The original part of the building was opened in 193 8. Because of rapidly growing enroll- ment, the school soon became overcrowded. An addition, including thirteen classrooms, a swimming pool, gymnasium, and balcony for the auditorium, was completed in 1954. Southeast is proud to have one of the newest and most modern high school buildings in Kansas City. The en- rollment of the music department outnumbers that of any other department in the school. The Knights and Ladies participating in the band, orchestra, a capella choir, girls' choir and girls' gleeclub, octet, boys, chorus, and eighth grade mixed chorus not only advance their education in music, but they also have a chance to per- form for the whole student body at various programs. The band members are called upon to give much of their time and talent to parades and assemblies. Their colorful music also lends a gay and festive air at various athletic contests, such as the Interscholastic League football games. The Southeast orchestra is composed of those students who wish to increase their ability in music. It furnishes appropriate music for such school activities as the Spring Play, Knightlites, the Induction, and various assemblies. r an Occasions The a capella choir is composed of sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors and is one of the most popular features of the music department. Under the direction of Mr. Markley, the choir participates in such programs as assemblies, commencement exercises, Music Festival, All- City Choir Festival. The choir also makes visits to various church organizations. The boys' and girls' octets are among the busier vocal groups at Southeast. Under the di- rection of Miss Demand and Mr. Markley the octets make appearances at various civic gath- erings and also in various assemblies and school programs. The girls' glee, girls' choir, and boys' chorus are also under the direction of Miss Demand. These organizations provide entertainment for various assemblies and other programs through- out the school year. GO, Ron, G0-' Championship Trophy Southeast's Knights became Interscholastic League football champs as they skinned the East Bears, 40-0, in their final league game of the season. This is the second undisputed cham- pionship for the Knights in the history of Southeast. Taylor, Crumm, and Snyder ac- counted for the first quarter's harvest of 27 points. Taylor and Crumm each scored once, and Snyder scored twice and added three con- versions. Snyder added another T. D. later in the game to set a new league record of 97 points. The old record of 90 points was held jointly by the Taylor brothers, Corky and Roger. Gene Wood raced into the end zone from the 20-yard line to chalk up the last league touchdown for the champion Knights. The Southeast Knights ambushed the Shaw- nee Mission Indians, 20-13, to close their excel- lent season with ten victories and no defeats. The Dr. D. M. Nigro trophy came to South- east again this year for the fourth time. Skip Snyder was the recipient of the trophy as the Most Valuable High School Football Player in the Kansas City area. Dick Unruh, Skip's teammate, was second in the poll of sports casters, writers, coaches, and officials. Previous winners were Bill Snyder, Skip,s elder brother, in 19463 Corky Taylor, in 19515 and Roger Taylor, in 1954. We will e'er be true To our colors high above thee, Scarlet and royal blue. These words will ever be remembered by us, the members of the class of 1957. Southeast has become a very important part of our lives. It is very hard to bid farewell to the school we have learned to love and respect during the last five years. We also find it hard to say good-bye to a very dear friend, Francois Lorin, who is soon returning to his home in France. We wish him God's blessings as he continues along the road of life. Our deepest gratitude goes to our wonderful administrative staff, conselors, and teachers who have done much to make our years in the Castle profitable and enjoyable. The high ideals and traditions, our classmates and friends, even the crowded halls-these will remain in our memories of Southeast. Many of us will follow roads that will take us far away from these phases of school life, but nothing will be able to take them from our memories. Graduation is the stepping stone that will take us from our beloved Castle, but nothing can ever take Southeast from us. Our fondest hope is that the banner of scarlet and blue will ever symbolize the high ideals and traditions of Southeast. Three Teachers Bid Farewell CLAUDE N HARMAN A ANNA B.
