Qir. 6? 5 1 e p ..- x '1 'QQ- J Qi' I 3' UKIC , V, i s R F E F f 1 Entering his fifteenth season as Head Coach at SHS, Coach Don Marino was expected to lead his team to a very successful season. Seventeen Seniors as well as many promising underclassmen, all led by Senior Tri-Captains John Ohop, Ken LeBlanc, and Peter Dargie, worked hard to prepare for the coming season. Double session practices, scrimmages, and the skilled leadership of the coaching staff all helped to instill in the Pioneers a desire and attitude necessary for a winning season. - Although bad weather cancelled the Leominsterjamboree, it didn't curtail the high spirits of our football team as they battled the highly favored Shrewsbury Colonials to a scoreless tie. The game was highlighted by the Pioneers outstanding defensive unit. Iohn'Ohop and his Red Gang time and again brought the surging Colonial machine to a grinding halt. As a result, the Pioneers played to their first scoreless tie since 1961. The offensive machine for the Pioneers got rolling in the second game of the season as the Shephard Hill Rams were sent reeling by the score of 20 to 9. Undoubtedly what must be considered one of the most outstanding comeback victories in Pioneer history was staged as Southbridge hosted the powerful Gardner Wildcats. With Gardner leading 20-14 and the clock showing less than one minute remaining in the game, Scott Lazo completed three clutch passes to Mike Aucoin which brought us to the Gardner ten yard line with 17 seconds showing on the clock. After a pass was almost intercepted in the end zone, Lazo, behind excellent pass protection, threw into the corner where marvelous Marv Carron hauled in the game-tying points with an outstanding diving catch. Jeff Earls then calmly split the uprights with no time showing on the clock to give the Pioneers a stunning 21-20 upset victory over Gardner. In the air, Scott Lazo I A , completed 12 of 17 :passes for 177 yards. A Seniors Bob Trahan and Marv Carron A were superb in their pass blocking. Great protection was also given Lazo by his front line featuring Brian Bobo Lee, Dana DiGregorio, Rich Hughes, Paul Bicki, and Dennis Culliton. Southbridge had little trouble in defeating their next three bpponents as they outplayed Auburn 18-12, walloped Bay Path 43-12, and trounced Athol 32-6. Doing the job defensively during this stretch were ends Iohn Gray and Iohn Ohop, Tackles Burzycki, Hughes and Dargie, as well as noseguard Gajewski. Leading the defensive backfield was outstanding middle linebacker Ken LeBlanc, followed by jeff Earls, john Ialbert, Mike Aucoin, Rich Learned and Marc Montigny. With a Class B and Division Il Championship in sight, the Pioneers looked forward to their upcoming game with Tantasqua. The Ted Farland Memorial Award winner, Scott Lazo, showed what the Pioneer offensive unit could do as we trounced the Warriors 38-6. Also outstanding in the game were receivers Marv Carron and Mike Aucoin. The defense was great as usual as the only Tantasqua score came late in the game against second 1 stringers. The defense allowed only one touchdown early in ' the game plus a field goal in the last quarter. Southbridge had its chances but just couldn't capitalize as the early St. John's scoring held up. A1-if Turkey Da y Entering the 56th Annual Turkey Day Classic, SHS, riding a 7-1-1 record, faced a weak but inspired Bartlett team. The Indians got first blood as they picked off a Scott Lazo pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. Before the Pioneers could recover, the Indians struck again as they hit on a 25 yard field goal. The Pioneers then scored as Marv Carron caught a long T.D. pass to bring the score at halftime to 8-9. The long walk to the locker room must have done something to the players, as they forced a fumble which Bob Trahan recovered on the second half opening kickoff. Coach Marino then inserted M.V.P. back Ken LeBlanc into the game. Ken's inspired play coupled with a good passing attack allowed SHS to develop a diversified attack which totally confused Bartlett. Pete Burzycki and LeBlanc returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Bob Trahan and Marv Carron added second half touchdowns. All of this plusia great defensive effort led to a 44-15 win. A The Pioneers finished second in both Class B and Division II ratings, and narrowly missed a bowl trip to Springfield. John Ohop made the Telegram and Gazette Super Team while Mike Aucoin and Ken LeBlanc the Class B All-Star Team. I I , 1 4 Pioneer Soccer it .gn-nv.. Of the 35- runners in the varsity competition, Southbridge's first 5 runners finished in the top thirteen places. The 1-2 punch of Sophomore Roberto Hernandez and Senior Jack Power accounted for 15 first place and 11 second place finishes. With only two of the top seven harriers being Seniors, the future holds great promise for SHS cross country. During the season Hernandez and Power finished 4th and 5th respectively in the Wachusetts Invitational