Initiation On the days of October 2 and 3, l95l, South Shore High was a scene of merriment and confusion. For on those days seven liftle Green Hfreshiesn were initiated into 2 higher insitiutiin of learnfrg. Maurice Dahl, dressed as Q sophisticated your? lazy, wore hich-heeled shoes, nylons, a dress of the latest fashion, and a perky little hat perched on the top of his head. Reina a thourhtful lovin? mother, he broufht his baby dauvhter to school with him, and carried her around--by one arm. U Marcile Mills and Myrtle Selchert, two fine farmers, wore their hats pulled down over their touseled uncombes hair, while they happily swung their shining milk pails. Nathalie Schmelins, dressed as a bathinp beauty from Mars, hoped to berin a new fad. Her bathins suit looked verv becominp worn over lonr white underwear, which was worn inside out and backwards. Helen Waeve, Carolyn Bunde and Gretchen Wohlwend, were attired as nay farmers and were so absorbed in their farm work, that they wore their overalls and shirts inside out and backwards. They also neplected to put on their make-up and comb their curly locks. All the freshman wore beautiful, hand-tooled, necklaces of genuine onions, which gave them a certain air. They were so renerous that they carried the senior's books to and from classes for them. At the Initiation party on the evening of Oct. 3, the freshman entertained the upper classmen by playing leapfrog and walking barefooted throuph a mass of de- licious, gooey raw esvs. During the two days of Initiation, the freshman performed their given tasks, like good sports, and after petting through the toughest days of high school,be- came full-fledged freshman. Unfortunately, Helen Waege and Maurice Dahl dropped out, but later the class was joined by Orlen Borns. This class can now look forward to the day when it too, can have the great pleasure of initiating other incoming freshmen. Cheerleaders Early in the fall of 1951, Joyce Anderson, Carolyn Bunde, Phyllis Lindberg, and Jo Ann Archer were elected to lead the cheerinp section during the football and basketball seasons. Phyllis had had two previous years of cheerleading, during her freshman and sophomore years, and Joyce had been cheerleader durinv her sophomore year. New uniforms were completed by the cheerleaders' mothers for the Big Six Tour- nament. Their new outfits consisted of long-sleeved gold blouses and black jumpers and were worn with white tennis shoes. The girls attended all the football and basketball games to encourage and cheer their team on to victory. At the beginning of the school year, the lunchroom was moved from the North room to the South room. Approximately seventy students eat dinner at thelnnchroom daily.

ANNUAL STAFF Standing: Advisor Supt. Eirdsall, Myron Lind- ber?, Phyllis Lindberg, Sports editor, nallace Schmelingg Jo Ann Arch- er, and Art Meyer. Seated are: Assistant editor, Dick Meyer, Editor, Joyce Andersong and Business manarer, Kenneth Carlson. Early last winter, the Annual Staff was chosen, with Mr. Birdsall as super- visor. Solicting for ads was then begun in Watertown, South Shore and the surround- ing communities. The staff worked diligently, at finding information and trying to get the annunal out on time, but was hampered by the bad weather and road conditions ,A - tn STUDENT COUNCIL Standing: Student Voun- cil President, Wallace Schmelingg Duane Marten bee, sophomoreg Orlen Borns, freshmang Seated, Phyllis Lind- berg, junior, Joyce Anderson, secg and Supt Birdsall. Early in September, the student council members were elected. Each class elect- ing a president, to represent them in the council. Wallace Schmeling was elected president, of the council, by the student body. These students met regularly and discussed the buying of basketball uniforms, plans for initiation, and other school activities. These plans were frequently accepted by the student body.
