1 1 I 517 's J O d x a id igb LL Dear Seniors: Let my message for the tenth anniversary of the Crusader he the summation of my previous Crusader messages: 19-11 . . Spoken words of appreciation are excellent, but 19-12 1943 1944 1945 the rigorous test is the degree to which your achieve- ments, in the years to follow, reflect honor to your parents and credit to this institution from which Nyou soon shall graduate .,.. N. . . Defend our democracy with good citizenship based upon appreciation of our nation's achievements, devotion to our nation's objectives, and faith in our nation's future. . , . N. . . Education, therefore, is the basis and the process of reasoning which, in turn, is the basis for the future of any nation. . . . 'Y . . Today's glorious civilization has been shaped by the contributions of great individuals whose discoveries and inventions have literally made a new earth. . . .W H The war must be won. ln this challenge, your immediate responsibilities lie. VVorld peace must be made secure. ln this determination, your opportunities begin. 1946 N. . . lN'hen respresentatives of nations assemble around a 'Round Table' having no north, south, east, west, head, or foot, and where the Golden Rule is the unit for meas- uring 'Right' or LVVrong' decisions, mutual problems will be solved and the causes of war elinunated. . . . 1947 . . . Make Southeast better because you were heref, l can only add to this my hearty congratulations and sincere MR. HARRY MCMILLAN, Pgrincipal wishes for your continuedIsIuAL:Eii3Y R. MCMILLAN It has been my good fortune to be at Southeast High School six of the ten years since its opening. Southeast in that time has established an outstanding record in the training of youth under the eflicient leadership of Mr. Harry McMillan and his faculty supported by coopera- tive patrons and an American student-body, typical of the best to be found anywhere. VVe are grateful to the tax-payers of the Kansas City School District for a beautiful building, and we await with eagerness the construction of necessary additions which will facilitate the work of both teachers and pupils. XVe must guarantee to our youth both sound theory and specialized training to prepare each to take his place in a world where preparedness daily becomes more and more important. Through these educational experiences here, we hope our graduates may spread the ideals of freedom, pet- pctuate democracy in our land, and retain these as the best hope for good government throughout the world. MR. J. G. BRYAN At present, high school supervisor, formerly Southeast High School principal. I recall so vividly the early years in the history of Southeast High School, particularly the united effort on the part of faculty and student body in creating a unique school spirit, based upon the best experience of other high schools and yet devoid of meaningless traditions. I know that your sense of school loyalty is real because it is founded upon a genuine respect for that spirit of co-operation and understand- ing which is so characteristic of Southeast High School. ' I congratulate you upon your fine accomp- lishments and extend to you my very best wishes for your continued success. GEORGE A. PETERSON WE STUDENTS OF SOUTHEAST . . . HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN PRAISE BY THINKING AND DOING NEW THINGS. These words, taken from the open- ing paragraphs of the first Crusader,', represent the spirit in which Southeast's splendid history was begun. When the first Crusader editors wrote RWE HAVE STARTED EVERYTHING WITH A CLEAN RECORD , they were ex- pressing, in a way, the philosophy which was to characterize the growth of the new school. Tra- dition was not to prevent it from thinking and doing new things! Development of resource- fulness, initiative, the spirit of adventure and a sense of responsibility were early ideals accepted by Southeast. J. G. BRYAN MR. GEORGE PETERSON At present, vice principal of Southwest High School, formerly vice principal Southeast High School.
