Dear Ioe: D 1958 w This has been a very eventful day. I must tell you about it. It g fn seems only yesterday that you and I were graduated from South- Ag-K H., J, east High, even though it was back in '38. Many things have A, W L changed since then. As I strolled up the walk, I could almost see you at my side. You have been much in my memory today. ,Tfoflt 'I' 'Tl , V' The grass seemed just as green, but there were some good-sized ff 7'YW4 J an oak trees scattered over the campus that were not there on that ,jX.u' gif graduation day when you and I shook hands and parted under- 'xx gif' p F 5+ standingly. These are memorial trees, each commemorates a fallen 1 Knightg The building has not changed, although it is beginning W to take on that settled and secure look that comes with the passing 1 1 of years. I reached school early in the morning. Students were everywhere. As I stood trying to recog- nize someone, a chime sounded. The same chime sounded in our day, but We didn't have the struggle to get to classes that they have now. Remember when we were told that the Southeast student capacity was 850? That's a rather threadbare joke now, for 1150 students have been com- pressed into the same halls and the auditorium bulges with extra chairs. The faculty looks much the same with the exception of a few new faces. Some of the teachers have added a few pounds and there is a generous sprinkling of grey hairs. I was told that addi- tional teachers are needed, but all available class-room space is now in use. However, the tower and the campus are still available. The bell for lunch is still welcomed by all, even the teachers. I might have thought myself a glutten, I was so hungry, if it were not for the fact that all the others going to lunch at the time seemed just jx' as hungry as I. The cafeteria is still reached by a heavenward ascent to the high altitude of the fourth floor. The students did not seem to N0 mind the long climb, but the exertion left me quite out of breath. higher than in our day. The lines for the food seemed unending, and I marveled at the number of people who were served in so short a time. While enjoying my meal, I was startled by the sudden crooning of Bing Crosby. We were never provided with music in the cafeteria in our day. Another innovation which you and I would have enjoyed is the privilege of spending the last ten minutes of the lunch hour on the campus. I paid a visit to the library, which looks as formidable as ever with its crowded shelves of books. One of my ambitions has always been to master the complexity of the card catalogue. You had better give me another ten years though. Glancing upward I noticed Tom Sawyer still going fishing and Will Rogers looking even more like a bewildered Connecticut Yankee. J The priceslof the food are very reasonable, although considerably C X h -7 I While taking a ride on the elevator, the mournful tones of the tuba came floating down the shaft. Deciding to investigate, I rode up to the Tower. Mr. Markley still wields a strong baton over the music department. It certainly has produced fine re- I sults, for I am not at all sure he hasn't another Tschai- A 1 kowsky or two hidden up there. I've definitely decided '1Q47 61,0 not to miss the next music festival. With all that talent K1 I can't afford to miss it.
