Cards were at first ior benefits designed. Sent to amuse, not to enslave the mind. Not only meant lor amusement, a deck ol cards represents othor things. For the seniors ol 1950 each suit in the deck has a special meaning. The clubs remind us ol all the extra-curricular activities that we've participarted in. The hearts portray our love ior South Side with the thought that doep in our own hearts we will never lor-get the place where we've spent lour wonderful years. Tho s pad os stand for all the nights we've laboured over homework assignments, and all tho days we've spent in class working for that hard-to-qet A! I like the game and want to play; And through the long, long night will I. unruffled. Play what I get until break ol day. 1he 1950 eiaM i ol South Side ctlujh School P ieAeul 'fill ISDifiTOOIM 4 truss sasntfflsj @sm arar PteAentincj, MR MKglR ML From a high school student who always liked the atmosphere of a school, to a teacher who specialized in social studies—that's the background of our new principal. Michael Conovitz. Going back to the days before he attended Harvard University, from where he was graduated. Mr. Conovitz can recall the eventful trips to and from his high school. A native Brooklynite, he attended Eastern District High School which was three miles from his home. This meant traversing many city blocks, each of which was ruled by a gang of boys. It became the job of the students to get by each street as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Though he often arrived at school bedraggled, he was never late. Editor of his school newspaper, president of his school's student government. and president of his senior class, the will to teach seemed to be inborn in Mr. Conovitz. Even in his high school days he tutored non-students. Although a debater, he participated in such sports as basketball, tennis, rowing, and handball. He has always disliked quitters, whether on the athletic lield or in the classroom, but has admired students who could and would buckle-down to their studies, despite their opinions of teaching conditions or teachers. His graduate work, done at Columbia University, the University of Vermont, and New York University, was followed by numerous teaching appointments in Brookline, Massachusetts. Brooklyn, New York, and Manhattan, and in 1948 he was appointed to be principal at Central Evening High School. Then he came to South Side! The school was marked immediately by a growing feeling of school pride and spirit, all injected by Mr. Conovitz's efforts to make South Side a better school. After a few months here, he thinks that S. S. is on the way up in all ways . Confident that with our wonderful faculty” and our nice student body , we're sure to become an outstanding school, he takes pride in all our activities. We are sure that if there is anything that can be done for South Side by its principal. Mr. Conovitz is the man to do that job—and well! ©I? After a few seasons of warming up, the football team came up with a squad of great potentialities. The hard work of the coaches and the boys restored South Side's former fame on the gridiron. Playing a vital part on the field were 11 fellows, not only representing the school, but the Senior class as well. We are proud of these boys and their teammates. Coach Otto Stoll Swinwuncj, Records smashed, victories and other honors have been brought back to South Side by our swimming team. By winning a majority of their meets, the team has helped in establishing the prestige of our school. Hard work is required of the boys; they practice after school every day so that they are in tip-top shape. Outstanding in the natators was a group of seniors. The team, we are sure, will cut a worthy path of fame for themselves. Sandy Moore Teddy Karlin Herb Gries Harvey Bussell Arnie Stoin 35 fiaAJzeiLail Coach Delaney Coach Cary Yeah team, team, team . Success has been knocking on the door of all the South Side sports—but the leader in bringing this good fortune was our basketball squad. The Streak Cagers had one of its best seasons since the sport was revived at South Side. Contributing to the groups renown were five senior boys, who were very much at home on any court. We hope the Cagers continue to make every basket count, make the score high for the Siders. Jack Gollin Hugo Wahlstrom Arthur Love 36 Ed Scherlachor Joe Boland John Covington G uM, Go+uibuf, Leonard Neal Coach Anderson Bob Cuevas Crossing the tape in a season filled with many victories seems to have become a habit for the cross country team. These boys proved to be one of Essex County's strongest teams. A power house of strength and will power go hand in hand when a fellow runs Cross Country for South Side. The limitations put on a boy are many if he desires to become a good runner. Many of the Seniors proved that it is worth giving up a little to gain a lot. Isaac Evans Don Dewlow 37 Coach Gellor Coach Wallach En Garde, fence! Touch for South Side.” This may sound a little complicated for those who have never witnessed our fencing team in action. These expressions are all part of the language used in judging a match in which our Streaks are participating. Opportunity to bring back fame to the school has been knocking at the door of the fencers. These boys opened the door and made use of their opportunities. Represented on the team were three seniors, helping to bring home more glories to South Side. 38 lorry Avnct HaAeJicdl Lou Uttrcchi Strike three—you're out,” cries the umpire. South Side has won again,” echoes the crowd in the stands. There were times, however, that our baseball team did not emerge victorious, but they gained victory in other ways. Our players always managed to please the people in the stands. They always made an appearance comparable to that of professional clubs. Playing positions in the outfield, at the bases in the infield, were seven senior boys, always ready and waiting for the ball to come their way. Jo© Boland A1 Dzieminowski Saul Schnoider Eddie Palent Ed Scherlachei 39 The track team has well earned the title of the Streaks . Outstanding on their list of runners is the number of city champions which the team has. Pacing around the track, working to perfection in field events, and lots of excercises are what all the fellows must get into their practicing so that they are ready to take on their opponents. A great many senior boys have given up much of their time so that they could help the team run up a record number of victories. Walking again through South Side's halls as alumni would stir up a host of memories. Our many hours spent in class rooms brought us knowledge, well spiced with fun. Teachers who helped and encouraged us added to the amiable air about South Side. The memories would be incomplete without reminisces of the scores of friends with whom we shared the work and joy of our high school years. We were often kept after school—for clubs and activities, not for detention. Many sore throats resulted from cheering at games even though we were'nt always the victor. Since freshman days we have admired the murals on our stage. Writing, rehearsals, and rushing are outstanding memories of our Senior Show. Chewed-up pencils and midnight lamps were evidences of the work put into the yearbook. Walking down the aisle on senior day, in view of a full auditorium, was a thrill that can not be described .... and with tears and laughter at graduation night, we said goodbye. 93 THE HIGHLIGHTS OF A LIFETIME ARE FOREVER CHERISHED WHEN PHOTOGRAPHED BY Carlan Childhood Memories Graduation Memories Wedding Memories Carlan STUDIO OF GLAMOROUS PORTRAITS 574 CLINTON AVENUE NEWARK.