meet. In the annual Knights of Columbus race, Roberto placed 5th out of a field of 650 runners. He also became the first SHS runner to ever qualify for state competition. Roberto and Jack were the two top vote getters in Border Conference All- Star.Team selection. ' The SHS girls' field hockey team made its debut this i year and achieved-an impressive showing for its first year in competition. Mastering the new sport often proved frustrating for the girls, most of whom had never handled a field hockey stick before this year. But hard work, determination, and plenty of encouragement from Coach Gately resulted in a respectable 5 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties record. The record might have been 6-5 -2, had at goal scored by Sherri Brousseau in the last game of the season not been ruled illegal by the referees. Playing against more experienced opponents, the Pioneerettes rallied behind Senior Co-Captains Lisa Corbitt and Joanne Gibeault to pull out some close victories. The team's first victory ever came in the third game of the season, as Southbridge beat Douglas 1-0. During the remainder of the year, the Pioneerettes also scored impressive wins over Bartlett Q8-Q1 and Q6- OD, Shephard Hill Q5-21, and Quaboag Q1-OJ, a team ' which formerly had an undefeated record. Led by Senior Co- Captains Mike Aucoin and Paul LaCoste, our hoop heroes hustled their way into both the Clark University and District III Tournaments. A streak of bad luck haunted the Pioneers early in the season as they lost five of their first eleven games by the unbelievable combined total of twelve points. 102 ,Y - V C . The Pioneerettes had their best season ever, compiling one impressive win after another on route to a 17-1 record. The only blemish on their otherwise perfect record was a 41-40 opening game loss to Quaboag, a game in which Southbridge was hampered by the sidelining of starters Sue Peters and Cheryl Caouette. The team recovered quickly, however, and spent the remainder of the season demonstrating just how outstanding they really were. The strength of the Pioneerettes offense is revealed in the fact that ' t they scored over fifty points in 14 of their 18 games, resulting in an average per game of 57, as compared to 33 for their opponents. It was hardly ever necessary for Coach Tremblay to leave her starters in for the duration of the games, as the Pioneerettes true ability was seldom ever tested. Their closest . scores resulted from games played against Gardner Q48-41, 56-531 and Douglas C56-501. 1 t , Wa' 'Sf Q.'u ,A ' Us , ...- 5. V et., gs, kt X I ln lst ROW: I. Others adding to the team's success included Senior Debbie Ouellette, Junior Cheryl Cesolini, and Sophomores Sue Grzembski and Chris Svedberg. Not only did the girls' terrific record give them the Border Conference Crown, it also qualified them for the Clark Tournament and allowed them to be the to p-seeded team in the District III Tournament. The highlight of the Girls 1974-75 Varsity Basketball season occured when junior Sue Peters reached the 1000 career point plateau, becoming the only female and the only junior in the school's history to do so. The day was February 12, the opponent was Bartlett, and the place was the Cole Avenue gym, crowded with patrons eagerly anticipating the memorable event. Sue didn't disappoint them. At 6:34 of the second period, she drove in for one of her patented lay ups. The ball bounced from one edge of the rim to the other then spun around once and dropped in just as Sue, positioning herself under the basket for a rebound, looked up. She might have reached the magic 1000 earlier, but in typically Sue Peters style, passed off to other teammates time and time again. With Sue Peters, the team comes first, and in the eyes of her teammates Sue is Number One. She finished the regular season with 1,041 total points! 108 X. As the yearbook staff prepared to meet its last deadline, the Senior Class Play The Diary of Anne Frank under the direction of Mr. Dennis McManis, was still in rehearsal. The pictures found on these two pages were taken during one of those rehearsals. The play is basically the dramatic story of Anne Prank, a mature young girl. She was to be played by Marina Billis. Anne was the child of Jewish parents who emigrated from Germany to Holland in the year 1933. During World War II, the Franks were forced into hiding in a small apartment in the rear of a warehouse. Four other companions also fled with the Franks to the warehouse. Protected by Christian friends, they remained there until the Nazis discovered them and trans ported them to concentration camps. Left behind in the apartment was a diary of the two years spent in hiding . . . 1 U I 4 ' 1.5. 4 u M P .. .J Winter Carnival 1975 The Greatest Show On Earth .QW The Greatest Show On Earth came to Southbridge High School during the week of February 10th through 15th and provided many exciting and amusing moments for both the students and faculty alike.
