participation in the music de- partment improves musical ability and allows the student to develop by performing before others. The Southeast orchestra provides appropriate music for the Spring Play, Knightlites, the In- duction, and various assemblies. This year the orchestra played at the Missouri State Music Educators Convention. The band members give their time and tal- ent to enrich parades and assemblies. The band helps to keep school spirit high by marching and playing at various football games. The a cappella choir is composed of sopho- more, junior, and senior boys and junior and senior girls. It is one of the most popular mu- sic groups. Under the capable direction of Mr. Markley, the choir participates in various pro- grams throughout the year such as baccalau- reate, graduation exercises, assemblies, All- City Choir Festival, and Southeast Music Fes- tival. The choir also sings at various churches throughout the city. The girls' and boys' octets represent South- east on various programs in Kansas City. The octets are directed by Mr. Markley and Miss Demand. They have entertained at various church meetings, the All-City Talent Show, and at various school programs. The girls' glee and the boys' chorus are di- rected by Miss Demand and the girls' chorus is directed by Mr. Markley. These three groups also participate in various programs and assem- bly programs throughout the year. Much of the credit is due to Mr. Patterson, the head coach, Mr. Chamblee, assistant coach, Mr. Flappan, sec- ond team coach, and Mr. Wolf, freshman team coach. The basketball season ended with the first game in the state tournament in St. Louis. The Knights placed second in the lnterscholastic League and won the Raytown regionals. Mr. Adams is the head coach and Mr. Wolf is the assistant coach. At the beginning of our track season, the Southeast team placed fourth in the Missouri high school events of the Big Eight Indoor Meet. Mr. Cross is the track coach. Although these are the three major sports at Southeast, we have outstanding golf and tennis teams. Mr. Maupin coaches the tennis team, and Mr. Becklean, the golf team. The main goal of our Knights is to practice sportsmanship in all their games. The enthu- siastic support of the student body helps the teams to attain this goal. Each year has brought us something new In lessons, play, or friendship true. And now life's trials before us lie We're leaving you, dear Southeast High, And as We part, Your memories seem to fill our hearts. Our five years here have simply flown, And now we find that to each one You've given so much more than fun or friends, but knowledge as this era ends To help us through the toil and strife And ready each to face his life As now we turn to say good-by To all our friends at Southeast High.
